Its main appeal for Windows users is a desktop that can be arranged to feel familiar, plus the option to try it from a USB drive before installing. That does not make it a universal replacement: check your essential apps, games, peripherals, and hardware before switching.
Why Zorin OS is the alternative in this recommendation
The title refers to Zorin OS, as identified in the MakeUseOf article reproduced by Nsane Forums. The case for Zorin is about approachability, not a proven ranking over Linux Mint. Zorin is based on Ubuntu and Linux, includes a software store, and presents itself as an alternative to Windows and macOS.

Its Appearance app provides desktop layouts intended to resemble Windows, macOS, or Linux. A familiar layout may make the transition less jarring, but it does not turn Zorin into Windows: programs and devices still need to be compatible with the new operating system.

Will your Windows apps and devices work?
Zorin says it supports many Windows applications through Windows App Support. “Many” is not a guarantee for a specific program. Compatibility can depend on the application, its version, and how you use it; the available evidence does not establish whether any particular essential app, game, printer, scanner, or other peripheral will work on your setup.

Before switching, make a list of the software and devices you rely on. Check the developers’ or manufacturers’ support information for Linux or Zorin, and try the items that matter most during a USB trial where practical. If a required Windows-only program has no workable alternative for you, do not erase Windows until you have resolved that dependency.
Try it before replacing Windows
Zorin’s installation guide describes running the system from a USB drive, installing it alongside an existing operating system, or erasing the disk. A USB trial lets you explore the desktop without first replacing the installed system, but Zorin notes that performance from USB is slower than from an installed system.

- Beginner-Friendly Interface: Easy to install and use, with a familiar desktop similar to Windows
- Pre-loaded Zorin OS 18 Live Boot & Installation Windows-Like Interface UEFI & Legacy BIOS Compatible Fast & Secure Reusable USB Drive Step-by-Step Installation Guide Lifetime Technical Support
- Modern Desktop Experience: Features an improved menu, better keyboard handling, updated applets, and a polished user experience
- Excellent Hardware Compatibility
- Pre-Installed Productivity Software: Includes web browser, office suite, media players, backup tools, software manager, and system utilities right out of the box
- Back up important computer files. Zorin warns that installing a new operating system may overwrite data; copy important files to external storage or cloud storage first.
- Prepare a USB drive. The guide, last modified 2025-10-07, specifies at least 4 GB for Core or Lite installation media and 16 GB for Pro, Pro Lite, or Education. Creating the installer erases the USB drive, so use an empty drive or back up its contents first.
- Boot from the USB and try Zorin. Check whether your essential apps and peripherals meet your needs. Treat a successful trial as a useful check, not proof that every function or workload will behave the same after installation.
- Choose how to install only after checking your needs. If you want to keep the existing operating system, the guide describes installing Zorin alongside it. Erasing the disk is the replacement path and should come only after you have backed up files and confirmed you can live without the existing system.
Zorin says a dual-boot setup can access files on the Windows drive. That is a vendor statement, not a substitute for a backup or a guarantee about every drive configuration.
