The practical decision depends on your interface, team experience, required native integrations, and results from release-build tests on your target devices.
How Flutter and React Native build their interfaces
Flutter draws its own UI
Flutter builds, lays out, composites, and paints its widget-based interface through Flutter itself rather than translating widgets into equivalent operating-system controls. An embedder hosts the Flutter engine and connects it with operating-system services, including input, accessibility, and display surfaces. This approach gives a team substantial control over a unified visual system, but it also means the team should deliberately check platform conventions and accessibility behavior. Flutter’s architectural overview explains this model.

React Native uses native components
React Native lets a React application use native platform views and widgets, along with native modules for platform services. That can suit teams seeking platform integration and working with React, JavaScript, or TypeScript. Native components do not eliminate the need to test each platform or verify that third-party dependencies remain compatible. See React Native’s Native Platform guide.
Which is faster?
There is no supported universal winner. Flutter’s performance guide describes a goal of 60 frames per second, or 120 fps on devices that support it; a stated goal is not evidence that every app will achieve it. Flutter also provides profiling tools. Flutter’s performance guide covers measurement.
#1 Best Overall
React Native likewise recommends measuring performance in release builds. Its documentation notes that native-stack navigation can outperform JavaScript-based stack navigation out of the box, but outcomes depend on the implementation, rendering workload, device, libraries, and release configuration. See React Native’s performance overview.
For a useful comparison, build representative screens and interactions in both frameworks when feasible. Profile release builds on devices relevant to the product, measuring startup, scrolling, animation smoothness, memory, binary size, and the specific native integrations the app will use. Compare the results with the product’s own requirements rather than turning documentation goals into a head-to-head benchmark.
What the New Architecture means for React Native projects
React Native 0.82, released October 8, 2025, was the first version to run entirely on the New Architecture. Its opt-out flags no longer restore the Legacy Architecture. The release describes interoperability layers, but advises teams blocked by an incompatible third-party dependency to contact its maintainers. Read the React Native 0.82 release post and check the compatibility of the dependencies your app actually needs.

Expo also reported that approximately 83% of SDK 54 projects built with EAS Build used the New Architecture as of January 2026. That statistic describes Expo SDK 54 projects built with EAS Build, not all React Native projects. Details are in Expo’s New Architecture guide.

Native integrations: check the app’s requirements
Both frameworks can connect to platform capabilities, but neither removes all native development or dependency work. Flutter supports platform channels, native code, and embedding native controls; the appropriate route depends on the feature and target. React Native exposes native modules and platform components. Before committing, list the OS APIs, plugins, and libraries the app requires, then verify they work on each target platform and, for React Native, with the New Architecture.
How to choose between Flutter and React Native
| Decision factor | Flutter may fit when | React Native may fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Team experience | The team is ready to adopt Dart and Flutter’s widget model. | The team already works with React and JavaScript or TypeScript. |
| UI approach | A unified, framework-drawn interface and control over rendering are priorities. | Native platform components and React-oriented composition are a closer match. |
| Native integrations | The required plugins and embedder integrations are available and tested. | The required native modules and components are available and support the New Architecture. |
| Performance | Release builds meet the product’s frame-time and resource goals. | Release builds meet the product’s frame-time and resource goals. |
| Web or desktop targets | Target-specific behavior fits the planned experience. | The React Native ecosystem, plus any separate web or desktop solution, fits the planned targets. |
| Ongoing maintenance | The team can manage Dart and Flutter upgrades and plugin compatibility. | The team can track React Native releases and native-library compatibility. |
Use this as a shortlist, not a substitute for checking the app’s actual targets and dependencies. Existing expertise can affect ramp-up and maintenance, but it does not establish that one framework will be cheaper for every team.

React Native’s release documentation says new minor versions ship about every two months, usually six per year. On October 7, 2026, its schedule listed versions 0.86 and 0.87 as active and 0.88 as a future release planned for October 12, 2026; that date was scheduled, not a completed release. Because release status changes, check the React Native releases overview when planning an upgrade.

For either framework, include upgrade effort, dependency support, CI and build setup, store releases, and the work of keeping plugins and platform integrations current in your maintenance plan. Compare the specific libraries and targets you intend to use rather than relying on package counts alone.
