If “Flip on short edge” or “Flip on long edge” is missing, prints the back upside down, or does not print both sides, first check the selected printer and app, then match the flip edge to how the page should turn. The setting controls page orientation—not whether a printer supports automatic duplex. Use a one-sheet test to verify the result before printing a full document.
Identify what is going wrong
These symptoms have different likely causes, so start with what you see:

- The duplex option is missing: the selected printer may not be configured for duplex, or the model may not support automatic two-sided printing.
- Both sides print, but the back is upside down: the flip edge may not match the document’s layout or intended binding.
- Only one side prints: check whether the app is set to print one-sided, whether manual duplex is available, and whether the printer supports automatic duplex.
- The job does not print at all: test printing from Windows to separate an app or document issue from a printer, connection, or driver problem.
Microsoft calls printing on both sides “duplex printing.” Its Word duplex-printing guidance explains automatic and manual options, but the labels and available settings vary by app, driver, and printer.
Check the selected printer and duplex setting
- Open the document’s print screen and confirm that the intended printer is selected. A setting shown for one printer may not be available for another.
- Look for Print on Both Sides, Print on Both Sides (Flip pages on long edge), or a similar duplex option. Exact wording depends on the app and printer driver.
- If the option is absent, check the printer’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact model’s duplex capability and setup instructions. In Word, Microsoft says that seeing Print on Both Sides indicates duplex printing is set up.
Do not assume that Windows is at fault just because the control is missing. The printer may lack automatic duplex hardware, or its driver may not expose the feature. If the printer supports duplex but the option remains unavailable, check the manufacturer’s driver and setup instructions.

Choose long edge or short edge based on how the page turns
The flip-edge choice determines how the reverse side is oriented relative to the front. The right option depends on the document’s layout and the way you intend to turn or bind it; neither choice is universally correct.
| Setting | What to check | Best verification |
|---|---|---|
| Flip on long edge | Whether the reverse side is upright when the sheet turns along its long side, as in a typical book-style page turn. | Check the print preview, then print one sheet. |
| Flip on short edge | Whether the reverse side is upright when the sheet turns along its short side, as in a top-bound layout. | Check the print preview, then print one sheet. |
If both sides print but the back is inverted, change the flip edge and inspect the preview again. Microsoft’s Publisher guidance for printing a publication on both sides recommends switching to short edge when the preview in its postcard workflow shows backs that are not upright. That example is specific to the layout; use your own preview and a test sheet rather than treating short edge as a universal fix.

Use manual duplex if automatic two-sided printing is unavailable
Some apps, including Word, may offer manual duplex printing when automatic duplex is not available. The app prints one side and prompts you to turn and reinsert the pages for the second side.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In the print screen, look for a manual duplex option, such as Manually Print on Both Sides.
- Print a single sheet first and follow the app’s prompt and the printer model’s feed instructions for turning and reinserting paper.
- Check that test sheet before printing the rest of the document.
Do not rely on a generic instruction such as “put the stack face up” or “turn it over”: input trays and paper paths differ by printer. Microsoft describes Word’s manual-duplex workflow in its duplex-printing documentation.

Print a Windows test page to isolate the problem
A Windows test page helps determine whether the problem is limited to one app or document, or whether Windows cannot communicate with the printer.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, select the printer, and open its printer properties or management options. Labels can vary by driver and Windows build.
- Choose Print Test Page, if available.
- If the test page prints, return to the app that failed and check its printer selection, duplex setting, document layout, page size, and orientation.
- If the test page fails too, troubleshoot the printer connection and driver before focusing on the flip-edge setting.
Microsoft’s Windows printer troubleshooting guidance recommends the Windows test page as a way to check whether printing works outside a particular app.

Work through broader Windows printing failures
If Windows cannot print a test page, use Microsoft’s general troubleshooting steps in order. They address printing and connection problems broadly; they are not guaranteed fixes for a duplex setting or an inverted back side.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Run the printer troubleshooter: on Windows 11, start with the printer troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as described in Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guide.
- Restart and check connections: power-cycle the printer and computer, then check the USB cable or wireless connection.
- Remove and reinstall the printer: use Windows printer settings, then add the device again and confirm that the correct printer is selected.
- Update the driver: check Windows Update and the printer manufacturer’s support page for the latest driver and model-specific instructions.
- Reset the print spooler if earlier steps fail: Microsoft includes spooler troubleshooting in its guidance. Clearing spooler files is an advanced step; follow Microsoft’s instructions carefully rather than deleting files without guidance.
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. If you are troubleshooting on Windows 10, account for that status when looking for current Windows support and updates; printer-specific driver availability remains dependent on the manufacturer and model.
When the problem is likely in the app or document
If Windows prints a test page but duplex printing fails only in one app, stay within that app’s print workflow before making system-wide changes. Confirm the correct printer, select a two-sided option if available, and check the document’s page size and orientation. Use print preview to look at the front and back, then test one sheet. If the app does not expose duplex controls, check its help and the printer driver’s settings; available controls differ across programs.
