Fiber Patch Cord or Pigtail: Which End Connection Do You Need?

A patch cord connects two compatible ports with connectors on both ends. A pigtail has one connector and a bare end intended for splicing.

A fiber patch cord has connectors on both ends, so it can plug into two compatible ports. A fiber optic pigtail has a connector on one end and bare, unterminated fiber on the other, which is typically spliced to a fiber in a splice tray. Choose based on what the connection needs at its second end: another plug-in port or a splice.

How a patch cord and a pigtail differ

Assembly Ends Typical role
Fiber patch cord Connectors on both ends Links compatible equipment or panel ports, such as switches, patch panels, and optical distribution frames. CommScope patch-cord guide
Fiber optic pigtail A connector on one end; unterminated fiber on the other The unterminated end is commonly spliced to a fiber held in a splice tray. Pigtails are also used between patch panels and splice panels or trays. Corning glossary and Corning installation procedure

The end configuration is the reliable distinction. Patch cords are often used for flexible connections and pigtails are often part of a splice installation, but not every patch cord is temporary or every pigtail is permanently installed.

When to choose each

Choose a patch cord for two connector ports

Use a patch cord when both ends of the link must plug into compatible connector ports—for example, between network equipment and a panel. Check that the connectors at each end match the ports; an assembly may have the same connector at both ends or different connectors, depending on the link design.

Choose a pigtail for a splice termination

Use a pigtail when one end must connect to an unterminated fiber through a splice arrangement. The pigtail’s connector provides a plug-in interface, while its bare end is prepared and joined to the fiber in a splice tray. Corning’s procedure describes splicing the unterminated pigtail end to buffered fibers in the tray.

What to verify before ordering

For either assembly

  • Fiber mode: Match single-mode or multimode fiber to the link and connected equipment.
  • Connector and polish: Confirm the connector type and end-face polish required at the port or interface. A connector that looks similar is not necessarily compatible.

For a patch cord

  • Both ends: Specify the connector type and polish at each end, including any differences between them.
  • Length and environment: Choose a length suited to the route and a cable construction appropriate for where it will be installed.
  • Optical performance: Check insertion loss and return loss against the requirements of the link. CommScope identifies these among patch-cord performance considerations in its selection guidance.

For a pigtail

  • Splice-side requirements: Confirm fiber type, fiber count, and cable construction for the splice panel or tray and the network design.
  • Connector end: Specify the connector type and polish required at the panel or equipment interface.
  • Assembly configuration: Pigtails vary in fiber count and construction; check the details rather than relying on the product name. CommScope pigtail product information

A quick selection rule

  1. If both ends need to plug into compatible connector ports, specify a fiber patch cord.
  2. If one end needs to be joined to an unterminated fiber in a splice arrangement, specify a fiber optic pigtail.
  3. Before ordering, confirm fiber mode, connector type and polish, and the length or splice requirements for the installation.

A product label alone does not establish compatibility. The connector, fiber, and termination details must match the actual link design.
