If audio seems slowed in After Effects, first determine whether its pitch is lower and its duration longer, or whether playback is stuttering or falling out of sync only in the preview. Preview settings, performance, and audio-output configuration can affect what you hear while editing. A short export is the quickest way to check whether the problem is limited to preview.
Is the audio truly slower, or is preview playback struggling?
Listen for the difference between a genuine speed change and a preview problem. Slowed audio usually sounds lower in pitch and takes longer to finish. Stuttering, brief dropouts, or audio drifting behind the picture point instead to playback that is not keeping up.

- Lower pitch and longer duration: Check whether the same change appears in a rendered file.
- Stutters or drops out: Check preview frame rate, caching, and system load.
- Falls out of sync: Compare normal preview with audio-only preview and a short export.
Adobe notes that preview audio can stutter to maintain sync when playback falls below real time. That can explain choppy or unsynchronized preview, but it does not establish that a slow preview generally changes the source audio’s pitch or duration. Preview behavior can be configured by shortcut, so check the shortcut you actually use rather than assuming one setting controls every playback method.

- Open the Preview panel and identify the active preview shortcut.
- Check that shortcut’s Frame Rate and confirm Play audio is enabled if you expect sound.
- Try Auto for Frame Rate. Adobe says Auto makes the preview and composition frame rates equal.
- Play the composition again and note whether the issue changes.

Verify project sample rate and audio output
Project and device settings are worth checking when preview audio sounds wrong or behaves inconsistently. The project sample rate is configured separately from the selected audio hardware and output mapping.

- Open File > Project Settings and inspect the Audio sample rate.
- Open After Effects preferences and go to Audio Hardware.
- Check the selected device class, the chosen or default output, and the hardware sample-rate settings.
- Inspect Audio Output Mapping to make sure the intended output is mapped.
Do not change the sample rate to an arbitrary value: use settings appropriate to the project and delivery requirements. Adobe explains that audio hardware and output mapping affect preview behavior in its preview documentation.
Reduce preview load if playback stutters
After Effects uses available RAM for real-time preview and can use disk caching for longer previews. Heavy compositions or system load can make preview less responsive; performance adjustments help test whether the symptom is limited to playback rather than altering the source audio.

- Lower the composition preview resolution and replay the same section.
- Allow the preview to cache before judging playback.
- Review memory allocation and media-cache settings.
- Close other demanding applications temporarily to see whether system load is contributing.
Adobe describes memory and cache controls in its memory and storage guide and performance adjustments in its performance guide. These steps address preview responsiveness; they do not prove the source audio was slowed.
Compare preview with a short export
Preview hardware settings and final output settings are distinct. Adobe says audio hardware preferences affect previews, while output-module settings determine final audio quality. Export a short section and play it outside After Effects before changing source media or buying hardware.

- Export sounds normal: Focus on preview settings, caching, and the selected output device.
- Export also has lower pitch or longer duration: Investigate source interpretation, time stretching, applied effects, and export settings in the context of the specific project and After Effects version.
The documented preview and output controls help separate these cases, but they do not identify the cause of an altered export in an individual project.

If the checks do not isolate the problem, provide details that distinguish a preview issue from a rendered-audio issue:
