Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The portable part of an Iceberg agent integration is the tool contract. If an MCP server advertises four tools, namely list namespaces, list tables, describe a table, and run a query, LangChain, CrewAI and LlamaIndex can each load them through their own adapters. What does not port is everything beneath that contract: which catalog features the server actually offers, which engine version sits behind the query, how each framework wraps the tool, and who is allowed to do what with which credentials.
The four operations and three frameworks here are chosen to illustrate the problem. They are not an official Apache Iceberg bundle of agent tools, and they are not the only frameworks that can consume MCP. Where a claim depends on a specific framework release or a specific server implementation, the text says so.

Where the standards stop
Apache Iceberg’s REST Catalog documentation defines a common HTTP interface for catalog access. It states: “An Iceberg REST catalog is any catalog service that implements the Iceberg REST Catalog API specification.” That definition matters for porting. A client written against the specification can talk to any compliant catalog, but compliance is a property of the server. It does not guarantee that every server implements everything the specification describes.
Recommended Free Tools
MCP adds a second boundary. An MCP server can wrap selected catalog operations and present them to an agent as tools. The integration therefore has three layers: the Iceberg catalog API, the MCP server that exposes some of its operations, and the framework adapter that loads those tools into agent code. A gap at any one layer can look like a framework problem from the outside, which is why the sections below test each layer separately.

The four representative operations
These four operations are editorial picks for illustration. Iceberg does not define them as a standard agent toolset, and a real MCP server may use different tool names, arguments or groupings.
List namespaces
Catalog discovery is the simplest operation to expose. What it returns depends on the catalog behind the server and on the server itself. Check that the namespaces returned are the ones the calling identity is authorized to see, and that the output is in a form the agent can pass into the next call, such as the list-tables tool.
List tables
Table discovery works inside a namespace, so its usefulness depends on the namespace output being usable as its input. As with namespaces, availability and naming are set by the server, not by Iceberg.

Describe a table
This tool returns the schema and related metadata. Before relying on it, confirm which fields the chosen server and MCP implementation actually return. An agent that plans queries from column types needs the schema fields. A tool that returns only a table name gives the agent nothing to plan with.
Run a query
This is the operation most often misunderstood. The Iceberg table format describes how table data and metadata are laid out; it does not execute SQL. Running a query requires a query engine or service behind the tool. A third-party community overview of Iceberg MCP servers describes query execution as a possible capability of such servers, not as a guarantee of the protocol. That overview describes an example design and is not an Apache standard.
How the three frameworks load MCP tools
All three frameworks consume MCP tools, but each does so through its own adapter. The table reflects what each framework’s documentation described as of early October 2026.

Each framework’s wrapper sits between the server and the agent. A tool’s name, input schema, result shape and side effects therefore depend on both the server and the wrapper, and the same operation can arrive in two frameworks looking different.
What does not port automatically
Catalog features are negotiated, not assumed
The REST client discovers which endpoints a server advertises and uses only the features it supports. If a server offers no view endpoints or scan-planning endpoints, the functions that depend on them are unavailable. Multi-table commits are optional in the REST protocol. Apache’s documentation says engines commit tables individually today, and describes multi-table commits as primarily a Java API capability. An MCP tool that wraps a catalog operation inherits what the server offers and nothing more.
Engine versions decide what “supports Iceberg” means
Apache Iceberg’s multi-engine documentation states: “Apache Iceberg is an open standard for huge analytic tables that can be used by any processing engine.” Breadth of engine support is not the same as uniform feature support. Engine integrations are versioned, and incompatible engine versions can have separate integration codebases and artifacts. Two systems that both “support Iceberg” can therefore expose different features. Any compatibility record for a tool stack should pair the engine name with its version.

Framework behavior differs even when transport is shared
A shared transport does not erase framework differences. Verify these behaviors for each framework and each package version you use:
- tool discovery and loading, including whether every server tool is loaded or only a selected subset
- tool naming and filtering
- structured outputs and how results reach the model
- error reporting when a catalog call fails
- elicitation or approval requests, and how the framework pauses for them
- async behavior
LangChain’s beta namespace requires langchain[mcp]>=1.4.0. CrewAI needs the mcp library for its integration, and LlamaIndex’s MCP tools come from a separate package. Beta status and package requirements change quickly, so check each framework’s current release notes before pinning a version.
Authentication and secrets stay with your deployment
The REST Catalog documentation lists five authentication types: none, basic, oauth2, sigv4 and google. The same documentation warns that credential and token settings are secrets and can appear in engine UIs or event logs unless redaction covers them. Every layer that stores the configuration, including the MCP server and the framework’s logs, is another place where a secret can leak. Use placeholder values in examples and never paste live credentials into configuration samples or tickets.

Being MCP-compatible is not a security guarantee. Confirm server-side authorization, the scope of each exposed operation, how secrets are handled, which endpoints the server supports, and how the framework handles errors and approval requests.
Server scope and permissions
A separate Iceberg MCP server implementation can impose its own permissions and limits. One Iceberg MCP server implementation in a Cloudera repository describes read-only access to Iceberg tables through Impala. That is a property of that implementation, not of Iceberg or MCP. If the tool you need writes or maintains tables, confirm that the specific server implements those operations rather than assuming the protocol supplies them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A test sequence before you port a tool
- Record the catalog type and the engine name and version that sit behind the server.
- Call each of the four operations directly against the MCP server, and note the fields each one returns.
- Confirm the server advertises every endpoint the tools depend on.
- Load the tools into one framework at a time, and compare the names, schemas and result shapes with the direct calls.
- Trigger a failing call, such as an unknown namespace or a revoked credential, and check what the agent receives.
- Review the framework and server logs for leaked credentials, and confirm that redaction covers them.
The Bottom Line
The four operations port as a shared tool contract, not as a guarantee. Iceberg’s common REST interface and MCP’s tool boundary remove a good deal of adapter work, but the catalog’s advertised features, the engine version, each framework’s wrapper, and the security configuration all have to be verified separately in every stack.
