Jellyfin has not disappeared from Fire TV, but newer Fire TV Stick models may use Vega OS instead of the Android-based platform that runs Jellyfin’s Android TV app. For a Vega OS device, the app identified here is Astra, a third-party Jellyfin client. First check your Stick’s operating system: the right app depends on the device, not just the Fire TV name.
Why Jellyfin may be missing from a new Fire TV Stick
“Fire TV Stick” covers devices with different operating systems. Jellyfin’s official Android TV client is documented for Android TV and Fire TV devices, but that does not mean it works on every Fire TV generation. In a May 24, 2026 project update, Jellyfin said newer Fire TV Stick models released since 2025 use Vega OS. The update described Jellyfin’s own Vega OS client as being in prototype phase at that time; that dated status does not establish its release status today.

A Jellyfin repository issue about the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) also identifies that particular model as running Vega OS rather than Android or Fire OS and says it is incompatible with the Android TV app. That issue concerns one model; it is not a compatibility list for every Fire TV model or region. Check the operating system on your own device rather than relying on its product name.
Which Jellyfin app to use
Vega OS Fire TV: Astra
Astra’s developer describes it as a native Jellyfin client for Fire TV devices running Vega OS. The Astra site says the app connects to a Jellyfin server you run, does not require an Astra account or hosted service, and is available through the Amazon Appstore. These are the developer’s claims, not independent tests across devices or server configurations.

Before installing, confirm your device runs the required Vega OS version and check the current app listing, since versions and availability can change.
Android-based Fire TV or Android TV: Jellyfin’s official client
For a compatible Android-based Fire TV device, or an Android TV device, use Jellyfin’s official Android TV client. Jellyfin’s client directory lists its Android TV app, and the Android TV client repository names Android TV, Nvidia Shield, and Amazon Fire TV among its supported device categories. Confirm that your specific device can install the app; the broad category listing does not settle compatibility for every model.

How to check your device and connect Astra
- Check the model and OS in Fire TV settings. Find the device information in Settings and verify whether the Stick runs Vega OS or an Android-based system. Do not infer the OS from “Fire TV Stick” alone.
- If it runs Vega OS, check the requirements. Astra’s help page specifies Vega OS 1.2 or later for the version documented there. Check the current instructions and Amazon Appstore listing before proceeding.
- Find Astra on the device or use its Appstore listing. The developer’s help page describes both routes; the available listing may vary over time.
- Select your Jellyfin server or enter its address. Astra’s instructions say it can use a discovered server or an address you provide, then asks you to log in.
Astra is a client, not a hosted media library: you still need a Jellyfin server. Its developer says the app can discover a server on the local network or accept an address for a remote server. Your network and server configuration must allow the Fire TV to reach it; the developer’s setup description does not guarantee that every local or remote configuration will work.

Astra’s release notes list fixes for resuming a title, switching audio tracks, and enabling burned-in subtitles—behaviors that could close the app after the Vega OS 1.2 update. That history makes the app version relevant when troubleshooting, but it does not prove every playback issue is fixed on every setup.

The available sources do not establish an independent head-to-head comparison of Astra and Jellyfin’s Android TV client for picture quality, speed, stability, codec support, or ease of use. Choose based first on which operating system the device runs and which client it can install, then check current version notes if a specific playback feature matters to you.

An Android TV streaming device is one possible alternative if you are choosing replacement hardware, but the cited Jellyfin documentation supports a platform category, not a particular current model or performance guarantee. Before buying, verify the exact model’s operating system and Jellyfin compatibility rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “Fire TV” or “Android TV” label.
