What is Google Flow?
Google describes Flow as an AI filmmaking tool for creating clips, scenes, and stories. Its workspace is organized around planning, creation, and refinement, with natural-language tools for developing ideas and working on projects. Google presents it as a way to explore visual concepts such as films, music videos, and art—not as a demonstrated replacement for a conventional editing or production pipeline.

Flow brings together several Google models. The current product page lists Gemini Omni for creating and editing video from reference inputs, Nano Banana for generating and editing images, and Veo 3.1 for video generation. Google markets Veo 3.1 as supporting native audio and creative controls; those are product claims, not independent comparative test results. See Google Flow’s product page.

A typical desktop workflow is to open or create a project, describe a scene, select a video mode and model, choose the available framing and output options, and generate. The exact controls vary by model and may change as Flow is updated. Google recommends describing the subject, action, environment, lighting, and visual style rather than relying on a short, underspecified prompt.

- Open or create a project. Start in Flow and choose an existing project or create one.
- Write the scene prompt. Include who or what appears, what happens, where it happens, the lighting, and the intended style.
- Choose a model and mode. The available choices determine which inputs and controls you can use.
- Add references if useful. Where supported, attach ingredient images to guide recurring characters or objects, or provide a first frame and, in some modes, a last frame to anchor a clip or transition.
- Set the available output options. Choose orientation or aspect ratio, duration, and number of outputs when those controls are offered.
- Generate and refine. Review the result, then adjust the prompt or use available editing and extension features. Google’s video-creation help explains its current workflow.
Use references to guide continuity
Ingredients can provide visual references for elements such as a character or key object across clips. Frames serve a different purpose: a first frame can establish how a clip begins, while first-and-last-frame modes can define its opening and ending image. These inputs can guide consistency, but the documented features do not establish that Flow will preserve every detail perfectly from shot to shot.
Use the Agent for planning and prompts
Flow’s Agent can brainstorm, refine prompts, suggest creative directions, and guide generation in natural language. Google says Agent queries do not use Flow credits, though they are subject to a daily quota. Generating media does use credits. Google’s model and feature guide describes model-dependent tools, including video extension and video-to-video editing.
Is Google Flow free?
As of October 4, 2026, Google’s live documentation is inconsistent. The product page advertises Flow as free without a Google AI subscription and lists 50 daily Flow credits. Google’s Help Center access page, meanwhile, says users need Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra; it also identifies certain qualifying Workspace plans that receive Flow with 50 daily credits. Eligibility may depend on supported region and account. Check the current signup or account screen rather than assuming either page applies to your situation. Google says Flow is for users who are at least 18 and located in a supported region. Availability is not guaranteed everywhere Google AI Pro is offered. Google recommends a desktop computer with a Chromium-based browser for the fullest editing experience; mobile and app access are available, but some advanced functions are desktop-only and support can vary. Check Google’s current access and platform guidance for your account and location.
How many credits does Google Flow use?
Google’s product page currently lists these U.S.-displayed monthly plan prices and Flow credit allowances. Prices may vary by market. The listed monthly credits are in addition to the daily 50-credit allocation shown on that page; Google says unused daily and monthly credits do not roll over.

Credits are charged per generation, not simply per request. A request that produces multiple generations can therefore use credits for each one. Google’s Help Center currently lists these examples:

Model costs can change, and features or credit rates may depend on your plan. Check the current costs in Flow settings before generating. Google’s feature guide covers model capabilities; its credit guide lists current charges.

There is no single best model for every task. Compare the mode you need, available inputs, clip length, resolution, editing or extension options, credit cost, and access on your plan and in your region. The controls and supported features differ by model, so confirm them in Flow before building a workflow around a particular capability.
- For a quick draft: compare the available lower-cost or faster options with your desired resolution and input mode.
- For a specific opening or transition: check whether the selected mode accepts a first frame or both first and last frames.
- For continuity across clips: look for ingredient support and use reference images to guide recurring visual elements.
- For revising existing footage: check for video editing or extension support, which is model-dependent.
- Before committing credits: inspect the current model cost and output settings in Flow; rates and supported features can evolve.
Watermarks, safety, and use of generated media
Google says Flow outputs generated with Veo, Omni, or Nano Banana include an invisible SynthID watermark. A visible watermark can be enabled in settings and is applied automatically for users in India, South Korea, and Vietnam. Google also says Flow prohibits knowingly generating harmful, illegal, or inappropriate content. Do not assume Flow output is watermark-free. Google’s Flow access and usage help provides its current guidance.
