If an online order is cancelled, late, marked delivered but missing, or arrives with the wrong goods, first identify which problem occurred, then contact the seller in writing and keep the records. If the seller does not resolve it, ask your card issuer or payment provider which dispute route and deadline apply. Your legal rights depend on where you live, who sold the item, the purchase terms, and how you paid.
First, identify what went wrong
Check the order page, the promised delivery date, tracking, and any cancellation or refund confirmation. A status label alone may not establish that a refund has been processed or that a parcel reached you.

- Seller cancelled: Check whether the seller confirmed the cancellation and what it says about the refund.
- Delayed: Compare the current estimate with the date promised when you ordered, and look for a delay notice or request for your consent to a new date.
- Marked delivered but missing: Save the tracking details and report non-receipt to the seller promptly.
- Wrong or incomplete order: Compare the delivery with the listing and order confirmation; photograph the goods and packaging if useful.
What to do, in order
1. Save the evidence
Keep the order confirmation, product listing or description, promised delivery date, tracking details, seller messages, and payment statement. For incorrect or damaged goods, take photographs. If you speak by phone, note the date, the person’s name if available, and what was agreed.
2. Contact the seller in writing
Use the seller’s or marketplace’s official contact channel. Include the order number, explain the specific problem, say what resolution you want, and give a reasonable date for a response. Depending on the issue, ask for a corrected delivery, replacement, or refund. Keep the seller’s reply and any cancellation or refund confirmation.

3. Escalate if the seller does not resolve it
Contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly and ask which dispute process applies and when you must use it. Provide a factual account and the records you saved. If you suspect a scam, report it to the appropriate consumer-protection authority where you live.
Which route should you use?

How payment method affects escalation
Credit card
In the United States, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau recommends asking the seller to refund the money or undo the charge first. If that fails, ask the card company whether you can dispute it. CFPB guidance says a charge for an item not received, or delivery not accepted, may qualify as a billing error; for that route, it advises sending a billing-error notice within 60 days after the charge appears on the statement. The issuer can explain how to submit it: CFPB: How do I dispute a charge on my credit card because I never received what I ordered?

The CFPB also describes a separate, limited right to withhold an unpaid balance under specific conditions: a good-faith effort to resolve the problem, a purchase in your home state or within 100 miles, a price over $50, use of a credit card, and an unpaid balance. These conditions do not apply to every dispute and should not be assumed to cover debit cards or third-party buy-now-pay-later services.

Do not assume the credit-card process or deadlines apply. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says debit-card buyers can ask their bank or credit union whether it can help. For a third-party payment service, check that provider’s own dispute terms and deadline.

U.S. rules for a delayed or undelivered order
The FTC’s mail, internet, and telephone order guidance says a seller must ship when it or its advertisement says it will. If no shipping date was stated, the FTC describes 30 days from the order date as the default ship-by period. If the seller cannot ship by the applicable date, it must notify you and give you a chance to cancel for a full refund; the notice and consent procedures matter. The FTC puts it this way: “If they don’t ship then, they have to tell you (and give you a chance to cancel and get a full refund).” See the FTC guide to an online order that never arrives.
The 30-day figure is a default only when no shipping date was stated; it is not a universal delivery promise or a rule for every country. If tracking says delivered but you did not receive the package, the FTC advises contacting the seller first. Keep the tracking record and report the problem promptly.

UK rules: cancellation after delivery is different from non-delivery
For covered UK distance sales, GOV.UK says you can cancel up to 14 days after delivery without giving a reason. If you notify the seller within that period that you want to cancel, GOV.UK says you generally have another 14 days to return the goods. The seller must refund within 14 days of receiving the returned item and refund standard delivery costs. Exclusions include certain travel tickets and financial services. GOV.UK says goods should be delivered within 30 days unless another arrangement was agreed. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, delivery is due by the agreed time or, if none was agreed, within the statutory period. Where the legal conditions are met, you may set an appropriate additional period; if delivery still does not happen, you may be able to treat the contract as ended, with reimbursement due without undue delay. A late parcel does not automatically give every buyer an immediate right to cancel. See the Consumer Rights Act 2015 delivery provisions.
