But it is not a co-op Zombies replacement. The game is explicitly single-player, and its third-person survival-horror roguelite loop also asks you to manage and repair a train. Its dog protagonist is part of the premise, not a reason by itself to recommend the game.
What is Fright Train?
Fright Train is a PC game released on Steam on September 15, 2026. You play Doug Barker, an anthropomorphic dog and paranormal special agent responding to a distress signal from the L.R.S. Great White, a locomotive research station racing through Antarctica. The publisher describes it as “Resident Evil Mercenaries meets old-school CoD Zombies on the Snowpiercer.” That is a useful shorthand for the monster combat and survival pressure, but the game has its own priorities beyond shooting enemies.

In the publisher’s description, you fight creatures in the train’s corridors, scavenge resources, and keep the train operational. Some repairs take you outside into Antarctica’s cold and danger. The publisher’s launch announcement sums up that trade-off: “Keeping the train moving is just as important as keeping yourself alive.” Fright Train on Steam
How close is it to Call of Duty Zombies?
The comparison makes sense if what you want is a monster-survival loop built around fighting, collecting resources, improving equipment, and responding to successive threats. The Steam demo description adds details including procedurally generated train areas, credits used to unlock cars and rooms, vending machines, weapon upgrades, storm-triggered enemy waves, and extraction objectives. These are descriptions of the game and demo, not independent test results. Steam game and demo page

- The Best Shooter Experience on Console in 2017 - Daily Star
- An Explosive Return to its Roots - The Telegraph
- Call of Duty returns to its roots with Call of Duty: WWII a breath-taking experience that redefines World War II for a gaming generation
- Experience three different game modes: Campaign, multiplayer and co-operative
- Experience Call of Duty combat, the bonds of camaraderie and the unforgiving nature of war against a global power throwing the world into tyranny
There are also important differences. Fright Train is third-person action survival horror, and scavenging, inventory and train upkeep share the spotlight with combat. Its advertised roguelite structure asks players to adapt their equipment and strategy between runs. The Steam description identifies it as single-player, so it does not recreate the cooperative play that is central to many players’ idea of Zombies.
| What you may be looking for | What Fright Train offers |
|---|---|
| Monster waves and combat | Creature combat, with the demo description also listing storm-triggered enemy waves. |
| Scavenging and upgrades | The publisher emphasizes limited resources and scavenging; the demo description adds credits, unlockable areas, vending machines and weapon upgrades. |
| Replayable runs | The publisher advertises roguelite adaptation between runs; the demo description mentions procedural train areas. |
| Co-op Zombies sessions | Not the same fit: the Steam description lists Fright Train as single-player. |
| A straightforward shooter | Expect survival-horror tasks, including managing supplies and repairing the train, alongside combat. |
Does the dog protagonist change the recommendation?
Doug Barker’s appearance makes the game an unusual-looking horror adventure, and the publisher’s premise puts him at the center of its Antarctic train setting. GameSpot also described the game as combining third-person gunplay and inventory management with mascot-style characters and a roguelite structure. The character may appeal to players who enjoy offbeat horror, but it does not establish how good the combat or survival systems are. GameSpot’s Fright Train preview

What can player reports tell you about bugs?
Steam community reviews captured in September 2026 include individual reports of controller, inventory, enemy-wave and softlock bugs; some reviewers also said developers were patching issues. These are anecdotal reports, not a measured bug rate or confirmation of the current build. They are a reason to check recent reviews and update notes if a specific technical issue would affect your purchase, not enough evidence to label the current release broadly broken.
