If your Windows 11 pointer feels too slow, too fast, hard to track, or unpredictable, start with Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse and adjust Mouse pointer speed. Then test Enhance pointer precision, improve visibility with a short pointer trail or a larger, higher-contrast pointer, and use Mouse Keys if the physical mouse cannot be controlled reliably.
These controls solve different problems. The speed slider changes how far the pointer travels; Enhance pointer precision changes motion behavior; trails and pointer appearance help you find the pointer; Mouse Keys switches input to the numeric keypad. There is no Microsoft-recommended number that is optimal for every person, mouse, display, or task.

Identify what “cursor speed” actually means
People often use “speed” for several different pointer problems. Separating them prevents you from changing the wrong setting.

1. Adjust Mouse pointer speed first
The main Windows 11 control is the Mouse pointer speed slider. Microsoft describes the path this way: “In the Bluetooth & devices > Mouse window, use the slider next to Mouse pointer speed to set the mouse pointer speed.”
Exact steps
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices in the left navigation.
- Open Mouse.
- Find Mouse pointer speed.
- Move the slider a small amount, then immediately test the pointer in the same task that felt wrong.
Use a middle position as a starting point rather than jumping to an extreme. Move one increment at a time while selecting text, crossing the desktop from one edge to the other, and positioning the pointer over ordinary buttons. Those actions expose different control issues: text selection reveals fine control, long screen crossings reveal overall travel, and buttons reveal whether you can stop accurately.
How to judge the result
- If a normal hand movement does not move the pointer far enough to reach a target, increase the slider slightly.
- If you regularly overshoot buttons or have to make repeated corrections, decrease it.
- If the pointer feels fine at one speed but erratic at another, leave the slider near the comfortable point and evaluate Enhance pointer precision separately.
- Test at the display scaling and monitor arrangement you normally use. A pointer that feels appropriate on a laptop screen may feel different when crossing a larger or multiple-monitor desktop.
The slider is a software control for pointer travel. It does not repair a failing sensor, a dirty mouse surface, a wireless connection that drops input, or a physically damaged button. If movement stops, skips, or freezes rather than merely feeling too slow, treat that as a hardware or connection problem instead of continually changing the slider.

Enhance pointer precision changes how Windows interprets mouse motion. Microsoft describes it as making the pointer more accurate when the mouse is moved slowly. In practical terms, it changes motion behavior and acceleration: the relationship between the physical distance and speed of your hand and the distance the pointer travels is not identical at every movement speed.

Open the control
- Return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Additional mouse settings. This opens the classic Mouse Properties dialog.
- Choose the Pointer Options tab.
- Turn Enhance pointer precision on or off.
- Select Apply, then test the same movements with the setting in its new state.
Do not assume that “enhance” is automatically better. It is a behavior change, not a second version of the main speed slider. A person doing general desktop work may prefer the way acceleration helps a quick sweep cover a large screen while preserving slower movement for small targets. Someone who needs a predictable one-to-one feel, such as a precision graphics user or a player who has trained to a fixed response, may prefer to compare both states and keep the one that is easier to reproduce.
A controlled comparison
- Place the pointer over a small target such as a text insertion point or compact button.
- Move the mouse slowly and deliberately, then repeat the movement faster over the same physical distance.
- Drag-select a short phrase and then a longer paragraph.
- Repeat the sequence with Enhance pointer precision in the opposite state.
- Keep the state that lets you stop and correct the pointer most consistently for your principal workload.
Change only this checkbox during the comparison. If you alter the speed slider, pointer size, and trail at the same time, you will not know which change helped. Windows does not publish a universal setting that wins for every mouse and user, so your repeatable tasks are the useful test.
3. Add a short pointer trail when the pointer disappears
A pointer can seem slow or laggy simply because you lose sight of it against a busy window or while moving quickly. Display pointer trails leaves a temporary visual trail behind the pointer so your eyes can follow its path. It affects visibility, not the pointer’s underlying velocity.
Turn on and tune trails
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Select Additional mouse settings, then open Pointer Options.
- Enable Display pointer trails.
- Use the trail-length slider and start near Short.
- Select Apply and check the pointer against the applications you use most.
A short trail is a sensible first adjustment because it improves tracking without leaving a long visual smear across the screen. Increase the length only if you still lose the pointer during quick movement. If the trail distracts you during detailed work, reduce it or turn it off; it cannot make a physically slow mouse move faster.

Trails are especially useful when the pointer is moving normally but your eyes cannot reacquire it after a fast sweep. They are less useful when the pointer actually pauses, jumps, or fails to respond, because those symptoms indicate an input, connection, or system issue rather than a visibility issue.
4. Make the pointer larger or change its style and color
Windows 11 can improve pointer visibility without changing movement at all. This is important when a small white pointer disappears over a light document, a dark pointer vanishes over a dark application, or a high-resolution display makes the pointer difficult to locate.
Change appearance in Accessibility
- Open Settings from Start.
- Select Accessibility.
- Open Mouse pointer and touch.
- Adjust the pointer-size control until the pointer is easy to find without obscuring nearby text or controls.
- Choose a pointer style or color. Windows provides white, black, inverted, and bright recommended color choices.
Choose a size that remains visible at the distance and display arrangement you normally use. A larger pointer can make target acquisition easier, but an excessively large pointer may cover small interface details. Inverted or bright colors can provide more contrast when the desktop alternates between light and dark areas.
These controls do not accelerate the pointer. Their benefit is that they reduce the time spent searching for it and make the same movement easier to observe. If you can see the pointer clearly but it still travels too far or too little, return to the speed slider instead of increasing its size.

5. Use Mouse Keys when keypad control is more reliable
Mouse Keys is a separate input method. It lets the numeric keypad move the pointer instead of relying on a physical mouse. It can help when the mouse is unavailable, intermittent, difficult to operate, or unsuitable for a particular accessibility need.
Enable Mouse Keys and set its speed
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Open Mouse.
- Turn on Mouse Keys.
- Open Mouse keys speed and choose the pointer speed options provided there.
Mouse Keys uses the numeric keypad, so a keyboard without a usable numeric keypad may not provide the same control. The speed options in this area apply to keypad-driven movement; they are not another adjustment for the ordinary mouse pointer. Switch back to the physical mouse settings when the mouse is working normally.
This mode is a fallback and an accessibility option, not a way to make a sensor-based mouse faster. If keypad movement works reliably while the physical mouse skips or disconnects, that contrast is useful evidence that the physical device or its connection needs attention.
Use the settings in an order that isolates the cause
Changing every option at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Use this sequence and perform a short, familiar task after each change.

Write down the state that works for your main task before experimenting further. That gives you a known baseline and makes it easy to undo a change that helps one activity but harms another.
Choose settings for the task, not a universal number
| Task context | First adjustment to evaluate | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| General desktop work | Mouse pointer speed, then Enhance pointer precision | Can you reach distant controls without overshooting small ones? |
| Text selection and document editing | Moderate pointer speed and a direct comparison of Enhance pointer precision | Can you place the insertion point and stop at the intended character? |
| Precision graphics work | Compare Enhance pointer precision states with the same speed | Can you repeat the same hand movement and obtain a predictable result? |
| Pointer hard to locate | Short pointer trails, then size and color | Can you reacquire the pointer quickly without a distracting smear or oversized pointer? |
| Mouse unavailable or unreliable | Mouse Keys speed | Does numeric-keypad movement provide dependable control? |
The right choice depends on the workload, the pointer device, and the display. Windows supplies controls rather than a single correct value, and Microsoft’s guidance does not publish a universal numeric setting.
When changing these settings does not fix the problem
The pointer is jerky, freezes, or jumps
The five controls above change software behavior or visibility. They do not repair intermittent wireless reception, a failing battery, a damaged cable, a sensor that cannot read the surface, or a mouse that is physically failing. If the pointer stops responding or jumps even after you choose a comfortable speed, test the mouse on a clean, suitable surface and check its connection before making more Windows adjustments.
The pointer feels delayed rather than slow
A delayed response is different from a low pointer-speed setting. Check whether the delay occurs only in one application or across the desktop. If it is application-specific, the application may be busy; if it occurs everywhere, investigate the mouse connection and system responsiveness. Pointer trails can make movement easier to follow, but they do not remove input delay.
The pointer is moving normally but cannot be found
Use the visibility controls: begin with a short trail, then adjust pointer size or choose a contrasting style/color under Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch. Increasing the speed slider would not address a pointer that is already moving at the expected rate.
A setting appears to help one task but hurt another
Keep the speed slider stable and compare Enhance pointer precision for the specific workload. General navigation, text selection, and precision applications can reward different motion behavior. If no single state works for every activity, choose the state that supports the task you perform most and use pointer visibility changes to reduce search time in the others.
What each setting can and cannot solve
- Mouse pointer speed: fixes consistently excessive or insufficient pointer travel.
- Enhance pointer precision: changes acceleration and motion behavior; it requires a personal comparison.
- Pointer trails: improve visual tracking only.
- Pointer size and style/color: improve contrast and visibility only.
- Mouse Keys: supplies numeric-keypad control as a separate input method.
Apply one change at a time, test it with a repeatable task, and keep the smallest adjustment that solves the observed problem. That approach produces a more predictable setup than choosing an extreme value because the pointer felt wrong for a single moment.
