These steps make it easier to assess your application; they cannot guarantee approval. The concrete program example below is the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 7(a) loan program. Eligibility and underwriting differ by country, lender, and loan type.
What lenders need to understand
A lender needs to assess both whether your business and requested use qualify for the loan and whether the business can repay it. For an SBA 7(a) loan, a business must meet the program’s eligibility rules and demonstrate creditworthiness and a reasonable ability to repay. Those program conditions do not mean an eligible business will automatically be approved. See the SBA 7(a) overview.

Present a clear account of the financing need, its business purpose, and the repayment source. Avoid treating any one factor—such as a credit score, collateral, or time in business—as a universal approval formula. Lenders may assess several aspects of the business and the people behind it.

Specify the amount and use
Work out how much you need and explain what each part will fund. For SBA 7(a), eligible uses include working capital, certain debt refinancing, real estate, equipment, furniture and supplies, and changes of ownership. Confirm that your intended use qualifies under the program and with the lender. The SBA Lender Match preparation guidance also recommends knowing your amount and use of funds before contacting lenders.

Connect the funding to business needs
Explain how the loan supports the business, using relevant details such as a planned purchase, operating need, or project. A specific request helps a lender assess whether the amount and purpose make sense together. Do not assume that a general claim of growth or a broad estimate will substitute for explaining the need.
Show how the business can repay
Prepare current financial information and projections that make the repayment plan understandable. Explain how the business expects to generate the cash flow needed to meet payments and how the loan funds contribute to that plan. SBA guidance asks borrowers to understand their finances, use of funds, and repayment plan; it does not prescribe one projection format or a universal approval ratio.

Be prepared to discuss the assumptions behind your figures and how existing obligations affect the business’s ability to repay. Lenders may consider cash flow, credit information, equity, and collateral, among other factors. SBA lender guidance describes these as underwriting considerations rather than a single formula; see SBA lender resources.

Review credit, debt, and ownership details
Before applying, review the business’s credit history and the relevant owners’ or guarantors’ credit information. Know what debts the business already carries and be ready to answer questions about them. SBA lenders may use business credit scoring and consider credit scores or histories for applicants, associates, and guarantors.

The cited SBA guidance does not set one universal minimum credit score, revenue threshold, time-in-business requirement, collateral rule, debt-service coverage ratio, or approval probability for all SME lenders. Ask each lender what it evaluates rather than relying on a cutoff found elsewhere.
Gather the records the lender requests
Start by asking the lender for its current application checklist. SBA states that application contents can vary by loan size and lender processing method. For SBA 7(a), Form 1919 collects information about the applicant and owners, the loan request, existing indebtedness, and certain government financing matters. The SBA Borrower Information Form page describes the form, effective March 19, 2025.

Choose lenders and compare actual terms
Look for lenders that offer the type of financing and program you need. You can contact lenders directly or use SBA Lender Match as a starting point for finding potential participating lenders. SBA describes the tool this way: “Lender Match isn’t a loan application — it’s a tool to help businesses find lenders in their communities.” A match does not guarantee that a lender will contact you or offer a loan. If a lender is interested, you still discuss the request and submit that lender’s application.

Compare offers on rates, terms, fees, repayment conditions, and fit with your business’s expected cash flow. The SBA 7(a) program has a maximum loan amount of $5 million, according to its program overview current as accessed October 7, 2026; that is a ceiling, not a typical loan amount or a recommendation for how much to borrow.
Use the right rules for your location
SBA 7(a) is a U.S. program. Its rules are not universal SME-loan requirements. For that program, eligible businesses generally must be operating, for-profit, located in the United States, small under SBA size standards, and not in an excluded category. They must also be unable to obtain desired credit on reasonable terms from specified government sources, as well as meet the creditworthiness and repayment conditions described by SBA.
If you are outside the United States, or applying for a different kind of financing, check the relevant official program guidance and the lender’s requirements. Eligibility, documents, and underwriting differ across jurisdictions and institutions.
A practical preparation sequence
- Define the request: Write down the amount, intended use, and business need it addresses. Verify that the use is eligible for the loan program.
- Build the repayment explanation: Assemble current financial information and projections, and be ready to explain how the business will repay from its expected finances.
- Review credit and obligations: Check relevant business and owner credit information, existing debt, and any government financing history the application asks about.
- Request the lender’s checklist: Gather the records required for your loan size, lender, and processing route rather than relying on a generic list.
- Compare lenders and offers: Ask about rates, terms, fees, and repayment conditions. Treat a referral or match as an introduction, not an approval.
No cited SBA source quantifies how much any preparation step raises approval odds, and the program guidance does not promise approval. The value of preparation is that it helps you make a clearer, better-supported request and assess whether a lender’s requirements fit your business.
