Fortnite’s return to iPhone was not a formal sanction imposed on Apple by Epic Games. Apple reinstated Epic Games Sweden’s developer account in March 2024 after pressure over the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), and Fortnite launched on iPhones in the EU that August through alternative app stores—not as a worldwide listing in Apple’s App Store. Reuters later reported a new availability dispute in May 2025. The available reports do not establish where Fortnite can be downloaded on iPhone today.
What happened—and what “sanctioned” gets wrong
The headline phrase “sanctioned by Epic Games” blurs several different events. The European Commission’s DMA requirements and scrutiny concerned Apple’s iOS distribution rules; Apple terminated and then agreed to reinstate Epic Games Sweden AB’s developer account; Epic brought Fortnite back to iPhones in the EU through alternative distribution; and the companies later clashed again over availability. The sources do not establish that Epic formally sanctioned Apple.

Nor did the 2024 launch put Fortnite back in Apple’s App Store everywhere. It was a regional return through the Epic Games Store and other independent stores. The account reinstatement enabled Epic’s plans, but it was a distinct event from the game’s launch.

These are dated snapshots, not a reliable answer to whether Fortnite is downloadable on a particular iPhone today. The reviewed sources do not establish live October 2026 availability. Check the Epic Games Store and the current rules for your country before relying on an older launch report.

Why the EU changed the iPhone distribution picture
The EU Digital Markets Act is the regulatory backdrop. Apple says the European Commission designated it a gatekeeper for iOS, the App Store and Safari on September 5, 2023, and for iPadOS on April 29, 2024. Apple’s DMA information page explains its compliance position and links to related material.
The DMA’s third-party distribution requirement made alternative app stores on iOS a live issue. In its March 2024 statement, Epic reproduced Article 6(4) as requiring gatekeepers to allow and technically enable third-party apps or app stores using or interoperating with their operating system, including access by means other than the gatekeeper’s core platform services. Apple’s account decision, Epic’s store plans and the Commission’s regulatory process should not be treated as the same action. Apple reinstating an account did not itself guarantee a permanent Fortnite listing, while the Commission’s 2026 document records both alternative stores operating and an investigation into Apple’s implementation and terms still underway.

Epic framed Apple’s account termination and store rules as obstruction. In March 2024, Epic said Apple had told it and committed to the European Commission to reinstate the developer account. These are Epic’s attributed statements, not a neutral finding that Apple broke the law.

In May 2025, Apple said it had asked Epic Sweden to resubmit the update without its US storefront and said it had not removed Fortnite from alternative distribution marketplaces. Epic alleged retaliation in a court filing, but the cited report does not establish that a court accepted that allegation. The Commission’s 2026 staff document provides a separate regulator account: it records third-party-store distribution while describing its investigation into Apple’s compliance solution, fees, installation journey and eligibility rules as ongoing.
What Epic’s 2024 store plans meant
When Epic announced its mobile-store plans on July 25, 2024, it described a 12% fee for payments processed by its store and 0% for third-party payments. Those were Epic’s announced terms at that date, not independently verified current terms. Epic’s July 2024 announcement is the source for the proposal.

At the August 2024 launch, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney described iOS installation as a 15-step process. That was his characterization of the installation journey then, not a current step count. Reuters also quoted Sweeney estimating that Epic “probably lost over a billion dollars of revenue” by losing access to Apple’s iOS customer base for four years; this was his estimate and rhetorical framing, not an audited financial result.
How to interpret “Fortnite is back on iPhone”
For any availability claim, check three things together:

- Country: the 2024 iPhone return cited here was in the EU, not a worldwide App Store relisting.
- Distribution route: the EU launch used the Epic Games Store and other independent stores, rather than Apple’s App Store.
- Date: Reuters reported another iPhone availability clash in May 2025, and the Commission’s 2026 document discusses store activity and ongoing proceedings rather than confirming Fortnite’s current listing.
That distinction also answers whether the story was simply “Fortnite coming to the iOS Store”: the EU launch was a return to iOS through alternative stores, not evidence that the game returned to Apple’s App Store worldwide.
