1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most foreign visitors, the cheapest and safest approach is a mix: use an international card (or an authorised tourist UPI wallet where you can actually onboard) for hotels, transport apps and larger merchants; keep a modest amount of Indian-rupee cash for small vendors, tips and outages; and carry a prepaid forex card as a controlled backup if its fee schedule suits you. Always choose to pay in INR rather than accepting a merchant’s conversion to your home currency, and retain every exchange receipt and encashment certificate.
The short answer: do not choose only one payment method
India’s payment landscape is mixed. Large hotels, airlines, malls and established restaurants commonly handle international cards, while neighborhood shops, roadside stalls, local taxis and some attractions may accept only notes or a domestic QR payment. Connectivity and power interruptions can also make a normally reliable electronic method unavailable.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
A sensible wallet for a trip therefore has three layers:
- Primary electronic method: an international credit card, or a tourist UPI/prepaid wallet after you confirm that you are eligible and the merchant accepts it.
- Controlled reserve: a prepaid forex card loaded with a defined travel budget, preferably on a separate account from your main funds.
- Immediate fallback: Indian rupee notes in small denominations for low-value purchases, tips and outages.
The right mix depends on your issuer’s foreign-transaction markup, exchange-rate policy, ATM charges, prepaid-card fees, itinerary and tolerance for carrying cash. There is no universal percentage for acceptance, markup or ATM cost: those figures change by issuer, network, merchant, ATM operator, currency and date.

How the four options differ
| Method | Strengths | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepaid forex card | Preloaded budget; separates travel funds from a main bank account; may hold several currencies; spending is limited to the balance. | Reloads can be slow or unavailable abroad; issuer may charge issuance, reload, inactivity, currency-conversion and ATM fees; unsupported currencies or merchant categories can cause declines. | Planned spending and a backup card when you want a hard budget limit. |
| International credit card | Broad acceptance at hotels, airlines, online services and larger merchants; post-paid cash flow; card-network dispute process; no need to preload. | Foreign-transaction markup and exchange-rate timing vary; cash advances can be expensive; spending creates credit exposure; a “zero markup” offer may exclude cash withdrawals or some transaction types. | Primary electronic payment where the merchant accepts your network. |
| INR cash | Works without a terminal, phone, battery or network; useful for tiny purchases, tips and transport. | Lost or stolen notes are difficult to recover; exchange spreads differ by provider; carrying large amounts creates security and declaration concerns; reconversion may require documentation. | A modest reserve and low-tech fallback. |
| Tourist UPI or prepaid wallet | QR-based payments can be convenient for participating merchants and reduce the number of notes you carry. | Eligibility, KYC, funding, phone connectivity, app support and merchant-QR compatibility all matter; the programme and participating locations can change. | Day-to-day QR purchases after successful setup and a test payment. |
What actually determines your total cost
Compare the complete transaction path, not just an advertised exchange rate. For a card purchase, the cost can include the network’s conversion rate, your issuer’s foreign-transaction markup, taxes applied to that markup, and any fee built into a prepaid-card conversion or reload. A cash withdrawal can add a card cash-advance fee, interest from the withdrawal date, the ATM operator’s charge and a currency-conversion markup.
Before departure, open the current schedule of charges for each card and write down:
- Foreign-currency purchase markup and whether taxes are added.
- ATM withdrawal fee, daily limit, cash-advance interest and when interest starts.
- Prepaid issuance, reload, replacement, balance inquiry, inactivity and closure fees.
- Whether the card uses a different rate for purchases, ATM withdrawals and refunds.
- Dispute deadlines, emergency-replacement procedure and the number to call from India.
For cash, compare the authorised money changer’s quoted INR amount after its spread and any stated commission. Airport counters can be convenient but are not automatically the best value. Never treat the RBI’s cash-exchange limit as a recommendation for how much to carry: RBI directions allow cash payment by foreign visitors or NRIs for buying foreign currency up to US$3,000 equivalent per transaction, subject to the applicable rules.

How a forex card works
A forex card is a prepaid instrument. You load money before spending, and each purchase reduces the available balance. Some products hold one currency; others let you load several wallets. A prepaid balance can make a trip budget visible and limits the amount exposed if the card is lost, but it is not a bank account and the issuer’s terms control every fee and supported transaction.
RBI’s 9 May 2023 circular states that fees and charges payable in India on forex prepaid, stored-value and travel cards must be denominated and settled in rupees. That rule concerns how charges are expressed and paid; it does not set a single fee level. Check the product’s current schedule before loading funds.

When it is useful
- You want to ring-fence a travel budget instead of exposing your primary bank account.
- You need a second card in case your main card is blocked by a fraud system.
- You prefer spending from a prepaid balance rather than borrowing on credit.
- You are travelling with family members and want a controlled supplementary card, if the issuer permits one.
Where it can fail
A card can decline because the merchant’s terminal does not accept its network, the product does not support the transaction currency, offline transactions are blocked, a daily limit is reached or the issuer’s fraud controls require verification. Reloading from abroad may require a supported bank account, app, identity check or working phone number. ATM withdrawals can cost more than purchases, and an inactive balance may attract a fee.
How to prepare one
- Read the fee schedule and confirm the network, supported currencies, ATM limits and expiry policy.
- Load only the amount you can reasonably use, leaving a reserve on another method.
- Record the issuer’s international support number and app-recovery steps offline.
- Make a small test purchase before relying on it for a hotel deposit.
- Keep the card, PIN and recovery details separate; do not store the PIN with the card.
International credit cards: flexible, but never assume they are free
Why travellers like them
Credit cards are often the easiest option for advance hotel guarantees, airline bookings, car rentals, online tickets and larger restaurants. A credit transaction does not consume cash immediately, and the issuer’s dispute process may help when a transaction is fraudulent or a service is not delivered. RBI guidance also describes international cards as usable for merchant payments and ATM withdrawals while travelling abroad, subject to the card’s terms and applicable rules.
The Tool Desk

The card network converts the transaction, while your issuer may add a foreign-transaction markup and taxes. The amount can be determined when the transaction is authorised, posted or settled, so the INR equivalent shown in an app may change. Refunds can use a different rate from the original purchase. A cash advance is a separate product: it may have a fixed fee, a percentage fee, a lower limit and interest from the day of withdrawal.
Marketing language such as “zero foreign-exchange markup” must be read narrowly. Confirm whether it covers ATM withdrawals, refunds, offline terminals, hotel deposits, weekend rate adjustments and every currency you will use.
Choose INR at the terminal
Some terminals and websites offer to convert the price into your home currency. This is dynamic currency conversion. The merchant or its payment provider sets that rate, which can include a markup. Select INR when the terminal gives a genuine choice, then let your issuer perform the conversion under its published terms. Check the screen before approving: the currency symbol, amount and any conversion disclosure should be visible.

Use credit for purchases, not routine cash
Cash advances are usually the most expensive way to obtain spending money because a fee and immediate interest can apply. If you must withdraw, use a reputable bank ATM, take the smallest practical amount, decline the ATM’s home-currency conversion when offered, and keep the receipt for reconciliation.

INR cash: essential backup, poor sole strategy
Cash remains valuable for small shops, tips, local transport, markets, rural areas and any moment when a terminal, QR code, phone or network is unavailable. Carrying a modest reserve in several denominations is more practical than relying on a single large note. Keep daily spending money separate from the rest, and use a hotel safe only when you understand its limits; do not leave your passport or all funds together.
Exchange through an authorised provider and retain the receipt. Avoid informal street exchanges: a favourable-looking quote can conceal counterfeit notes, an altered count or no documentary trail. Count the notes at the counter and check the denomination before leaving.
Reconversion on departure
RBI directions state that non-residents generally need a valid encashment certificate to reconvert unspent INR. Ask the authorised money changer for the certificate when you buy or exchange currency and keep it with your passport records. An authorised person may, at its discretion, reconvert up to ₹10,000 without the certificate when departure is scheduled within seven days and bona fide reasons are established. This is a discretionary exception, not a guarantee, so documentation is safer than relying on it.
Tourist UPI: useful where the programme and merchant line up
The Government of India reported in 2023 that RBI-enabled UPI access allows foreign nationals and non-resident Indians visiting India to make payments, initially extending the facility to G20 travellers at selected international airports. Availability has expanded and changed over time, but it is not a universal entitlement for every visitor or every QR code.

What to verify before depending on it
- Whether your nationality, passport, visa type and phone number are eligible for the current onboarding route.
- Where registration is available, such as a participating airport or authorised provider.
- How the wallet is funded, the KYC documents required and the refund process.
- Whether the merchant uses a compatible UPI QR rather than a bank-specific or closed-loop code.
- What happens when your phone has no data, the battery is empty or the provider’s service is unavailable.
Complete registration while you still have reliable connectivity, set a device lock, enable transaction notifications and perform a small test payment. Keep cash or a card ready because a QR displayed at a shop does not prove that a foreign visitor’s wallet can pay it.
Decision framework: match the method to the purchase
| Situation | Preferred method | Reason and backup |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel deposit or international airline booking | Credit card, with forex card as secondary option if accepted | These merchants usually need a card pre-authorisation. Confirm deposit and cancellation rules; do not rely on cash. |
| Daily meals at established restaurants | Credit card or tourist UPI where confirmed | Electronic records simplify reconciliation. Carry notes for a failed terminal or a service charge that must be paid separately. |
| Street food, small shops, tips and local transport | INR cash; tourist UPI as an optional convenience | Low-value merchants may not accept foreign cards. Use small notes and replenish in modest amounts. |
| Online booking before arrival | Credit card | It is generally the most practical remote method. Review the billing currency and issuer’s markup. |
| ATM withdrawal | Debit or credit card only after checking fees; forex card can be a backup | Decline dynamic conversion, expect operator and issuer fees, and avoid credit cash advances when another source is available. |
| Network or power outage | INR cash | Electronic methods can fail together. A reserve protects the next meal, ride or night’s accommodation. |
A practical setup before you fly
- Audit every fee. Save the current schedules for your credit card, forex card and bank account as PDFs or screenshots.
- Notify issuers. Use the issuer’s travel-notice process if it has one, and confirm international transactions and contactless payments are enabled.
- Prepare two independent electronic methods. Keep cards from different issuers or networks where possible, rather than two cards that can be blocked by the same account.
- Arrange a small INR reserve. Obtain it from an authorised provider and keep the receipt and any encashment certificate.
- Set up phone resilience. Install banking and wallet apps, enable roaming or a local data option, carry a charging solution and store support numbers offline.
- Test each method. Make a small purchase, verify notifications and learn how to freeze a card immediately.
- Separate credentials. Use unique app passwords, device lock and two-factor authentication; never disclose a PIN or one-time code to a caller claiming to be support.
How to pay safely in India
- Check the amount and currency on the terminal before tapping or inserting a card.
- Choose INR instead of a merchant’s home-currency conversion when the terminal offers a choice.
- Keep your card in sight at restaurants and collect it immediately after payment.
- Use ATMs attached to banks or secure indoor locations; shield the PIN and inspect the slot for tampering.
- Do not hand over your phone unlocked for a QR payment. Open the wallet yourself and verify the payee name.
- Retain receipts, screenshots and transaction alerts until the charge has posted and any deposit has been released.
- Freeze a lost card in the app first, then call the issuer using a number obtained from its official app or card documentation.
Common mistakes and how to recover
A terminal asks for your home currency
Cancel or back out of the conversion screen and select INR if that is the available alternative. If the transaction already posted in your home currency, record the receipt and ask the issuer whether a dispute is possible; a reversal is not guaranteed.
Your card is declined
Do not repeatedly retry a suspicious terminal. Check that the card is unlocked, the PIN is correct, the balance or credit limit is available and international use is enabled. Try another terminal or payment method, then contact the issuer. Keep enough cash for the immediate purchase.
An ATM offers a guaranteed exchange rate
That is usually dynamic currency conversion. Compare the displayed INR amount and decline conversion to your home currency when you want your issuer to set the rate. Cancel if the ATM does not clearly show the fee or amount.

Your phone or wallet stops working
Switch to your physical card or cash, connect through a trusted network, and contact the wallet provider through its official support channel. Never share an OTP to “restore” an account.
What to carry on a typical itinerary
For a city-and-tourist circuit, carry one primary international credit card, a separate prepaid forex card or second card, and enough INR for a day of small purchases and an unexpected transport or meal expense. Increase the cash reserve only when your route includes rural areas, long journeys or vendors known to be cash-only. Keep larger reserves locked or distributed rather than in one wallet.
Business travellers with frequent hotel and online charges may value credit-card acceptance and detailed statements, while budget travellers may prefer a prepaid balance that prevents overspending. Families should split cards and cash between adults so one lost wallet does not eliminate every payment method.
Bottom line
Use an international credit card for formal and online spending when its current markup and cash terms are acceptable. Add a prepaid forex card if a separate, preloaded budget and backup access justify its issuer fees. Carry INR cash for small merchants, tips and outages, and keep the exchange paperwork needed to reconvert leftovers. Treat tourist UPI as an optional layer that you verify and test, not as a guaranteed replacement for cards or notes. Paying in INR, checking every fee and maintaining independent backups will usually matter more than choosing a single “best” instrument.
