They are separate cosmetic types, not two names for the same item. Epic says Sidekicks provide no gameplay advantage and take no damage.

What a Sidekick does—and does not do
Epic Games Player Support describes Sidekicks as companions that react to the world. You can interact with them through Sidekick Emotes, but they are not combat helpers: Epic says they “do not provide any gameplay advantage and don’t take damage.” See Epic’s Sidekick support article.

Where Sidekicks can appear
Epic’s support guidance says Sidekicks can accompany players in Battle Royale, Save the World, Fortnite Festival, LEGO Fortnite, and developer-made experiences. In Festival, they stay backstage rather than appearing as an on-stage companion. On developer-made islands, the creator must enable Sidekicks.
The compatibility chart specifies LEGO Fortnite Odyssey and shows that Sidekicks are not supported in Rocket Racing. It lists Back Bling as unsupported in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey as well as Rocket Racing. Check the experience’s compatibility rather than assuming a cosmetic works everywhere.

For island creators
In a June 5, 2026 announcement, Epic said Sidekicks became available as scriptable NPCs in Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Creators can add them through the NPC Spawner, adjust Sidekick-specific behavior and appearance, and use Cosmetic Sync to have an NPC take the form of a player’s owned Sidekick. Epic said these islands could be published starting July 23, 2026. This creator feature is separate from the player-facing difference between a Sidekick and Back Bling. Details are in Epic’s UEFN announcement.
How Sidekick appearance customization works
For a customizable Sidekick, Epic says appearance setup is available once after you obtain it. Find the Sidekick in the Locker, choose its appearance, review the selection, and lock it in. The appearance choices are permanent, and some Sidekicks cannot be customized. Epic also says you can purchase a Sidekick more than once and choose different appearances, but each owned customization must be unique. Names and accessories can be changed, according to Epic’s October 30, 2025 launch announcement.

Does owning Back Bling give you a Sidekick?
Not as a general rule. Epic announced one specific launch-era entitlement: players who owned the Bonesy Back Bling would be granted the Bonesy Sidekick on November 7, 2025. That announcement does not establish that other Back Bling grants a Sidekick.
The same October 2025 announcement described Peels as an unlock in the Battle Pass arriving November 1, and said Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor would arrive in the Shop on November 7. These are historical launch details, not confirmation of current Shop stock or prices.
