A story can be an official FNAF release without its events taking place in the games’ continuity. The best way to read the franchise is to treat each format and adaptation on its own terms, and to avoid using a familiar character or location as proof that two stories share a timeline.
What “canon” means in FNAF
Readers often ask whether a book or the movie is “canon.” That can mean two different things: whether a work is an official part of the franchise, or whether its events belong to the same continuity as the games. Those claims are not interchangeable.

Scholastic’s catalogue identifies multiple official FNAF book lines and formats. But a publisher’s inclusion of a title in the franchise does not, by itself, establish that its plot happened in the games’ timeline. Likewise, an adaptation based on a film is not automatically evidence that either version shares the games’ continuity.

How the books fit with the games
The Silver Eyes and the original trilogy
Scholastic identifies The Silver Eyes as the first FNAF book. Its publisher description follows Charlie and her childhood friends as they return to a family restaurant associated with a past crime. Apple Books also lists it as Original Trilogy Book 1.
For continuity, the important qualification is a creator statement reported by Grant DeArmitt at Popverse in an October 28, 2023 article: Scott Cawthon cautioned against fitting the books and games together as if they were puzzle pieces. Because the original post was not independently verified here, this is best treated as a secondary report of his position, not as a direct quotation. It supports reading the original novel trilogy as its own version of the franchise story rather than as a key that unlocks the game chronology.

Fazbear Frights and Tales from the Pizzaplex
Scholastic lists both as FNAF book lines. That establishes their place among the franchise’s official spin-off publications, but the publisher information available here does not settle whether every story in either series shares game continuity. It would be too broad to say either that all of these stories are game-canon or that none are.

Graphic novels and other book formats
Scholastic’s catalogue includes graphic novels as well as prose titles. A change in format does not answer the continuity question: a graphic novel can adapt or retell a story without proving that its events share the games’ timeline. Check what a particular volume is described as adapting before drawing conclusions about its relationship to another work.

Are the FNAF films in the games’ timeline?
The evidence cited here does not establish an official declaration that the films share the games’ timeline. Popverse’s 2023 article discusses interpretations of the movie’s continuity, but its author’s view about an adaptation is not an official ruling. The most accurate answer is therefore that a shared film-and-game timeline is unresolved by the available evidence.
Recognizable characters or concepts may connect the film to the wider franchise, but resemblance alone cannot show that the movie’s events happened in the game chronology. Treat the film as its own screen continuity unless an authoritative statement establishes otherwise.

Where the official movie novel fits
Scholastic describes the official movie novel as a book based on the 2023 film. That makes it a film tie-in; the description does not establish whether every detail of the novel is identical to the film, nor does it place either version in the games’ timeline. Keep the novel’s relationship to the film separate from the film’s unresolved relationship to the games.

A practical way to follow FNAF lore
- Choose a continuity first. If you want to follow events as they happen in the games, use the games as your main sequence rather than inserting every book or film into it.
- Read adaptations as adaptations. When a publisher describes a book as based on a film or another work, that tells you about its source, not necessarily whether it shares a timeline with every other FNAF release.
- Separate confirmed facts from interpretation. Label a connection as a theory when no authoritative statement establishes it. Do not turn shared names, places or concepts into proof of a shared chronology.
- Keep later book stories open where evidence is incomplete. For Fazbear Frights and Tales from the Pizzaplex, assess claims story by story rather than making a blanket ruling about an entire line.
Age guidance for the books
Scholastic recommends the FNAF series for grades 7 and up. That is the publisher’s guidance, not an independent assessment of every book or of every reader’s suitability.
