Start with the exact kick message
Do not treat every BattlEye disconnect as an anti-cheat violation. DayZ uses different messages and hexadecimal codes for service failures, timeouts, malformed or unsigned content, administrator actions, and account bans. The wording determines whether you should repair Windows, correct a server installation, replace a mod file, or contact BattlEye.

Capture the whole line and code
Take a screenshot or copy the complete BattlEye notice before reconnecting. Include punctuation, the named file, and any hexadecimal value. A partial message such as “kicked by BattlEye” removes the information needed to choose the correct fix. DayZ’s error-code reference includes categories such as ClientKicked and signature failures; a missing .bisign file can be identified explicitly rather than guessed at.
- Update failed, service installation failed, or service startup failed: follow the BattlEye service and security-software branch.
- Client not responding, query timeout, or a disconnect after joining: begin with the network and timeout branch.
- Wrong version, PBO, missing
.bisign, or a mod that is not on the server: check the game branch, files, and signed content. - A kick immediately after an administrator action: investigate the server administrator or RCon log.
- Global Ban: this is an account-enforcement matter handled by BattlEye, not a local file problem.
Use this decision table before changing anything
| Observed symptom | Likely branch | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “Update failed” or service installation/startup failure | BattlEye service, firewall, antivirus, or permissions | Allow BattlEye executables, restore unrestricted internet access, check permissions, and recreate the service directory if required. |
| “Client not responding,” query timeout, or repeated disconnect after play begins | Network path or timeout | Check connection stability, router or modem firmware, and conflicting network or security software. |
Wrong version, PBO, missing .bisign, or mod not on server |
Game branch, local files, or signed mod content | Verify Steam files, select the server’s branch, and correct mod and signature files. |
| Kick immediately after an administrator action | Server administrator or RCon | Review RCon and server logs and distinguish an administrative kick from anti-cheat detection. |
| “Global Ban” | BattlEye account enforcement | Contact BattlEye; Bohemia Interactive does not administer or revoke global bans. |
Repair the DayZ branch and local files
Version mismatches are a common source of apparently mysterious kicks. DayZ has Stable and Experimental branches, and a client on one branch may not match the server’s executable, data, or mod set. Confirm which branch the server advertises before repairing anything.

- survive against environmental dangers, including the infected, dynamic weather, and animal predators
Choose the branch that matches the server
- Close DayZ and the Steam client if it is still holding files open.
- In Steam, open the DayZ game’s properties and inspect the Betas or branch selector. Select Stable or Experimental to match the server.
- Allow Steam to finish the branch download and update. Do not launch while the update is paused or queued.
- Try the same server again. If only one server fails while other servers on the same branch work, continue with that server’s mod and configuration checks rather than repeatedly reinstalling the client.
Verify the Steam game files
Use Steam’s file-verification function for DayZ. The DayZ troubleshooting guidance recommends a file check when downloads are faulty or corrupt, and BattlEye states that the current client and server files are delivered with the game distribution. Verification replaces damaged files without requiring a full manual deletion.
- Open Steam Library, right-click DayZ, choose Properties, then Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to complete the scan and any replacement download.
- Restart Steam and DayZ, then test the server again. Record any new kick text; a changed message often indicates that the file problem is resolved and a different branch remains.
Do not copy BattlEye files from an unrelated game or download replacement DLLs from a third-party file site. BattlEye’s supported client and server files come with the game distribution and should be kept current through the normal update and verification process.

Fix BattlEye update, installation, and startup failures
BattlEye must be able to download updates before the game starts. “Update failed” therefore points first to blocked internet access, firewall or antivirus rules, or a service that cannot be installed with the required permissions.
Restore update access
- Make sure the computer has a working internet connection before launching DayZ. A browser connection alone does not prove that security software permits the BattlEye launcher.
- Check firewall and endpoint-security rules for the BattlEye launcher. Create an allow rule rather than disabling protection permanently.
- If security software quarantined a BattlEye component, restore it only if the file is the one installed by the official DayZ distribution, then add an appropriate exception.
- Temporarily disconnect from a corporate, school, or filtered network that blocks game-service traffic and test on a permitted connection.
Allow the BattlEye service executables
For service-installation or startup errors, the executable names to check are BEService.exe and, on 64-bit installations, BEService_x64.exe. Ensure that your Windows account and the security software can read and execute them. A service may fail even when the game itself starts if the executable is blocked, quarantined, or denied permission.
- Exit DayZ and Steam.
- Review the Windows security product’s blocked-item, quarantine, and controlled-folder-access history for the BattlEye executable names.
- Allow the files and their parent DayZ/BattlEye folders, then start Steam again.
- Launch DayZ once so the service can install or start. If Windows displays a permission prompt, approve it only for the official installation.
Recreate a damaged BattlEye service installation
If the service still will not install or start after permissions and exceptions are corrected, BattlEye’s troubleshooting guidance allows removing the BattlEye service directory so it can be recreated. Close the game first, remove only that service directory from the DayZ installation, and launch the game again. Steam and BattlEye should rebuild the required service files. Do not delete the entire DayZ installation as a first response, and do not remove unrelated Windows services.
Resolve “Client not responding” and timeout kicks
A “Client not responding” or query-timeout message is not automatically evidence of cheating. BattlEye explains that this condition can occur when the server’s or client’s connection times out for an extended period or breaks completely. Treat it as a connection-path problem first.

Test stability rather than just speed
- Use a wired connection or move closer to the access point for a test session.
- Stop large downloads, cloud synchronization, live-stream uploads, and other traffic that can create long latency spikes.
- Restart the router and modem, then check whether their firmware is current. BattlEye specifically identifies router or modem firmware and incompatible network software as possible factors.
- Disable or reconfigure traffic-shaping, packet-inspection, VPN, overlay, or aggressive security software one item at a time. Re-enable protection after the test and keep the setting that permits DayZ and BattlEye traffic.
- If every server disconnects at the same point, investigate the client network. If one server times out while others remain stable, provide the server operator with the timestamp and exact message.
Separate a timeout from a server outage
Ask another player whether the same server dropped everyone. A simultaneous disconnect suggests a server restart, host outage, or upstream network break rather than a local BattlEye installation. A solo timeout that repeats on several servers points toward the client’s route, firewall, or router. Keep the original message because “client not responding” and a signature error require different administrators and different repairs.
Server-owner checks: configuration, paths, and logs
If you operate the DayZ server, inspect its BattlEye configuration before asking every player to reinstall. Bohemia Interactive documents BEServer_x64.cfg beside BEServer_x64.dll. The active location can be changed with -bePath and -profiles, so a server may be reading a different directory than the one you opened in File Explorer.
Enable the logs that identify the source
Use the launch options -doLogs, -adminLog, and -netLog when diagnosing a live server. The profile directory receives the normal server logs as well as BattlEye, BEC, and RCon files. Match the player’s timestamp, character name, and exact kick text to the corresponding log entry.

- Server and BattlEye logs: show whether the server rejected content, lost a client, or recorded an anti-cheat event.
- Admin or RCon logs: show manual commands such as a kick or ban and the account that issued them.
- Network logs: help distinguish a broken connection from a content or policy rejection.
Keep the logs from the failed attempt before restarting the server. A restart can rotate or overwrite the evidence needed to identify the branch.
Check RCon and administrator actions
A kick issued by an administrator is operationally different from a BattlEye detection. DayZ’s BattlEye setup uses an RCon port that is separate from the game ports and a matching RConPassword. Commands documented by BattlEye include players, kick, ban, loadBans, and writeBans.
For server owners
- Confirm the RCon port and password in the active
BEServer_x64.cfg, not an unused copy in another profile directory. - Review the RCon or administrator log at the exact kick time.
- Check whether an operator used
kickorban, or whether a ban list was loaded withloadBans. - After an intentional ban-list change, use
writeBansto persist it according to your administration procedure.
For players
Ask the server owner whether the kick was manual and provide the exact time, your in-game name, and the full message. Do not assume a kick after a disagreement is an anti-cheat verdict. The server operator controls local kicks and bans; BattlEye handles global bans.

Fix PBO, signature, and mod kicks
When the message names a PBO, mod, version, or signature, changing firewall settings will not repair the content. The server and client must agree on the branch, mod list, file versions, and signature files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead the named file and category
- Wrong version: select the branch the server uses and verify DayZ files again.
- PBO or mod not found: confirm that the required mod is installed, enabled, and present on the server’s published mod list.
- Missing
.bisign: restore the signature file from the server’s legitimate signed mod package. DayZ’s error reference identifies a missing.bisignas a documented kick reason. - Unexpected signature: remove stale or duplicate mod copies, then install the exact version required by the server.
Server-side content checklist
- Compare the server’s enabled mod list with the collection or launch parameters supplied to players.
- Check that every server mod has its corresponding signed content and key files in the correct locations.
- Confirm that the server was updated completely and is not mixing files from Stable and Experimental.
- Restart the server after replacing content, then test with a clean client profile or a second player.
Client-side content checklist
- Unsubscribe from or remove duplicate copies of the mod named in the kick.
- Let Steam or the mod distribution system finish downloading before launching DayZ.
- Verify DayZ files after a failed or interrupted update.
- Join a server whose published mod list matches the files currently installed; do not force a different version through launch options.
Never download an isolated PBO or signature file from an untrusted source to silence a kick. A signature mismatch is a content-integrity problem, and replacing one file can create a different mismatch or introduce unsafe code.
Understand global bans
A message that says “Global Ban” is not fixed by verifying files, reinstalling BattlEye, changing routers, or asking a DayZ server owner to remove your name. Bohemia Interactive states that BattlEye administers the banning system and that Bohemia does not participate in detecting cheats or administering those bans.
What to do
- Record the exact global-ban message and the account details BattlEye requests.
- Contact BattlEye through its official support channel and follow its appeal or account-support process.
- Do not pay a third party that promises to remove the ban, and do not create replacement accounts to evade enforcement.
Bohemia cannot revoke a BattlEye global ban. The DayZ server browser can filter for servers where BattlEye is not required, but those servers have their own rules and may provide a different multiplayer environment. Using that filter does not remove or appeal the global ban.
Client or server: assign responsibility correctly
| Situation | Primary owner of the fix | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Update, installation, or startup failure on one computer | Player and the computer’s firewall, antivirus, and permissions | Full service error, BattlEye executable name, and security-software event. |
| Timeouts on many servers | Player’s network, router, modem, or security software | Times of disconnects, connection changes, and whether other servers fail. |
| Timeouts on one server only | Server operator or the route to that server | Server name, timestamp, player count, and matching network log. |
| PBO, signature, or missing-mod kick | Player and server operator together | Named file, mod version, branch, key or .bisign status, and both mod lists. |
| Kick immediately after an admin command | Server administration | RCon command history and administrator log. |
| Global Ban | BattlEye | Exact ban text and the account information requested by BattlEye support. |
A clean escalation sequence
Use this order so each test changes only one variable and preserves useful evidence:
- Save the complete kick text, code, named file, and time.
- Confirm Stable or Experimental matches the server.
- Verify DayZ files through Steam.
- For update or service errors, allow the BattlEye launcher and
BEService.exe/BEService_x64.exe, then recreate the BattlEye service directory if necessary. - For timeout wording, test a stable connection, current router or modem firmware, and security software compatibility.
- If you own the server, inspect the active
BEServer_x64.cfg, profile path, and logs with-doLogs,-adminLog, and-netLog. - For PBO or signature errors, align the branch, mod list, signed files, keys, and
.bisignfiles. - For an administrator kick, request the RCon or admin-log entry.
- For a global ban, stop local troubleshooting and contact BattlEye.
This sequence prevents a common failure mode: reinstalling the client for a server-side RCon kick, changing router settings for a missing signature, or deleting files when the account is globally banned.
