Former PlayStation Studios head Shawn Layden has criticized Sony’s plan to make new PlayStation games digital-only starting in January 2028. His concern is about more than collecting: when a digital purchase is a personal license that generally cannot be transferred, buyers may have access to a game without owning a resellable copy. Sony’s schedule is for the future; physical PlayStation releases have not already ended.
What did Shawn Layden criticize?
In an October 2026 appearance on The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden questioned what buyers own when they purchase a digital game. GamesRadar quoted him describing the change as a shift in the conversation from whether someone “own[s] a game” to whether they “have access to a digital asset.” He also argued: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing.” GamesRadar’s October 5 report presents these as Layden’s views, not a disclosed Sony financial analysis; he said he lacked visibility into the financials.

Layden also acknowledged the convenience of downloading games and described physical buyers as a smaller but “super important” group. His comment that perhaps 80 percent download and 20 percent do not was an illustrative estimate, not measured market data.
When does Sony plan to stop releasing new PlayStation games on disc?
Sony announced that new PlayStation games will be available in digital formats only beginning in January 2028, according to Ars Technica’s report. That is an announced future schedule, not evidence that disc production has already stopped. The announcement concerns new games; it does not establish that existing physical copies or previously released games will disappear.

What does buying a digital PlayStation game mean for resale?
Ars Technica quoted PlayStation Store terms describing a purchase as a personal license for private, non-commercial use that is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise. That is materially different from buying a physical copy that can generally be passed on or resold, subject to local rules and the terms of any sale.
The license language helps explain Layden’s distinction between ownership and access, but it does not prove that Sony will revoke all digital purchases. Nor does it establish the future availability of every game or service. The relevant point is narrower: a digital buyer should not assume that a store purchase can be transferred or resold in the way a physical copy can.
Why is Sony making the change?
Sony’s reported rationale is that player preference for digital media significantly outpaces preference for physical discs. The company said digital downloads represented 78 percent of full-game unit purchases — Sony, fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. This figure describes units of full games purchased through digital downloads; it is not a revenue share or a measure of all games across all platforms.

Sony CFO Lin Tao said the company had considered the decision carefully and would proceed cautiously. A Sony communications executive was also reported as saying that the company did not expect ending discs to have a negative business impact, while acknowledging players’ attachment to physical games. These are Sony’s positions, while Layden’s criticism reflects his own assessment.

Connection access is another concern Layden has raised. In a July 2026 interview discussed by Push Square, he pointed to players with limited broadband, including people on military bases. That is a potential access issue he identified, not evidence that Sony has announced an internet requirement for all future games. Layden also speculated that a future PS6 might not include a disc drive; Sony has not confirmed that hardware detail in the cited reporting. Push Square’s July 3 summary attributes those points to Layden.
