If sfc /scannow reports damaged files—or fails to finish—use Microsoft’s standard repair sequence: run DISM from an administrator Command Prompt, then run SFC and follow the exact message it returns. The right next step depends on whether SFC found no corruption, repaired it, could not repair some files, or could not perform the scan.
Run DISM before SFC
Microsoft recommends repairing the Windows image with DISM before running System File Checker. DISM can provide the files SFC needs to repair protected system files. These are built-in Windows tools; the ordinary repair sequence does not require a paid utility.

Run
sfc /scannow. Microsoft describes the command this way: “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” Microsoft Support: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. -
Keep the Command Prompt open until verification reaches 100% and SFC displays its result.
DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default. If Windows Update cannot supply the needed files, DISM can use a suitable source instead; see Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions and Microsoft Learn’s Windows image repair guidance.

Choose the next step from SFC’s exact result
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
SFC found no missing or corrupted protected system files. If the problem that led you to run SFC is still happening, investigate that symptom separately; this result does not establish that every Windows problem has been ruled out.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
SFC reports that it repaired the detected files. Check whether the original issue is resolved. If it persists, troubleshoot that issue on its own rather than repeatedly treating a successful repair message as proof that it remains an SFC problem.
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”
Use the SFC details in CBS.log to identify the files and the time of the affected scan. Then consider whether a suitable DISM repair source or a Windows recovery option is appropriate. Do not download individual system DLLs from unofficial sites.

“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”
Microsoft advises trying the scan in Safe Mode and checking whether the PendingDeletes and PendingRenames folders exist under %WinDir%WinSxSTemp. This message indicates that the scan operation did not complete as requested, so first address that failure rather than treating it as a report of successfully identified corruption.

Find the files SFC could not repair in CBS.log
From an elevated Command Prompt, run Microsoft’s extraction command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
Open sfcdetails.txt on the Desktop and find entries whose date and time match the latest SFC run. The extracted file can contain entries from every SFC run, so an older failure is not necessarily evidence of a current one. Note the file paths associated with the current result before choosing a repair path.

For an offline scan or repair, use the actual Windows and boot locations in the recovery environment. Drive letters can differ from those used when Windows is running; Microsoft’s example using a Windows directory on D: is not a reason to assume that your installation is there. Confirm the paths before running an offline command.
When Windows Update cannot provide DISM repair files
If DISM cannot get repair files from Windows Update, Microsoft documents using a suitable Windows installation as a source, including a Windows side-by-side folder on removable media or a network share. Its example uses /Source and /LimitAccess; the source must match the Windows image being repaired. A generic USB drive is not automatically a suitable source. Follow Microsoft’s source-selection instructions or image repair documentation rather than guessing a path or using mismatched media.
Separate a documented Defender-module issue from general SFC errors
Microsoft documents a specific case in which SFC flags files in the Windows Defender PowerShell module folder and directs affected systems to use DISM repair. That guidance applies to the documented issue; it is not a general explanation for every unexpected SFC result. See Microsoft Learn’s article on SFC flags for Windows Defender PowerShell module files.

If the repair sequence does not solve the original problem
An SFC result describes the scan of protected system files; it does not by itself diagnose every cause of a Windows symptom. If the symptom remains after the standard DISM-then-SFC sequence, move to troubleshooting specific to that symptom or consider Windows recovery options. Microsoft says reinstalling Windows may be needed if its manual system-file replacement steps do not work. Manual replacement is an advanced step: use official instructions and files appropriate to the Windows installation rather than casually copying files from another computer. See Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
