Florida and three other states sued TP-Link Systems Inc. on October 6, 2026, alleging the company misled consumers about router security and its ties to China. Those are allegations, not a court finding that TP-Link lied. The lawsuits also do not establish that every TP-Link router is unsafe. For owners, the practical question is whether their exact model is supported, updated, and configured securely.
Why is Florida suing TP-Link?
Contemporaneous reporting says Florida, Montana, Nebraska, and Iowa filed suits against TP-Link Systems Inc. on October 6, 2026. The report describes the states’ accusations as including concealed China links and deceptive promotion of router security. Law360’s report identifies a Florida complaint, but its text was not available for review. That means the specific claims, counts, quoted marketing statements, and requested relief in Florida’s pleading cannot be stated here as established details.

Florida’s suit followed an earlier consumer-protection inquiry. On December 2, 2025, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced an investigative subpoena concerning TP-Link’s cybersecurity practices, supply-chain infrastructure, handling of U.S. consumer data, and evidence supporting product-security claims. The office said the investigation was ongoing and that the subpoena was not a determination of wrongdoing. Uthmeier said, “Floridians deserve to know the truth about the security of the products they bring into their homes.” Florida Attorney General’s announcement

The states’ claims should be distinguished from independently described security events. The U.S. Department of Justice said Russian military intelligence actors exploited known vulnerabilities in thousands of TP-Link routers worldwide, stealing credentials and using compromised devices to redirect DNS requests. DOJ described a court-authorized operation to disrupt that DNS-hijacking network on April 7, 2026. DOJ announcement and router guidance

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
That federal account establishes a reported exploitation campaign involving vulnerable routers; it does not prove every claim in the state consumer-protection suits. In particular, it does not establish that TP-Link knowingly misrepresented security, that the Chinese government accessed user data, or that every TP-Link model is vulnerable. The lawsuits remain allegations, and the reviewed sources do not report a court finding that TP-Link lied.
What does TP-Link say?
TP-Link’s press-release listing says the company responded to the four states’ lawsuits on October 6. Its statement reads: “TP-Link stands behind the security, quality, and performance of its networking products and fully complies with all U.S. regulatory requirements.” This is the company’s position, not independent verification of its security claims. Are TP-Link routers safe?
The available information does not support a simple yes-or-no answer for the entire brand. DOJ’s account concerns routers with known vulnerabilities that were exploited; it does not identify every affected model or establish that all TP-Link devices share the same exposure. A router’s risk depends on its exact model and firmware, whether it still receives security support, and how it is configured.
Do I need to replace my TP-Link router?
Not solely because the company has been sued. DOJ’s guidance for small-office and home-office router owners is to replace devices that have reached end-of-life or end-of-support, install the latest firmware available for the exact model, verify DNS resolvers in router settings, and review firewall rules for unwanted exposure of remote-management services. - DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Support status: Check the manufacturer’s support and end-of-life information for the exact model. If it no longer receives security updates, replacement is the prudent course.
- Firmware: Confirm that the latest firmware for that model is installed, using the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.
- DNS settings: Verify that the DNS resolvers shown in the router settings are authentic and expected.
- Remote management: Review firewall and administration settings so remote-management services are not exposed unnecessarily.
- Evidence scope: If a vulnerability notice names a product family, check whether it applies to your precise model and firmware version rather than assuming all products are affected.
A device named in litigation is not, for that reason alone, proven compromised or unsafe. Replacement is grounded in the router’s support status or a specific security concern—not the lawsuit by itself.
