When Word displays “Product Activation Failed” or “Unlicensed Product,” first check which account owns your Office license and whether that license is still active. The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis: a mismatched account, duplicate Office installation, expired subscription, or product-key issue can each prevent activation.
1. Confirm you’re signed in with the account that owns Office
In Word, check the account currently signed in, then compare it with the personal, work, or school account used to buy or redeem Office. A valid license can appear to be missing if Word is signed in to a different account.

For a personal Microsoft account, check Services & subscriptions and look for the Office product or Microsoft 365 subscription. If the product is not listed, try the account associated with the purchase or redemption. Microsoft’s activation guidance covers account and license checks.
2. Check for duplicate Office installations
More than one installed Office copy can cause activation conflicts. On Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (the label may vary by Windows version) and look for Office or Microsoft 365 entries. Before uninstalling anything, confirm which edition you use and whether another person or work/school account depends on it. Remove only an unused copy, restart the computer, and open Word again.

3. Check whether your subscription or license is active
If you use Microsoft 365, confirm that its subscription has not expired. Microsoft says an expired subscription must be renewed for continued use of the subscription version of Office. A computer that came with Word preinstalled does not necessarily include an active paid subscription; check the account’s license rather than assuming the app’s presence means it is licensed.
Microsoft also notes that subscription verification can fail after an extended period offline, usually around 30 days. Connect to the internet and sign in with the licensed account so Office can verify the subscription. See Microsoft’s subscription status guidance.

4. Follow the instructions for your Office version and device
Microsoft 365 or Office on Windows
After checking the account and license, use Microsoft’s Windows activation troubleshooter and steps. The available procedure depends on whether you have Microsoft 365 or a one-time-purchase edition such as Office 2024, 2021, 2019, or 2016.

Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the Office license, then confirm that the license appears for that account. If the account is correct but activation still fails, use Microsoft’s Mac activation guidance for sign-in and Mac-specific credential issues. Do not run Windows-only activation tools on a Mac.

5. If Word reports a product-key problem
Use the specific error as your guide rather than buying another key immediately. A key that has already been redeemed is associated with the account used to redeem it; manage the product through that account instead of trying to reuse the key. Other errors can involve an incorrect or blocked key, a region mismatch, or a key intended for business or school use.
Follow Microsoft’s product-key error guidance to identify the relevant case. If you bought a new, unused retail key to renew an expired Microsoft 365 subscription, Microsoft documents redeeming that key as a renewal route; it is not a general fix for every activation error.

6. If this is a work or school device, contact IT
Organization-managed Office installations can use different licensing and activation processes from personal copies. Ask your IT administrator to check the organization’s license assignment before changing accounts, removing license data, or attempting a reset. Microsoft’s enterprise activation reset guidance includes advanced license, registry, and credential changes; it is intended for the managed activation scenario, not as a first consumer troubleshooting step.
What to expect if activation remains unresolved
Microsoft says that when Microsoft 365 or Office activation fails, Word may show “Unlicensed Product” and most features become disabled. If you do not want to renew a Microsoft 365 subscription, Office on the web is an alternative. Microsoft says reduced-functionality desktop Office may still open and print existing documents, but creating and editing documents are disabled when the subscription has ended.
