Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsToolJet MCP lets an MCP-compatible coding agent generate a ToolJet app and, where you ask for it, a ToolJet Database table inside a workspace you choose. That is enough to scaffold a working device register quickly. It does not decide what a device record should contain, who may change it, or whether a scan or label step belongs in the process. Those choices remain yours, and they should be made before you write the prompt.
What ToolJet MCP does and what you still decide
ToolJet describes its MCP server as a connection between an AI coding agent and the ToolJet instance where apps are created and changed. According to ToolJet’s official MCP overview, the connection can build apps from prompts, inspect connected datasources, create ToolJet DB tables, seed rows, write queries, and manage permissions. The agent works with the access rights of the personal access token (PAT) owner, and ToolJet audit logs record platform activity, including the acting user and the action.

The official documentation demonstrates three things: general app generation, ToolJet DB operations, and validation. It does not provide a device-register template, a canonical device schema, or a prescribed field list. Everything specific to your fleet is a design decision:

- the device fields and which ones are required
- how an asset identifier is made unique
- the status vocabulary and the lifecycle a device moves through
- who can read, create, edit and delete records
- whether devices relate to people, sites, or maintenance events in other tables
- whether a barcode, QR code or label workflow is needed at all
Before you connect: workspace, datasource and access
Decide where the register will live before anything is generated. ToolJet DB is available on both ToolJet Cloud and self-hosted deployments, and it offers a spreadsheet-style interface and an SQL editor. Alternatively, you can point the app at a datasource your workspace already connects to. The choice affects who owns the source of truth, so settle it first.

Three access facts shape the setup:
- The token defines the boundary. The PAT is tied to one workspace, and the agent can do whatever its owner can do there. Create the token from an account whose role matches the task, not from an administrator account by default.
- Data may be read. ToolJet warns that agent exploration is nondeterministic and that any data reachable in the workspace may be read. Its guidance is to connect MCP to an instance whose development environment points at development data, not production records.
- Keep the token out of files. Client setup guidance for MCP says to keep a PAT secret, use HTTPS for the instance URL, and avoid committing a plain-text token in client configuration.
Connect the MCP client
Connection details differ by client, and ToolJet’s setup guide covers both ToolJet Cloud and self-hosted instances. The general sequence is the same:
- Confirm the machine has Node.js 20 or newer, which ToolJet specifies for the relevant MCP client setups.
- In the target workspace, create a personal access token for the account that will own the agent’s actions.
- Enter the instance URL, which should use HTTPS, and the token in your client’s MCP configuration, following the client-specific steps in ToolJet’s setup guide.
- Store the token in your client’s secret mechanism or environment variable, not in a file you commit to version control.
- Start a new session in the client and confirm that it can see your workspace datasources before asking it to create anything.
The final step matters. If the agent cannot list the datasource you intended, stop there. Do not proceed on the assumption that it is connected to the right workspace.
Ask for a bounded first version
ToolJet’s own example prompt for app generation is “Build me a tickets dashboard on my ToolJet DB.” It shows that you can describe an outcome in plain language. The same pattern can be adapted to a device register. The example below is an illustrative prompt written for this article, not a tested recipe, and the field list is a suggestion you should replace with your own:

Build me a device register on my ToolJet DB. Use the datasource named
"ToolJet DB" and create a table called devices. Include a list view with
search and filters on status and location, and a create/edit form.
Fields: asset_id (unique), device_type, assigned_to, location, status,
purchase_date, warranty_end. Do not add delete actions yet.
Keep the first version small. Naming the datasource and entities makes the first result more predictable, and a narrow request is easier to review. Leave permissions, relationships and label printing for a second pass once the basic structure is correct.
Decide the data model before you review it
Review the generated table against a model you wrote down beforehand. The following decisions are usually the ones that go wrong when they are left to the generated default:
- Identifier. ToolJet DB supports primary keys for uniquely identifying records. Decide whether the primary key is an internal ID and the asset tag is a separate unique column, or whether the asset tag itself is the key. Reusing a retired tag can break history if the tag is the key.
- Status vocabulary. Write the allowed statuses, such as in stock, deployed, in repair, and retired, and decide who may move a device between them.
- Assignment. A single
assigned_totext field is quick but loses history. A separate assignments table with a foreign key to devices preserves it, and ToolJet DB supports foreign keys for that relationship. - Dates. Confirm which dates are required, such as purchase or warranty end, and whether they are stored as dates rather than free text.
Check the generated structure and bindings
ToolJet’s app-generation flow inspects datasources, creates the app, adds queries, binds components to those queries, and returns links for editing and testing. Once it finishes, open the generated app and check the following:

- every table column matches the model you decided on, with the right type and required flags
- the unique identifier is actually enforced, not only labelled as unique in a form
- each table, form and filter component is bound to the intended query, not to a placeholder
- write queries exist only for the actions you asked for
- the app contains no delete action unless you requested one
Test each form with one valid record and one duplicate identifier. The duplicate test is the fastest way to find a missing constraint.
Validate before handing the app over
The official MCP reference lists tools for creating apps, creating ToolJet DB tables, inserting rows, adding and running queries, linting planned changes, applying validated changes, and validating an app. Use the lint and validation path before you accept changes, then inspect the saved app and query configuration in the development environment.
ToolJet also says that agents with browser access may open a built app to check it. Treat that as a convenience. Your own check of the forms, filters and data behavior is still required.

Two safety features matter when you revise the app. The reference describes five destructive tools that require explicit confirmation, covering deletion of pages, queries, components, tables or columns. Read each confirmation before approving it, because removing a column deletes the data in it. Your audit log will show which user and which action made each change, so use it when a field disappears unexpectedly.
Decide whether scanning or labels belong in the workflow
A device register does not need a scanner to work. The official build workflow neither requires nor recommends barcode or QR scanners, label printers, or asset labels. Some organizations want a scan step to find a record quickly, and the decision depends on your existing asset process and hardware. If you add it, plan it as a separate phase: choose the identifier format first, then build the lookup, then connect the hardware. The identifier decision in the data model is what makes the scan step reliable later.

| Data store | ToolJet DB (new table in the workspace) | Existing connected database or API | ToolJet DB supports primary and foreign keys and a spreadsheet interface with an SQL editor. Which store is preferable is not stated by the sources; it depends on where your source of truth already lives. |
| Table structure | One devices table | Devices plus related tables for assignments or maintenance | Relationships are supported through foreign keys. The right number of tables depends on how much history you need to keep. |
| Deployment | ToolJet Cloud | Self-hosted ToolJet | MCP setup is documented for both. Data controls and existing infrastructure decide between them; the sources do not rank them. |

What the official documentation does not establish
- It does not provide a device-register sample, schema, or step-by-step build prompt. The example prompt above is illustrative only.
- It does not establish the right fields, roles, audit requirements or lifecycle for any particular organization.
- The tool count is a product inventory figure. ToolJet’s supported tools page lists 50 MCP tools as of the 2026 access date, and that number may change between releases.
As ToolJet’s official MCP overview puts it: “ToolJet MCP is a server that exposes your ToolJet instance to an AI coding agent, so the agent can build and modify apps in the workspace you already work in, without you leaving your editor.”
The result is a draft that gets you to a working structure faster. Whether that structure is correct for your devices is a decision you still have to verify against your own requirements.
