Supply drops have the loot-quality edge in Fortnite Reload v42.20, where Epic says it increased the odds of rarer items appearing inside them. That is a mode-specific change, not a universal rule for Fortnite. In Battle Royale Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, Loot Hacks let players customize chest contents with bonus items. For ordinary play, chests are a dependable way to build a loadout; a supply drop is a potentially higher-upside opportunity that can expose you while you go for it.
Which gives better loot?
It depends on the mode and season. In Fortnite Reload v42.20, the Fortnite Reload Dev Team said, “Better loot inside! We’ve upped the odds of rarer items dropping in.” Epic did not publish a percentage, and the change does not establish that supply drops have better odds in standard Battle Royale or every other playlist. Epic’s Reload v42.20 update notes also say drops arrive closer to the end of storm-circle transitions and are limited to one per circle.

For Battle Royale Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, Epic describes a separate chest mechanic: players can spend Sprite Dust on Loot Hacks to add bonus items to chest contents. That means chest value can depend on the current season and the Loot Hacks a player uses; it is not a fixed, season-independent comparison. Epic’s season announcement explains the feature.

In standard Battle Royale, the available evidence does not establish a universal winner. Check the active playlist’s current rules before applying either conclusion.

How chests and supply drops differ
Chests: a way to build your loadout
Chests provide randomized loot rather than a guaranteed weapon or rarity. In the current Battle Royale season covered here, Loot Hacks can add bonus items to what drops from chests. Their value can therefore vary with your choices as well as the season’s loot rules. Epic’s Creative documentation also describes randomized chest devices, but those are configurable Creative items—not a current Battle Royale loot table. Epic’s chest-device documentation describes those Creative mechanics.
Supply drops: a crate that comes to you
Epic defines a supply drop as a loot crate randomly dropped during a game, usually containing an assortment of weapons, in Battle Royale. That description does not guarantee a particular item or rarity. Epic’s support page provides the definition.

A descending crate can be more visible and may draw attention, making its potential reward a question of timing and position as well as contents. In Reload v42.20 specifically, drops arrive closer to the end of storm-circle transitions. Epic’s Creative supply-drop device documentation describes configurable indicators, map icons, spawn delays, access restrictions, and fall speed; those are Creative settings, not promises about default Battle Royale behavior. - Check your playlist first. Reload’s v42.20 rarity change and drop timing should not be assumed to apply to standard Battle Royale.
- Consider your current loadout. A chance at rarer loot may be less useful if you already have what you need; a chest can be a more practical way to keep building your loadout.
- Weigh the route and timing. A drop can require leaving your position or approaching a visible crate. Decide whether the possible upgrade is worth that detour in your match.
- Account for chest customization in current Battle Royale. Loot Hacks can add bonus items, so your active choices affect how useful a chest may be.
Are supply drops always better than chests?
No. Epic’s documented rarity increase applies to Reload v42.20, and it gives no percentage or guarantee that a particular drop will contain a high-rarity weapon. The current Battle Royale season has its own chest customization through Loot Hacks. Loot pools and mechanics can vary by playlist and change with seasons or updates; a live third-party pool reference likewise warns that season plugins and hotfixes can alter its listed items and weights, so its percentages should not be treated as universal odds.
