Choose cloud storage by matching four things to your needs: the amount of space and plan you will pay for, fit with your devices and services, how the provider encrypts and handles your files, and what you can recover after deletion or unwanted changes. No single service is the right choice for everyone. For irreplaceable files, keep another copy outside the synced account.
Start with the files and devices you need to protect
Estimate what you will store—documents, photos, videos, or a mix—and whether the library is likely to grow. Then check how the service works on the devices you actually use, whether you need offline access or easy sharing, and whether it fits your existing accounts and collaboration habits. Storage allowances, features, and renewal terms vary by plan and can change, so confirm the current offer for your region and account before committing.

Capacity alone is not enough to compare services. For example, Proton’s plan page accessed October 3, 2026 lists 5 GB for its free Drive tier and 200 GB for Drive Plus. It also describes up to 10 years of previous-version recovery for Drive Plus; that is a provider-stated benefit, not an independent comparison, and should be checked against the current plan terms. Compare privacy claims by asking what is encrypted
The word “encrypted” does not by itself mean that a provider is unable to read your files. Look for an explicit explanation of whether files are end-to-end encrypted, whether that protection is on by default, what information remains visible to the service, how shared links work, and what account recovery requires. Encryption at rest or in transit is not equivalent to end-to-end encryption.
What end-to-end encryption changes
Proton’s privacy policy says file contents, names, folders, and thumbnails are end-to-end encrypted. It also identifies operational metadata the service can access, including creation and modification times and permissions. This is a specific description of Proton Drive’s stated model, not proof that every aspect of a file or account is hidden from the provider. Review the Proton Drive privacy policy, last modified August 19, 2026, for its current details.

Provider-blind encryption can complicate recovery. Proton Support says that after a password reset, encrypted Drive data may remain inaccessible until you restore the prior encryption key using a previous password, recovery phrase, or recovery file. Consider whether you can safely keep that recovery material before relying on this model. Proton’s password-reset and Drive recovery guidance

Google states that it does not use information in apps primarily used to store personal content, including Drive, for advertising purposes. That is a statement about advertising use; it is not a claim that no processing or disclosure can ever occur. Read the provider’s full explanation of how Drive protects privacy and gives users control rather than treating one policy sentence as a complete privacy comparison.

For any provider, check the current privacy policy and settings for what is encrypted, which metadata is processed, what happens when you share a file, and how account or legal processes may affect access. The available provider pages do not establish a complete legal or jurisdictional comparison across all services.
Know which kind of recovery you need
“Recovery” can mean several different things: restoring a deleted item from Trash, reverting one file to an earlier version, rolling back broader account changes, or retrieving a separate copy stored outside the sync service. These protections address different mistakes. Confirm the feature and its eligibility for the account type and plan you will use.

Keep a separate copy of files you cannot replace
Sync makes files available across devices, but a synced copy is not necessarily an independent backup: deletion or unwanted changes may propagate. If losing access to a file would be costly, keep another copy that does not depend on the same synced account—for example, download personal files to a separate device or external drive. Google itself suggests downloading files to a personal device before deleting them when freeing storage space, but that advice does not establish that every local copy is a full backup. Google’s guidance on storage and downloading files
Make the second copy useful by keeping it separate from the everyday sync workflow and checking that important files are actually present and open. A local copy on the same device can still be lost if that device fails; an external drive is one possible additional location, not a guarantee by itself.

Use a practical shortlist before you sign up
- Check plan fit: Compare current storage allowance, family sharing if relevant, over-quota behavior, renewal cost, and whether recovery features require a higher tier.
- Check your ecosystem: Confirm the service supports your devices and the sharing, collaboration, photo, and offline-access features you need. Provider feature pages describe different capabilities; verify support for your actual devices, including Microsoft’s plan features and Dropbox’s security and file features.
- Check the privacy model: Find out whether end-to-end encryption applies to the files and features you care about, what metadata is exposed, and how sharing and account recovery work.
- Check recovery by scenario: Look separately for deleted-item retention, individual-file version history, and account-wide rollback. Verify the plan and account type attached to each feature.
- Protect the essentials separately: Keep an independent copy of the files that would be hardest to recreate.
The official pages cited here describe provider policies and plan features; they do not provide a same-date, independent head-to-head test across services, plans, regions, devices, and recovery cases. Choose for your requirements rather than relying on a universal “best” or “most private” ranking.
