To buy a phone or other electronic device safely during an online sale, compare the exact model and configuration, calculate the full delivered cost, verify the seller and item condition, and read the delivery, return, payment-protection, and warranty terms before paying. A large discount alone does not show that an offer is good.
This checklist uses U.S. Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance. Return rights, seller policies, and marketplace protections vary by seller, listing, and location.

How do I buy a phone online during a sale?
- Set your requirements and budget. Write down the features you need and separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. For a phone, note the manufacturer, exact model, storage and other configuration details, and whether you want new, used, or refurbished. As the FTC puts it, “Second, determine what’s most important to you about the item you’re thinking about.” (FTC online-shopping security tips transcript)
- Compare like with like. Check the same model and configuration across sellers. A different storage capacity, regional version, bundled accessory, or item condition can make two headline prices incomparable. Price-comparison sites may not include every seller or rank results impartially.
- Calculate the full cost. Add shipping, handling, delivery charges, taxes, and other fees. Read the offer’s fine print and check whether its price depends on buying another product or accepting a condition. The FTC recommends comparing the total cost rather than relying on the advertised price (FTC online shopping guidance).
- Check the seller and listing. Find seller contact information and look for recent buyer feedback from more than one source; do not rely on star ratings alone. Check whether the photos show the actual item or are stock images, and read the condition description closely. Terms such as “used,” “refurbished,” “as is,” and “close-out” can indicate a product that is not in top condition. An unusually low price for an expensive item can be a warning sign.
- Confirm delivery and return terms before checkout. Check the promised delivery date, return window, refund eligibility, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Sale or clearance items may have different return rules. Save the product description, price, order confirmation, and communications with the seller.
- Understand payment and warranty coverage. Check what protection the marketplace offers for this seller and item, who handles refund requests, and any deadline for seeking help. Pay through the marketplace or use a method with recourse, such as a credit card; avoid off-platform payments and payment forms that are difficult to recover. Read the warranty terms and compare any paid service contract with the included coverage.
How can I tell if an online electronics deal is real?
No single sign proves that a deal is genuine. Judge the offer by verifying the seller, the specific item, the full price, and the terms together.

- Check the seller’s identity. Look for contact details and recent feedback on multiple sources. A polished listing or high star rating is not enough on its own.
- Check what is actually being sold. Confirm model, configuration, condition, and whether the images depict the actual item. A low price may reflect a different configuration or a product sold “as is,” rather than a comparable new device.
- Read the complete offer. Look for extra fees, required bundles, delivery conditions, and sale-specific refund rules. Compare the total cost for the same item at other sellers, while remembering that price-comparison results may be incomplete or not impartial (FTC online shopping guidance).
- Keep payment on a protected path. HTTPS means the connection is encrypted; it does not establish that the seller is legitimate. Do not pay outside a marketplace’s system if doing so would remove its protections.
The FTC advises shoppers using online marketplaces to check seller information, ratings and recent comments, item photos, condition details, return terms, and whether the marketplace helps with problems (FTC marketplace guidance).

What should I check before buying a refurbished phone?
“Refurbished” does not by itself tell you the phone’s condition, what work was done, or what protection comes with it. Verify those details in the listing and warranty before ordering.
- Confirm the exact model and configuration, and read the seller’s condition description rather than assuming refurbished means like new.
- Check whether photos show the actual phone or stock imagery, and look for seller contact details and recent feedback from more than one source.
- Read the return window, refund conditions, return-shipping responsibility, and any restocking fee, including whether sale terms change those rules.
- Review the written warranty: what it covers, what it excludes, who provides it, and how to make a claim. Warranty length and terms vary by product, seller, and applicable location; do not assume a universal period.
- Compare the total delivered price with the same model and configuration in other conditions. Include shipping, taxes, and fees rather than comparing headline prices.
Can I return electronics bought on sale?
Do not assume that a sale item has the same return terms as a full-price item. Check the particular listing and seller policy before checkout: the return deadline, whether a refund is available, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee or other condition applies. On a marketplace, the platform’s help with returns or refunds can vary by seller and item. Find out who handles a claim and note the deadline for requesting help (FTC marketplace guidance). Keep a copy of the listing, order confirmation, receipt, and seller communications in case you need to resolve a problem.

How should I assess marketplace protection, delivery, and payment?
Marketplace protections are not interchangeable: one platform may assist with a refund, return, delivery problem, or other dispute in circumstances another does not. Before paying, check whether the protection applies to the exact item and seller, who processes a claim, and how long you have to submit it (FTC marketplace guidance).
