If a terminal, editor, or automation agent cannot find python—or finds the wrong Python—check the exact process’s shell, PATH order, and startup files before reinstalling pyenv. Pyenv relies on command-forwarding shims on PATH; missing initialization, a competing executable earlier in PATH, stale shims, virtual-environment activation, and unsupported platforms are different problems with different fixes.
Start in the shell or process that fails
A terminal and an editor-launched task may start with different shells or read different startup files. Run diagnostics in the failing context rather than assuming that a working interactive terminal has the same environment as an agent or editor.

Check whether the shell can locate pyenv:
command -v pyenv. If the command is not found, the problem is earlier than Python shim lookup: the pyenv executable’s directory may not be on this process’s PATH.The Tool Desk

Check which Python command would run:
command -v python. If the command exists, this shows the executable selected by the current PATH, not necessarily the version you intended. -
Print PATH one entry per line to inspect its order. In Bash or Zsh, use
printf '%sn' "$PATH" | tr ':' 'n'. Look for pyenv’s shim directory and for another Python installation or manager ahead of it.
Pyenv stores its data, installed versions, and shims under PYENV_ROOT; the documented default is $HOME/.pyenv. Its executable directory must also be available to the shell. See the pyenv README for the project’s setup details.
If pyenv itself cannot be found
When command -v pyenv returns nothing, rebuilding shims will not help: the shell cannot invoke pyenv in the first place. Check whether the pyenv installation’s bin directory is on PATH and whether the startup file responsible for setting PATH was loaded. The project documents PYENV_ROOT and shell setup in its README.

If pyenv is found but python is missing or wrong, continue with the shim and version checks below.
If Python is missing or the wrong executable wins
Pyenv’s shims are command-forwarding scripts. The shim directory—normally $(pyenv root)/shims—must be on PATH, and it must precede competing Python executable directories when you expect pyenv to handle the command. The project README describes pyenv init --path as a way to set up shims; it can also put them at the front after other shell logic prepends paths.
The pyenv manual says, “This is the only requirement for pyenv to function properly.” In context, that statement refers to setting up the shims path, not to installing a Python version or enabling every optional feature. See the manual’s advanced configuration section.

Shim directory absent: pyenv’s shim commands are not available through this PATH. Check initialization and the startup file for the failing process.

Shim directory present but after another Python directory: the earlier executable can take precedence. Correct the order in the relevant shell configuration; do not treat this as a missing-shim problem.

Shim directory present and first, but the wrong version is selected: inspect version selection inputs. Pyenv documents
PYENV_VERSIONand.python-versionfiles as inputs that can affect the selected version. The README also documentspyenv exec, which runs a command with the selected version’sbindirectory prepended to that command’s PATH.
If it works in a terminal but fails in an editor or agent
Shell startup behavior depends on the shell and how it was launched. A login shell, an interactive shell, a noninteractive shell, and a process that does not read shell startup files may not load the same configuration. Identify the actual shell and launch mode, then check which startup files it reads. The pyenv project’s current README gives setup instructions for Bash and Zsh; use the matching instructions rather than copying syntax from another shell.
Bash and Zsh
Full initialization with pyenv init - enables shell integration as well as setting up shims. The more limited pyenv init --path sets up shims without full shell integration. The project generally places full initialization in interactive shell startup and uses path setup where needed. Follow the README’s shell-specific instructions for the shell and mode that actually runs your command.
Bash startup-file ordering
The README calls out Debian-based profile ordering: .profile may prepend per-user bin directories after sourcing .bashrc, which can put competing commands ahead of pyenv’s shims. In that situation, configuring pyenv in .profile as well as .bashrc may be necessary so shim precedence is restored. The project also cautions Bash users whose BASH_ENV points to .bashrc to use its manual setup instructions, so the full eval "$(pyenv init - bash)" line is placed only in the login startup file.

Fish, Nushell, and PowerShell
These shells use different setup syntax; do not paste Bash eval commands into them. The pyenv README documents shell-specific setup, and notes that Nushell shell integration is not currently supported, although its setup can add paths.
After changing configuration, start a fresh shell or restart the current one as directed in the project documentation so the updated PATH takes effect.

Use pyenv rehash when an executable installed into a pyenv-managed environment lacks a current command shim. Rehash rebuilds shims for Python binaries known to pyenv; it is not a general PATH repair. It will not add a missing shim directory to PATH, change startup-file selection, or make a shim outrank another executable directory. The command’s purpose is described in the pyenv command reference.
If a virtual environment changes command lookup
Activating a virtual environment modifies PATH, so its executables can intercept command lookup before pyenv shims. If the behavior changes when you activate or deactivate an environment, inspect PATH in both states. The pyenv manual discusses this interaction and points users who plan to use these environments toward pyenv-virtualenv; see the manual.
If you are using Windows
The pyenv project does not officially support native Windows outside WSL. Under WSL, pyenv manages Linux Python builds, not native Windows Python builds. For native Windows Python, the project points users to the separate pyenv-win fork. Check the platform notes in the pyenv README before applying Unix shell configuration instructions.
