Short answer: Choose the Formlabs Form Studio 1 when a prototype team values a guided, documented workflow, validated materials, optional third-party resins and published dimensional-tolerance data. Choose an ELEGOO Saturn when the priority is lower-cost hardware and very fine LCD pixel resolution, and the team is prepared to calibrate resin, manage supports and handle post-processing itself.

“ELEGOO Saturn” is a product family, not one specification. This comparison separates the Saturn 8K from the Saturn 3 12K, because their build heights and pixel resolutions differ. Neither printer has a published, controlled head-to-head accuracy test against the other, so the recommendation is an evidence-based fit for your workflow rather than a laboratory claim that one machine prints every geometry better.

What each printer is designed to do

Formlabs Form Studio 1

The Form Studio 1 is an MSLA resin printer positioned by Formlabs as “Professional Resin Printing for Anyone.” Its differentiator is not simply the LCD or the nominal layer height. The printer is sold as part of an integrated system that includes PreForm preparation software, Dashboard monitoring, cartridge-based resin dispensing and a library of validated materials. Formlabs lists support for nine of its own materials and third-party resins through the included Open Material Mode.

That integration is aimed at teams that need repeatable handoffs between design, print preparation, production and inspection. It can reduce the number of variables a new operator must learn, although it does not remove the need to orient parts correctly, inspect supports or follow resin safety procedures.

ELEGOO Saturn 8K and Saturn 3 12K

Saturn printers emphasize large monochrome LCD panels, high pixel density and comparatively accessible hardware. The name alone is not enough for a purchasing decision: a Saturn 8K and a Saturn 3 12K have different Z dimensions and different advertised XY precision. Buyers should record the exact generation on a quotation, purchase order and resin-profile library so that replacement parts, exposure settings and build-volume assumptions remain tied to the correct machine.

Published specifications at a glance

Printer XY or pixel specification Build volume Resin and workflow information Published price information
Formlabs Form Studio 1 Formlabs lists XY tolerances down to ±0.08 mm. Prototype Alpha Grey Resin is listed at 50 μm; Assembly Alpha White Resin is listed at 100 μm. 200 × 125 × 235 mm (20.0 × 12.5 × 23.5 cm; 5.9 L) MSLA; nine Formlabs materials plus third-party materials through Open Material Mode; PreForm, Dashboard and cartridge dispensing. Starting printer price of $699, according to Formlabs in 2026. The complete Founders Edition starts at $948 excluding sales tax, according to the same 2026 product information.
ELEGOO Saturn 8K 10-inch monochrome LCD, 7680 × 4320; advertised 28.5 μm XY resolution. 218.88 × 123.12 × 210 mm 28-LED matrix UV source; USB-powered activated-carbon air purifier listed by ELEGOO. Resin profiles require selection and calibration for compatible 405 nm materials. Not stated in the supplied official specification. Verify current regional pricing, tax and stock.
ELEGOO Saturn 3 12K 10-inch 12K LCD; advertised 19 × 24 μm XY precision. 218.88 × 122.88 × 250 mm Resin behavior depends on the selected 405 nm material and exposure settings; the official specification describes the printer hardware rather than an equivalent managed workflow. Not stated in the supplied official specification. Verify current regional pricing, tax and stock.

The Form Studio 1 tolerance figure, the Saturn pixel figures and a resin’s layer-height setting describe different things. Pixel pitch is a hardware sampling dimension; tolerance is a dimensional result that also depends on resin shrinkage, exposure, orientation, supports, post-curing and measurement method. They should not be converted into a single ranking without a controlled test.

Which build envelope fits prototype work?

Footprint and general-purpose parts

All three options provide a similar XY footprint, so the practical difference often appears in the Z direction. The Saturn 8K is slightly wider in one axis but shorter vertically than the Form Studio 1. The Saturn 3 12K provides the tallest build envelope of the three, which can matter for long housings, handles, brackets or parts that must be printed upright to preserve a functional surface.

Before ordering, place the largest expected part, its support raft and a margin for the build plate into a simple CAD bounding-box check. Include drain holes for hollow parts and clearance for removing the finished print. A nominal volume that fits the part but leaves no room for supports can still produce an impractical build.

Batching and fixtures

Prototype throughput is often limited by the number of parts that fit on one plate rather than by the maximum height. Lay out the largest recurring batch in the slicer, including support structures and spacing between parts. If several small components must be printed together, the extra plate area of a Saturn model may offset the value of its lower hardware cost; if the parts are tall, the Saturn 3 12K’s added height can be more useful than a small XY difference.

Detail, fit and dimensional accuracy

What the published numbers mean

Formlabs reports XY tolerances down to ±0.08 mm for the Form Studio 1. That is the only directly stated tolerance figure in the supplied specifications. The Saturn 8K’s 28.5 μm and Saturn 3 12K’s 19 × 24 μm values are advertised pixel or XY-precision specifications, not guarantees that a mating prototype will measure within those limits.

For a prototype that must mate with an existing component, design a calibration coupon with holes, pins, slots and a flat reference edge. Print it in the exact resin and orientation planned for production, wash and cure it according to that resin’s instructions, then measure it with the same calipers, gauges or CMM procedure used for acceptance. Adjust clearances from those measurements rather than from pixel size alone.

Surface quality and small features

Higher LCD pixel density can make edges and text appear sharper, particularly on small features aligned with the screen plane. It does not automatically preserve a fragile wall, a deep hole or a sharp corner through peeling forces and post-curing. Support placement, lift settings, exposure and resin viscosity can dominate the visible result.

Use the finest detail setting only where it contributes to the prototype’s purpose. For a fit-check enclosure, dimensional stability and reliable holes matter more than reproducing cosmetic microtexture. For a visual model, orientation and surface finishing may matter more than the nominal XY specification.

Workflow: where the Form Studio 1 earns its premium

Form Studio 1 process

  1. Prepare the model in PreForm. Import the part, choose the material, orient critical faces and generate supports. Review contact points and likely suction surfaces rather than accepting an automatic layout blindly.
  2. Load the selected cartridge or approved third-party resin. The cartridge approach and validated material profiles reduce manual measuring, while Open Material Mode allows a team to use other compatible materials when it accepts responsibility for settings.
  3. Send and monitor the job. Dashboard provides a central view of jobs and printer status for a team workflow. Confirm that the selected material profile matches the resin physically installed.
  4. Wash, remove supports and cure. Follow the resin’s specified wash and post-cure process. A dimensionally critical part should be measured only after the complete post-processing cycle.

TechRadar described the Studio 1 workflow as professional and relatively low effort. Formlabs also claims that most parts print in under two hours and advertises a 99% print-success rate. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results; actual time and success depend on geometry, layer settings, resin, support strategy and operator handling.

Saturn workflow

  1. Choose a compatible 405 nm resin. Record the brand, color, batch and recommended exposure range. “Standard,” “tough,” “water-washable” and engineering labels are not interchangeable process profiles.
  2. Calibrate exposure and lift settings. Run a validation print, inspect thin walls, holes, embossed text and support contacts, then adjust exposure, lift speed and rest time in small increments.
  3. Orient and support in a slicer. Keep large flat sections from creating excessive peel force. Add drainage and venting to hollow parts and plan how uncured resin will leave internal cavities.
  4. Print, wash and cure consistently. Use the same wash solvent or approved cleaning method and the same cure routine when comparing iterations. Inconsistent post-processing can look like a printer-accuracy problem.

The Saturn 8K specification lists a USB-powered activated-carbon air purifier, but that feature is not a substitute for the resin manufacturer’s SDS, suitable ventilation and protective equipment. The official Saturn information supplied here does not establish an equivalent end-to-end automation layer to PreForm, Dashboard and validated Formlabs profiles.

Open Material Mode expands material choice beyond the Formlabs catalog. The trade-off is responsibility: the team must obtain a compatible resin profile or establish its own exposure and post-cure procedure, then validate the result for fit and durability.

Saturn resin flexibility

A Saturn buyer can choose among many 405 nm resins, but every change in chemistry, pigment, color or batch can alter exposure, adhesion, shrinkage and flexibility. The printer is therefore flexible at the hardware level but less prescriptive at the process level. Keep a written profile for each approved resin and do not assume that settings from one Saturn generation transfer perfectly to another.

Speed and throughput

TechRadar reported dimensions of 342 × 315 × 502 mm for the Form Studio 1, 35 μm XY resolution, 30–250 μm layer heights, up to 130 mm/h with Alpha Fast Resin and approximately 40 mm/h across materials. These are independently reported review data for a new product and should be rechecked against the current product documentation before purchase.

Formlabs’ statement that most parts print in under two hours is a manufacturer claim. Print duration is governed mainly by the number of layers and chosen layer height, not simply by how many parts share a plate. A full plate can therefore be more efficient than several small jobs when all parts use the same resin and orientation.

No equivalent Saturn speed figure is established in the supplied specifications. Compare complete cycle time instead: slicing, warm-up, printing, draining, washing, drying, curing, support removal and inspection. A nominally fast exposure profile that produces failed parts can have lower real throughput than a slower validated profile.

Build a realistic operating-cost model

Cost category Questions to answer Why it changes the prototype decision
Resin What is the price per liter for the approved material, and how much remains trapped in supports, rafts and hollow cavities? Material choice and failed-print waste can outweigh the initial hardware difference.
Failed prints How many validation runs are expected for a new geometry or resin profile? Less experienced operators may spend more on waste while learning an open workflow.
Consumables Budget for release films, screens, vats, gloves, filters, wash solvent and curing supplies. These recurring items affect both downtime and the cost per accepted prototype.
Post-processing Is wash-and-cure equipment already available, or must it be purchased and maintained? Manual washing and curing require labor and controlled space even when the printer itself is inexpensive.
Facilities and safety Can the workspace provide ventilation, spill control, SDS access and PPE storage? Resin handling is an operational requirement, not an optional accessory.
Labor Who prepares files, calibrates resin, removes supports, cleans parts and records inspection results? A guided workflow can be economically valuable when operator time is expensive.

Calculate cost per accepted prototype, not cost per exposure. Include the resin in the failed print, cleaning materials, labor and the time spent diagnosing a defect. For a design studio producing occasional fit checks, the Saturn’s hardware savings may dominate. For a team printing daily and handing jobs between several people, repeatability and reduced setup work may justify the Form Studio 1’s higher package cost.

Safety, ventilation and workspace requirements

Formlabs states that the Studio 1 with Alpha Resins and VOC Extractor is UL GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions. This certification applies to the stated printer, resin and extractor combination; it does not mean uncured resin is harmless or that a different material has the same emissions profile.

The Saturn 8K’s listed USB activated-carbon purifier may reduce odors in some conditions, but it does not replace ventilation or the safety instructions for the selected resin. For either platform:

  • Read and retain the current safety data sheet for every resin.
  • Wear the PPE specified by the resin manufacturer when handling uncured material and contaminated tools.
  • Provide ventilation appropriate to the room, resin and local requirements.
  • Keep uncured resin, wash solvent and contaminated wipes out of ordinary drains and household waste streams; follow local disposal rules.
  • Label containers and separate clean, post-processed parts from uncured or solvent-wet items.

Which printer suits common prototype scenarios?

Small engineering team with repeatable materials

The Form Studio 1 is the stronger fit when several people will prepare jobs and the team wants a documented material catalog, centralized status and less manual dosing. Its published tolerance information also gives an engineering team a starting point for a validation plan, although every critical fit still needs measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent maker or cost-sensitive workshop

A Saturn is attractive when the buyer already understands resin printing, can calibrate 405 nm materials and wants to spend more of the budget on resin, wash-and-cure equipment or multiple printers. The Saturn 3 12K is the relevant generation when additional vertical capacity and finer advertised pixel precision matter; the Saturn 8K may be sufficient when its shorter build height meets the part envelope.

Visual prototypes and presentation models

Either platform can produce detailed visual parts when the operator chooses an appropriate resin and support strategy. Select based on the surface, color, toughness and finishing requirements rather than assuming that a finer pixel specification alone guarantees a better-looking model.

Fit-checks and functional assemblies

Prioritize a repeatable resin profile, controlled washing and curing, support placement and a measurement routine. The printer with the smallest advertised pixel value is not automatically the one that produces the best mating parts. Print calibration coupons and retain the settings with the project documentation.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Name the exact Saturn generation. Decide whether the comparison is with Saturn 8K or Saturn 3 12K, and record the official specification page used for the purchase.
  2. Measure the largest real part. Include supports, drain holes, rafts and removal clearance, then compare the result with the relevant build envelope.
  3. Define the prototype’s acceptance criteria. Specify fit, hole diameter, surface finish, flexibility, heat resistance and cosmetic requirements before choosing a resin.
  4. Estimate accepted-part cost. Add resin, waste, consumables, post-processing, ventilation and operator time to the hardware price.
  5. Plan validation. Print a coupon in the selected material, measure it after the complete cure cycle and document the profile.
  6. Audit the workspace. Confirm ventilation, PPE, spill response, waste handling and a clean area for finished parts.
  7. Check availability. Verify regional tax, stock, warranty terms, replacement films or screens and the contents of any Form Studio 1 bundle.

Limitations of the comparison

The published figures come from different measurement categories and sources. Formlabs’ tolerance and success-rate statements are manufacturer claims; TechRadar’s speed and dimensions are review observations; Saturn pixel and build-volume figures come from ELEGOO’s official specifications. No controlled, lifetime or cost-per-part study directly comparing these printers was identified, so a specific accuracy winner cannot be established from the available evidence.

Verdict

For a professional prototype workflow, the Formlabs Form Studio 1 is the safer recommendation when validated materials, guided preparation, team monitoring and documented handling are worth paying for. Its starting printer price is not the same as the complete operating cost, and Open Material Mode still requires validation when a third-party resin is used.

For value-focused buyers who are comfortable tuning resin and managing post-processing, choose the exact ELEGOO Saturn generation that matches the part envelope. The Saturn 8K offers a shorter build height and 28.5 μm advertised XY resolution; the Saturn 3 12K extends the height and advertises 19 × 24 μm XY precision. Those specifications can be compelling, but they do not replace calibration, safety controls or a measured prototype acceptance test.
