When @mentions stop working in Microsoft Teams, it usually isn’t “random.” It’s almost always one of a few predictable issues: notification settings, the message type (chat vs channel), client cache/state, browser limitations, or—less often—tenant/admin policy.
This guide walks you through the latest practical fixes for 2024, with step-by-step actions across Windows/Mac, web, and mobile. Use the checklist order—most cases resolve quickly.

Why Teams @mentions Fail (Common Causes in 2024)
Teams @mentions can fail either when you can’t create a mention or when the mentioned person doesn’t get notified. Those are different problems with different causes.

- You mention the wrong identity (wrong tenant user, guest vs member, misspelling, stale cached directory data).
- Message scope mismatch: channel mentions vs chat mentions behave differently, and some contexts don’t surface notifications the way you expect.
- Client-side state issues: stuck Teams session, corrupted cache, outdated app build.
- Browser-specific problems on Teams on the web (permission prompts, third-party cookie restrictions, extensions blocking scripts).
- Admin/policy constraints (e.g., guest mention rules, notification delivery policies, network/tenant outages).

- Confirm the mentioned user’s status: are they active, offline, or in DND?
- Test a fresh mention in a new message in the same place (chat or channel).
- Check spelling and ensure you selected the correct person from the suggestions list.
- Verify your message actually posts (no stuck spinner, no send error).
If mentions fail in one conversation but work in others, skip ahead to the scope and client sections.
Fix 1: Verify You’re Mentioning the Right User and the Correct Scope
Teams mentions rely on the directory and the specific conversation scope. If you don’t pick the suggestion correctly, Teams may send the message without a real mention.
- Type
@and the user’s name, then click the exact person from the dropdown. - Confirm you’re in the right team/channel or 1:1/group chat where they belong.
- If you’re mentioning a guest, confirm guest mention/notification is allowed by your tenant and that the guest has access to the team/channel.
Also watch for similar names. A wrong selection can look right to you but won’t resolve as the intended mention.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 2: Confirm Your Mention Notifications Are Enabled
This is the most common “it doesn’t work” scenario: the mention exists, but the recipient doesn’t get notified.
Windows, macOS, and iOS/iPadOS (general notification checks)
- Open Microsoft Teams.
- Go to Settings (your profile picture in the top-right).
- Select Notifications.
- Find the section for Mentions and ensure it’s enabled (sound/banner depending on your preference).
- Verify you haven’t turned off notifications entirely.
Then confirm the recipient isn’t in Focus/Do not disturb. If they’re set to DND, mentions can be suppressed or delayed depending on their configuration.

- macOS: System Settings > Notifications > Microsoft Teams > allow notifications and alerts.
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > Notifications > Microsoft Teams > allow alerts.
- Android: Settings > Apps > Teams > Notifications > allow alerts.
Fix 3: Check Channel vs Chat Mention Behavior
Teams mentions are most reliable when you use the correct mention behavior for the conversation type.
Channel posts
When you mention in a channel, the message may generate different notification behavior depending on the channel type and team settings. Make sure you used @ mention and selected the person from the dropdown.

Chat posts
Mentions in chats are usually straightforward. If chat mentions fail but channel mentions work, it points to either conversation membership, chat policy, or client state.
Fix 4: Refresh the Teams Client and Clear Local Cache
If @mentions fail due to client state, clearing cache often fixes it. This is safe, but you’ll need to sign in again if you’re logged out after the cleanup.
Windows (Classic steps that still work)
- Close Microsoft Teams completely (including the tray icon).
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- In Task Manager, end tasks named Teams (and any leftover ms-teams process).
- Press Win + R, paste:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
- Delete the folders named Cache and GPUCache (if present).
- Restart Teams and sign back in if prompted.
macOS
- Quit Teams.
- In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder….
- Open:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams
- Delete Cache (and any similarly named cache folders you see).
- Reopen Teams and try the mention again.
Fix 5: Repair Microsoft Teams Status and Update State
A stale client build can cause subtle UI issues (including mention resolution failures). Also verify your presence isn’t preventing expected alerts.

Check for updates
- Open Teams.
- Click your profile picture (top-right) > Check for updates (or confirm you’re on the latest available build).
- Restart Teams after updating.
If your organization manages updates, you may need to wait for rollout or try the web client temporarily as a workaround.
Sign out/in when Teams is in a bad state
- Open Teams settings.
- Choose Sign out.
- Sign back in and retest the mention in a new message.
Fix 6: Re-check Meeting/Recording Context and Permissions
If you’re mentioning someone in a meeting chat (or trying to mention from meeting-related surfaces), permissions and chat type can change how notifications behave.
- Try mentioning in a regular team channel first to confirm the user can be mentioned normally.
- In meeting chat, confirm the participant is actually part of the meeting chat thread.
- If the meeting chat is restricted by policy, guest access can limit mention behavior.
Fix 7: Browser (Teams on the Web) Mention-Specific Fixes
If you use Teams in a browser and mentions fail, treat it as a separate environment problem. Browser extensions and cookie rules can break mention rendering and notification delivery.
Browser baseline
- Use a current browser version (latest Chrome, Edge, or Firefox).
- Disable ad blockers or script blockers for teams.microsoft.com.
- Allow notifications in the browser for Microsoft Teams.
Then reload the page and try the mention again.
Clear site data
- Open browser settings > Privacy & security.
- Find Cookies and site data.
- Clear site data for teams.microsoft.com (don’t clear your entire browser history if you can avoid it).
- Sign back into Teams and test.
Confirm the recipient sees the mention
Ask the recipient to check the chat/channel for the mention tag (@username) and verify they can see it highlighted.
Fix 8: Mobile (iPhone/iPad/Android) Mention Fixes
Mobile notifications have extra layers: in-app settings, OS notification permissions, and sometimes background restrictions.

iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings > Notifications > Microsoft Teams.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Enable Sounds and ensure banners/alerts are allowed.
- Open Teams, go to Settings > Notifications and confirm Mentions is enabled.
If the phone is set to Focus (Do Not Disturb), mentions may not alert until Focus ends.
Android
- Settings > Apps > Teams > Notifications.
- Turn on notifications and allow sound/banners.
- In Teams app settings, verify mention notifications are enabled.
- Check battery optimization: disable aggressive battery saver for Teams if it’s throttling background activity.
Fix 9: Admin/Policy and Tenant-Level Issues (When It’s Not Your Client)
If you’ve validated settings, cache, and multiple devices/browsers, the issue may be policy-driven. This is more likely when mentions work for some users but not others (or only for guests/external identities).
What admins should check
- Guest access and external collaboration policies (whether guests can be mentioned/alerted).
- Notification-related tenant settings and service health.
- Conditional access or network restrictions causing delayed or missing notifications.
- Teams app version rollout where some builds have known issues.
If you’re not an admin, the practical step is to report: time of occurrence, affected users (member vs guest), affected platform (desktop/web/mobile), and whether the mention appears visually.

Use this sequence like a decision tree. Each step reduces variables—user settings, scope, then client/browser state, then policy.
- Recipient check: Ask the recipient to open Teams and search for the message—does the mention show as an actual @mention?
- Same user, different conversation: Mention them in a new chat and a channel. If one works, the other scope is the problem.
- Different device: Test the sender from a second device (e.g., desktop + web). If only one environment fails, it’s client-specific.
- Cache reset: Clear Teams cache (Fix 4) and sign out/in.
- Update Teams and restart.
- Browser test: If you’re using the desktop app, test the same mention on teams.microsoft.com. If you’re using web, test the desktop app.
- Notification test: Have the recipient confirm mentions in Settings > Notifications and ensure OS notification permissions are enabled.
- Rule out DND/Focus: Disable Focus temporarily for the test.
If none of the above helps, gather diagnostics for your IT/admin: timestamps, conversation URLs (if accessible), user types, and screenshots showing the typed mention.

Common Mistakes That Break Mentions
- Not selecting from the dropdown. Typing @name without choosing the suggested identity can lead to non-mention text.
- Mentioning outside membership. Mentioning someone who isn’t in the team/channel can fail silently.
- Relying on browser notifications settings without allowing notifications for Teams on the web.
- Forgetting mobile OS permissions. Teams in-app settings can be correct while iOS/Android blocks alerts.
- Ignoring notification overrides like Focus/DND.
- Assuming it’s a rendering issue when it’s actually delivered to an inbox/notification queue that isn’t visible to the user.
FAQ: Teams @mention Not Working
Does @mention work differently in a channel versus chat?
Yes. Mentions in channels and chats can produce different notification outcomes based on how notifications and conversation context are configured.
I can see the @mention highlight, but I don’t get notified. What should I check?
Check Settings > Notifications for Mentions, then confirm your OS notification permissions and that Focus/DND isn’t suppressing alerts.
The mention suggestion list doesn’t show the correct user. Why?
This usually points to directory/cached identity issues or scope/membership problems (wrong team/channel, guest access, or outdated client state). Try cache reset and confirm the user can access that conversation.
Mentions work on desktop but not on Teams on the web. How do I fix it?
Clear site data for teams.microsoft.com, disable blocker extensions for that site, and confirm browser notification permission. Then reload and retest.
Mentions work for some people but not for others. Is it a Teams bug?
More often it’s policy or user notification configuration. Check whether affected users are guests vs members, and verify their mention notification settings and device permissions.
Bottom Line
Most “Teams @mention not working” problems come down to notifications and client state, not the mention itself. Confirm the recipient’s Mention notifications, verify OS permissions and DND/Focus, then reset Teams cache and retest in both chat and channel contexts.
If it still fails across devices and browsers, treat it as an admin/policy issue and report it with clear evidence: whether the @mention renders correctly and who is affected (member vs guest, platform, timestamp).
