First Stars: How Simulations Trace Their Impact on the Universe

The first stars ionized primordial hydrogen and helped seed later generations with heavier elements. Simulations explain these mechanisms, but their masses and total role in reionization remain uncertain.

The first stars transformed their surroundings in two major ways: their ultraviolet light ionized primordial hydrogen, and some of their deaths spread heavier elements into space. Supercomputer simulations help explain how those changes could happen, but they model specific parts of the story—not a directly observed population or a single settled account of the first stars.

What made the first stars different?

Population III stars formed from gas made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium, with only tiny amounts of lithium and no heavier elements left by earlier stars. Astronomers call elements heavier than helium “metals.” With no previous stellar generation to enrich their birthplace, these stars formed in chemically primitive conditions unlike those around stars that came later. NASA’s explainer estimates that the first stars may have appeared as early as about 100 million years after the Big Bang; that is an estimate, not a precisely established date. No metal-free Population III star has been directly identified in that NASA account. Their existence and effects are inferred from physical models and indirect evidence, including the history of cosmic reionization and the chemical composition of later stars.

How did their light change the universe?

Ultraviolet radiation ionized hydrogen

Energetic ultraviolet photons from the first stars could strip electrons from surrounding neutral hydrogen, leaving hydrogen ions and free electrons. As this process spread, it contributed to reionization—the transition from the largely neutral universe of the cosmic Dark Ages toward an ionized universe. NASA describes reionization as one of the few ways to study the earliest stars indirectly. NASA Science: Early Universe

Radiation also affected the next stages of star formation

Ionizing radiation did not simply illuminate the early cosmos: it changed the gas around the stars. Simulations of early galaxies have examined how radiation from the first stars could drive gas out of shallow dark-matter halos, influencing whether and when those environments could form more stars. The strength and reach of this effect depend on the modeled system and its assumptions. NASA Technical Reports Server: Resolving the Formation of Protogalaxies: Feedback from the First Stars – 3

Reionization is not evidence that Population III stars alone completed the process. The available sources do not establish their precise share; later galaxies are also considered sources of ionizing ultraviolet light. NASA: Mapping the Universe’s Earliest Structures with COSMOS-Webb

How did their deaths seed later generations?

Some massive early stars ended in supernovae. Their explosions could disperse elements forged inside the stars into surrounding gas. That enrichment changed the material from which later stars formed, marking a transition away from the nearly metal-free conditions of Population III star formation. Simulations of feedback in early protogalaxies model this alongside the effects of stellar radiation; the result is a connected sequence of star formation, gas disruption and chemical enrichment, not a claim that every first star exploded in the same way. What do the simulations actually model?

“A supercomputer simulation of the first stars” can refer to calculations at very different scales. A protostellar system, a single halo and an assembling early galaxy are not interchangeable targets. Their results should be read in light of the scale, included physics and assumptions of each calculation.

The First Stars: A Low-Mass Formation Mode (NASA Technical Reports Server; work published in 2014) Cosmological initial conditions, minihalo formation and collapse of central gas into a modeled stellar system. The 5,000 years describes the modeled stage, not a star’s lifetime or the duration of the universe-wide first-star era.
How Very Massive Metal-Free Stars Start Cosmological Reionization (NASA Technical Reports Server) Cosmological radiation-hydrodynamical calculations using nonequilibrium primordial chemistry and radiation transport. Resolving the Formation of Protogalaxies: Feedback from the First Stars – 3 (NASA Technical Reports Server) Simulations of feedback from first stars in assembling early dwarf galaxies. How radiation can expel gas from shallow halos and supernovae can enrich surrounding material.

These examples illustrate why no one calculation answers every question. Some models concentrate on protostellar growth; others follow radiation through primordial gas or investigate feedback across an early galaxy. A separate NASA account of an early-black-hole simulation describes hydrodynamics, chemical reactions, radiation absorption and emission, and star formation—an example of coupled physics, not a checklist that applies to every first-star simulation. How certain are estimates of first-star masses?

There is no single settled mass distribution in these sources. NASA Science gives a broad estimated range of about 10–300 solar masses for likely massive first stars. A 2011 NASA/JPL report, describing the interpretation of one study, said the first stars were “definitely massive, but not to the extreme we thought before.” That historical result should not be mistaken for a current consensus or a direct measurement; it shows that estimates can shift with the simulations and assumptions used. What can simulations tell us—and what remains open?

Simulations test whether proposed physical processes can produce outcomes consistent with the early universe: primordial gas can collapse, stars can emit ionizing radiation, and some stellar deaths can enrich their surroundings. The predictions depend on modeled initial conditions, resolution and feedback assumptions. A result from a focused calculation is evidence about that modeled case, not a direct observation of the first stars or a complete simulation of cosmic history.

  • Well-supported mechanisms: ultraviolet radiation can ionize hydrogen, and supernovae from some massive early stars can disperse heavier elements.
  • Still uncertain here: the exact formation date, the typical masses or full mass distribution, and the fraction of reionization attributable to Population III stars alone.
  • How to assess a new result: check whether it models a protostar, halo or galaxy; which physics it includes; and what indirect observation could test its prediction.

The clearest picture is therefore a physical sequence rather than a precise census: the first stars formed from nearly pristine gas, altered their surroundings with radiation, and in some cases enriched them through explosions. Their lasting cosmic role is reconstructed through simulations and indirect traces, not direct identification of a metal-free star.
