Recommended Free Tools
A disk cleaner can free storage on a Windows 10 PC, but it will not reliably make the machine faster, and it cannot restore the free security updates Microsoft ended in October 2025. Windows already includes two cleanup tools, Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup, that cover the core job most cleaners advertise. Start with those, review what will be deleted, and look at other causes of slowness only if the PC still feels sluggish after the space is recovered.
Windows 10 support ended, and cleanup won’t change that
Microsoft Support states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” (Microsoft Support, “Tips to improve PC performance in Windows”). Any article about Windows 10 maintenance published now should state that date plainly. Freeing disk space addresses storage and nothing else. A cleaner does not put security fixes back on a machine that no longer receives them.

Why freeing space does not guarantee a faster PC
Microsoft’s performance guidance names several separate causes of a slow PC: limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, malware, and hardware limitations. Storage is only one of them, and the same guidance warns that older PCs may not see significant improvement from its recommended steps (Microsoft Support, “Tips to improve PC performance in Windows”).
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe practical consequence is simple. If the drive is nearly full, clearing space can help, because Windows needs room for temporary files and updates. If the PC is slow while the drive has plenty of room, a cleaner is unlikely to be the fix, and the problem is more likely to be startup load, a heavy background process, or the hardware itself.

Start with the built-in tools
Both tools below are part of Windows 10 and need no download. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space covers both (Microsoft Support, “Free up drive space in Windows”).
Storage Sense
Storage Sense automates cleanup. It can remove selected temporary files and manage what sits in the Recycle Bin. To use it:
Rank #2
- 15.6" diagonal, HD (1366 x 768), micro-edge, BrightView, 220 nits, 45% NTSC.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn Storage Sense on, or choose the option to run it now.
- Review the cleanup recommendations Windows lists, and confirm only the ones you are comfortable removing.
Storage Sense is not a blanket deletion tool. Microsoft’s Spanish-language Storage Sense page says Downloads folder files and files held by cloud providers are not removed by default and must be configured before they are touched (Microsoft Support, “Manage drive space with Storage Sense”). Check those settings if you expect them to be cleaned.
Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup gives you category-level control, which makes it the better choice for a one-time, deliberate cleanup.
Rank #3
- 10th Generation Intel Core i5-1035G1 processor
- 12GB system memory for full-power multitasking
- 256GB Solid State Drive
- 15.6" Micro-edge touchscreen display
- Click the search box on the taskbar, type Disk Cleanup, and open the app.
- Choose the drive to clean, usually C:, and wait for Windows to calculate the sizes.
- Review each file category before ticking it. Read the description Windows shows for any category you do not recognise.
- Select Clean up system files only if you have checked the categories and understand what they contain, then confirm the deletion.
What to check before you delete anything
- Windows.old and rollback. Microsoft warns that deleting the previous Windows installation removes the Windows.old folder and the ability to return to the prior version (Microsoft Support, “Free up drive space in Windows”). Do this only after you are sure you do not need to roll back.
- Recycle Bin contents. Items there are not yet gone. Open the Recycle Bin and check it before you empty it.
- Downloads and cloud files. Storage Sense does not clear them by default, and Disk Cleanup will not remove your personal files. Review them yourself if you need the space.
How the options compare
| Option | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Storage Sense | Automates removal of selected temporary files and manages Recycle Bin items. | Downloads and cloud-provider files are not removed by default; review the settings (Microsoft Support, Storage Sense page). |
| Disk Cleanup | Lets you choose file categories and optionally clean system files. | Review each category. Deleting the previous Windows installation removes rollback capability. |
| Third-party cleaner | Markets automatic scanning and cleanup of junk files and registry entries. | This article does not rank or recommend a specific product. The Microsoft guidance it relies on does not evaluate third-party cleaners, and no independent comparison of their speed effects was located. |
| Drive optimization | Defragments hard disk drives and trims solid-state drives. | A different operation from deleting temporary files. See the section below. |
Drive optimization: defragmentation for HDDs, trimming for SSDs
Windows treats the two drive types differently. Microsoft’s guidance on optimizing data drives describes defragmentation for hard disk drives and trimming for solid-state drives (Microsoft Support, “Defragment / optimize your data drives in Windows”). Neither operation deletes files. If a cleaner advertises “defragmenting” as part of a cleanup, check whether it applies to your drive type before relying on it.
When the problem is an update prompt
Windows updates need free space to download and install. If an update fails for lack of room, Microsoft’s guidance says an external storage device can temporarily extend the space available, and that at least 10 GB free is needed on that device (Microsoft Support, “Free up space for Windows updates”). The amount an update needs varies with the update path and any optional content installed, so follow the figure shown in the actual prompt. This is a narrow fit for an update that requires the space. It is not a way to speed up the PC.

If space keeps disappearing after cleanup
- Check whether the drive refills within days. Microsoft’s guidance on freeing drive space describes a possible Microsoft Store temporary-folder problem and gives Store reset and cache steps, along with Windows Update troubleshooting (Microsoft Support, “Free up drive space in Windows”).
- If the drive is full but the PC is not slow, the cleanup worked and the performance problem lies elsewhere.
- If the PC is slow with ample free space, review startup apps and check hardware limits, following Microsoft’s performance steps (Microsoft Support, “Tips to improve PC performance in Windows”).
A decision checklist
- Is the real need free space, startup load, or hardware? Match the tool to the cause.
- Do you want automation or manual review? Storage Sense automates. Disk Cleanup lets you decide category by category.
- What will the tool delete? Confirm the file types and whether rollback files are included.
- What is the drive type? Optimization differs for HDDs and SSDs.
- Does an update prompt specifically require extra storage? Only then does an external drive matter.
Microsoft’s support pages identify multiple causes of sluggishness, so a cleaner-only comparison cannot answer every performance problem.
