What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Epic’s live status page first. If it shows an incident affecting Fortnite or a related service, wait for Epic to resolve it before changing your home network. If there is no matching incident, use Fortnite’s network stats and compare the same device under different connection conditions. An operational status page is a useful signal, not proof that every regional, platform-specific, or unreported issue has been ruled out.
1. Check whether Epic reports an outage
Open the Epic Games Public Status page and inspect Fortnite and related game services. If a listed incident matches your problem, wait for an update or resolution and then try again. Repeatedly changing router settings is unlikely to help while the service is affected.

Status is a live snapshot: it can change, and an operational indicator cannot rule out every localized, platform-specific, or unreported problem. Check the page when the error occurs rather than relying on an earlier status report. Epic advises players to check service status when connection or matchmaking problems arise; when a relevant service is down, players cannot connect until it is resolved. Epic’s server-status guidance explains where to check.
2. Read Fortnite’s network stats when no incident is shown
Turn on Net Debug Stats
- From the Fortnite lobby, open Settings → Game UI.
- Enable Net Debug Stats and apply the setting.
- In a match, watch the network display while the problem is happening. Note packet loss and whether latency looks high or unstable.
Epic says red bars under the network stats indicate packet loss; a solid white line indicates no packet loss. Packet loss means data is being lost between your connection and the server. It points to a problem somewhere along the network path, but does not identify whether the cause is Wi-Fi, a router, your ISP, or another segment. Epic advises contacting your ISP for help troubleshooting a connection when packet loss appears. See Epic’s instructions for viewing Fortnite network performance details.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Do not judge by average ping alone
Latency is only one part of the picture. Epic recommends considering average latency, packet loss, and jitter. Its troubleshooting guidance says packet loss consistently above about 1% can cause in-game problems even when average ping is low; treat that as Epic’s practical guidance, not a universal threshold for every game or connection. Compare minimum and maximum latency as a rough indication of variation, and note whether stats change when the error occurs. Epic’s latency and ping troubleshooting page includes platform-specific ping-test examples.
3. Compare the same device under similar conditions
A connection test while nobody is using the network may look fine even if Fortnite struggles during the usual play time. Repeat the comparison when the problem normally happens and note whether latency or packet loss worsens under household load. Epic specifically cautions that an idle test may not reveal problems that occur when a connection is loaded.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams while comparing. Upload activity can be especially disruptive because home connections often have less upload capacity.
- If the device and router have Ethernet ports, try a wired Ethernet connection and compare it with Wi-Fi. Use a cable long enough to reach safely; this test cannot fix an Epic service outage.
- If practical, test the same device on another connection, such as a mobile hotspot. If the error stops there, Epic’s guidance treats that as evidence pointing to the player’s network, not proof that the router must be replaced.
These comparisons help narrow the fault, but no single test conclusively identifies the responsible device or network operator. Epic’s general connection troubleshooting guidance also includes restarting the modem or router. If you try that, allow the equipment to reconnect before testing again.
4. Use the pattern of evidence, not the error text alone
| What you observe | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Epic lists an incident affecting Fortnite or a related service | A service-side issue is a plausible cause; home changes may not help. | Wait for Epic’s update or resolution, then retry. |
| No matching incident, with packet-loss bars or degraded or unstable latency during play | There is evidence of a network-path problem, but the stats do not locate it. | Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available, reduce competing traffic, and contact your ISP if packet loss persists. |
| The same device works on another connection but not on home internet | The home network path or ISP connection is implicated. | Continue isolating the home connection; do not assume a particular router component is at fault. |
| The problem continues across connections, or stats look normal while the error recurs | The available checks have not isolated the cause. A clear status page and normal-looking stats do not rule out every platform-specific or intermittent problem. | Contact Epic Support with the platform, region, error text, time of occurrence, and observed network stats. |
Fortnite error wording is a clue for choosing a help page, not reliable proof of where the fault lies. Epic’s matchmaking guidance says errors #1, #2, and #3 can be caused by either maintenance or a network connection issue; the message alone does not distinguish them. See Epic’s guidance for matchmaking errors #1, #2, and #3.

5. Contact the support team that can investigate the evidence
For persistent packet loss or a connection problem that appears limited to your home internet, contact your ISP and share when it happens and what your Fortnite network stats show. If the issue is not isolated by the status check or connection comparisons, contact Epic Support with the platform, region, exact error text, time of occurrence, and network observations. Epic’s general troubleshooting page covers other topics, including device, proxy, DNS, and firewall checks; advanced changes such as port forwarding are not a sensible first step without a platform-specific reason.
