If PuTTY reports “Network error: Software caused connection abort”, Windows has terminated an established socket. The message is Winsock error 10053 (WSAECONNABORTED): a generic abort that can follow a transmission timeout, protocol problem, or loss of reachability. It does not identify whether PuTTY, your computer, a router or VPN, or the remote SSH server is responsible.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Start by checking reachability and the SSH service, then correlate the disconnect with network changes, idle time, or SSH-2 re-keying. A short PuTTY keepalive interval is a useful test for idle-path failures, but it cannot repair a broken route or an unavailable server.

What error 10053 means in PuTTY
Windows error 10053 is defined as: “An established connection was aborted by the software in your host computer, possibly due to a data transmission time-out or protocol error.” PuTTY’s documentation describes the same message as a generic Windows network error that kills an established connection.
“Software” in that wording does not necessarily mean PuTTY itself. The Windows networking stack can abort a socket after the path disappears, the remote endpoint stops responding, or a protocol exchange cannot complete. The failure can therefore be on any segment between your Windows computer and the SSH service.

The error is a symptom, not a root-cause diagnosis. Treat the time of the disconnect and the tests that reproduce it as your evidence.
Why an established PuTTY session is aborted
The network path became unreachable
A cable can be unplugged, Wi-Fi can roam or enter power-saving mode, a VPN can reconnect, or a firewall and router can discard the existing flow. A route change can have the same result. PuTTY’s manual lists loss of network reachability as a normal example of this error.

Once an intermediate device loses its state or the client moves to a different network, the next packet can reveal that the old path no longer works.
The remote host or SSH service stopped responding
If the server is down, rebooting, overloaded, filtering traffic, or its SSH service has stopped listening, Windows retries transmission and eventually gives up. A server-side maintenance event can therefore produce the same 10053 message as a local Wi-Fi problem.
SSH-2 re-keying exposed a latent failure
SSH-2 periodically performs a key re-exchange. PuTTY may send traffic for that operation even when you are not typing. A path that has silently degraded can fail during re-keying, making an apparently idle session disconnect at a repeatable interval.
Do not respond by weakening key-exchange or host-key security first. Use the timing of the failure to investigate packet loss, latency, and service logs, and change security settings only when you have a documented compatibility reason.

Keepalive traffic detected, or prevented, an idle failure
PuTTY users have reported that keepalives can prevent this error. A keepalive also sends traffic through a path that may already be dead, so it can be the event during which the failure is detected. That apparent contradiction is expected: keepalives are a diagnostic and mitigation mechanism, not a repair for an unavailable endpoint.
First response: collect the timing and scope
Before changing settings, record enough information to distinguish an immediate failure from an idle or re-keying failure.
- Note the exact local time and whether you were typing, transferring data, or idle.
- Record the destination name or address and SSH port.
- Check whether other applications lost connectivity at the same moment.
- Write down any Wi-Fi roam, Ethernet reconnect, VPN notification, firewall change, sleep/wake event, or router restart.
- If the failure repeats, measure the approximate interval from connection to disconnect.
A disconnect that happens immediately after connecting points toward an incorrect destination, blocked port, service failure, or authentication-stage problem. A drop only after inactivity points toward an idle path or keepalive policy. A drop at a consistent longer interval, including while you are not typing, warrants checking SSH-2 re-key timing as well.
Step 1: verify that Windows can still reach the destination
Run tests from the same Windows computer and network that runs PuTTY. Replace server.example and 22 with the actual host and SSH port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors-
Check name resolution and basic reachability:
ping server.exampleSome servers intentionally block ICMP, so a failed ping does not by itself prove that SSH is unavailable. A successful ping also does not prove that the SSH port is open.
-
Test the TCP port that PuTTY uses:
Test-NetConnection server.example -Port 22In the output, inspect
TcpTestSucceeded. A false result means Windows could not establish a TCP connection to that host and port at the time of the test. It does not reveal whether the cause is a firewall, route, server outage, or wrong port.Rank #3

If the host name may resolve differently across networks, test the server’s known address as well as its name. A name that resolves to an obsolete or unreachable address can look like a random PuTTY failure.
-
Repeat the port test after the next disconnect. If it fails at the same time as PuTTY, the problem is broader than the interactive client session.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Do not infer a healthy route from a test performed hours after the failure. The useful comparison is made while the session is failing or immediately afterward.
Step 2: confirm that the remote SSH service is listening
Use an independent channel if possible, such as the server console or a separate administrator session. Check the host’s uptime, recent reboot or maintenance activity, and the SSH daemon or service logs around the disconnect time.
On a Linux server
Use the service manager and listening-socket tools appropriate to the distribution. For systems using systemd, an administrator can inspect:
sudo systemctl status ssh
sudo journalctl -u ssh --since "15 minutes ago"
sudo ss -ltnp | grep ':22'
Some distributions name the unit sshd rather than ssh, and the configured port may not be 22. Use the server’s actual unit name and port. Look for a restart, crash, configuration error, resource exhaustion, or a deliberate shutdown at the matching time.

On Windows Server
Check the OpenSSH SSH Server service in Services or with the administrator’s preferred PowerShell service and event-log tools. Confirm that the service is running and listening on the port configured for that host. A listening service does not rule out a firewall or route problem, but a stopped service explains why new connections cannot be established.
If the server rebooted or the SSH service restarted, fix that underlying event before adjusting PuTTY. Reconnecting repeatedly while the service is down produces no useful client-side evidence.
Step 3: inspect local network changes and middleboxes
Compare the disconnect time with events on the Windows computer and the network path.
Windows and Wi-Fi checks
- Confirm that the Ethernet link is connected and that the adapter did not reset.
- Check whether Wi-Fi roamed between access points, lost signal, or resumed from power saving.
- Look for sleep, hibernate, resume, or a network-profile change.
- Temporarily test from a stable wired connection or a different trusted network. A changed result is evidence about the path, not proof that PuTTY is faulty.
VPN, firewall, and security software
- Check whether a VPN tunnel reconnected or changed its route while PuTTY was open.
- Review local firewall or endpoint-security events for a blocked, reset, or inspected SSH flow.
- Do not permanently disable security controls as a first fix. If a controlled test requires a policy change, document the time, test briefly, and restore the protection immediately.
Routers, NAT, and firewalls
Stateful devices can expire an idle flow. A later packet from PuTTY then encounters a path that no longer has matching state. Ask the network administrator for connection, VPN, NAT, and firewall logs covering the disconnect time. If only long-idle sessions fail while active sessions remain stable, an idle-state policy becomes more likely.

Use this procedure when the session survives normal activity but fails after being idle.
- Open PuTTY and select the saved session, if you use one.
- In the left category tree, open Connection.
- Find Seconds between keepalives and enter a small, nonzero interval appropriate for your environment.
- Return to Session, select the destination, and click Save if you want the setting retained for future connections.
- Reconnect and observe whether the same idle period still produces the abort.
Choose a measured interval rather than an extreme value. The objective is to keep an otherwise valid path from being treated as idle, or to expose the failure sooner for diagnosis. Keepalive success does not establish that the server, route, or middlebox is healthy; it only shows that periodic traffic changes the behavior.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: investigate SSH-2 re-key timing
If disconnects occur at a repeatable interval, especially while you are not typing, compare that interval with the session’s SSH-2 key-exchange settings.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the PuTTY session configuration and go to Connection > SSH > Kex.
- Review the configured key-re-exchange interval and record it before changing anything.
- Compare the recorded interval with the time from connection to error 10053.
- Check packet loss, latency, VPN events, firewall logs, and the remote SSH logs around the re-key attempt.
- Test with the normal security settings first. Do not disable or weaken key exchange merely to hide a transport failure.
A match in timing is a clue, not proof that re-keying is defective. Re-keying can expose a latent path problem because it sends data on a connection that appeared idle. The durable fix is to repair the path, service, or compatibility issue that prevents the exchange from completing.

Common misdiagnoses and unsafe fixes
“The word software proves PuTTY is broken”
It does not. The wording comes from Windows’ socket layer. PuTTY’s manual treats it as a generic network error and says it is generally not evidence of a PuTTY bug.
“Ping failed, so SSH is definitely down”
ICMP may be filtered even when TCP SSH works. Use a TCP port test and the server’s own service status as separate evidence.
“Keepalives fixed it, so the server is healthy”
Keepalives can alter when a dead path is noticed and can keep some idle paths active. They cannot restore a stopped daemon, a broken VPN, or an unreachable route.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“Disable re-keying or security checks”
That trades away SSH protection without demonstrating a cause. Preserve the normal key-exchange and host-key settings while you gather timing and path evidence. Only make a security change for a known, documented compatibility requirement, and understand its risk.
“Reconnect until it works”
Repeated reconnects can obscure whether the service is restarting, the route is flapping, or a policy is blocking new sessions. Capture one failed attempt, test the port, and check logs before creating a long series of indistinguishable retries.
What to do when the error keeps returning
- Build a timeline containing PuTTY’s disconnect time, port-test results, Wi-Fi or VPN events, router/firewall events, and remote-service logs.
- Classify the pattern as immediate, idle-only, or re-key-correlated.
- Change one variable at a time: test a different network, then a keepalive interval, then the relevant middlebox or server policy.
- Save the PuTTY profile only after a setting produces a repeatable improvement, and document what changed.
- Escalate with the destination, port, timestamps, test output, and server log excerpts. This lets the network or server administrator investigate the correct segment instead of treating 10053 as a complete diagnosis.
When the server is reachable, the SSH service is listening, and the route shows no transition, examine packet loss and protocol compatibility at the exact time of the abort. When the port test fails simultaneously, focus on the path or endpoint rather than PuTTY’s terminal display.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Record whether the session was active or idle and the time of failure.
- Run
Test-NetConnection <host> -Port <port>during or immediately after the failure. - Confirm the remote host’s uptime, SSH service state, listening port, and logs.
- Review Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN, firewall, NAT, and router events.
- For idle-only failures, test a small value in Connection > Seconds between keepalives and save the profile only if the result is repeatable.
- For repeatable longer-interval failures, compare the timing with Connection > SSH > Kex re-keying and investigate packet loss before changing security settings.
- Remember that error 10053 identifies an aborted socket, not the component that caused it.
