This sequence catches syntax and path errors before Monit can restart a production service incorrectly.

What Monit does and how its configuration is organized
Monit is a lightweight supervisor and monitoring daemon. It repeatedly examines processes and other system conditions, then performs an action when a declared condition is met. Depending on the rule, that action can be an alert, a restart, or a custom program.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The central control file is named monitrc. Monit searches locations in a defined order, including the invoking user’s ~/.monitrc, /etc/monitrc, and compiled or distribution-specific locations. You can select an exact file with the -c option. Package layouts differ, so check the service unit and package documentation on the target operating system before creating include directories.
A typical configuration has three layers:
- Global settings: polling frequency, logging, and optional include files.
- Service declarations: the process, file, filesystem, host, protocol, or resource to inspect.
- Actions: what Monit should do when a test succeeds or fails.
Monit’s manual describes the pre-start syntax check as a way to find errors before the first launch. Treat that check as mandatory after every edit.

Choose a package or source installation
The distribution package is the preferred choice for most servers because it supplies an integration path for the operating system’s service manager and receives updates through the normal package workflow. A source build is useful when the repository version is unsuitable or when you need a build option not provided by the distribution.
| Installation route | Typical command or method | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu package | sudo aptitude install monit |
Uses the distribution’s files, unit integration, and update mechanism. | The repository version and configuration paths depend on the release. |
| Fedora package | sudo yum install monit |
Managed by the system package tools. | Repository naming and available version vary by release; newer systems may expose the package through a different front end. |
| OpenSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, or FreeBSD package | Use the platform’s Monit package path documented by that operating system. | Fits the platform’s service and filesystem conventions. | Unit names, include directories, and defaults are not interchangeable between platforms. |
| Source build | ./configure, then make && make install |
Lets you choose the source release and build configuration. | You own installation paths, upgrades, dependency handling, and service-manager integration. |
Check the candidate package before installing
Repository metadata can contain an older or newer Monit release than the one you expect. Inspect the package candidate with your distribution’s package tool before installation. On Debian or Ubuntu, for example, use apt-cache policy monit; on a Fedora-family host, inspect the package information with the package manager available on that release. Verify that the candidate comes from the repository you intend to use and that the package’s unit and configuration paths match your operating system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install from source only when the package is unsuitable
A source installation follows the project’s documented build sequence: run ./configure, compile with make, and install with make install. Perform the build in a controlled directory and record the resulting binary and configuration locations. Because a source install may not create the distribution’s systemd unit, you must arrange startup, reload, logging, permissions, and upgrades yourself. Do not mix a source-installed binary with a package-owned unit until you have confirmed which executable and control file the unit invokes.
Locate and secure monitrc
First identify the file used by the service unit or by your chosen command line. If the file is not in the distribution’s expected location, pass it explicitly, for example sudo monit -c /etc/monitrc -t. Keeping one authoritative control file prevents an edit to a different path from appearing to have no effect.
Protect the file as if it contained credentials. Make it owned by root and readable only by the administrator or account that must read it. A common baseline is:

sudo chown root:root /etc/monitrc
sudo chmod 600 /etc/monitrc
Use the actual path selected by the package or service unit. If you use an include directory, apply the same ownership and access policy to included files that contain passwords, tokens, or command arguments.
Create a minimal global configuration
Start with a small global section and add checks incrementally:
set daemon 60
set logfile syslog
include /etc/monit/conf.d/*
set daemon 60 tells Monit to poll every 60 seconds. set logfile syslog sends messages to the system logging facility. The include path is only an example; some packages use a different directory or do not create one. Confirm the installed layout before relying on it.
If you omit the daemon setting and do not invoke the appropriate daemon-mode option, Monit can make a single pass and exit. A system service normally needs a recurring poll interval.
Validate the control file before starting Monit
Run the syntax test as root:
sudo monit -t
A successful validation reports Control file syntax OK. Do not enable or start the service until every parse error is fixed. The reported line usually points to an unmatched quote, misspelled directive, invalid path, or malformed condition. Repeat the test after each correction.

When you use a non-default file, include the same -c path in the test that the eventual service command will use:
sudo monit -c /etc/monitrc -t
Add a process check and a recovery action
A process rule normally identifies the process through its PID file and defines explicit start and stop programs. Replace the names and paths below with values from the target server:
check process myapp with pidfile /run/myapp.pid
start program = "/usr/bin/systemctl start myapp"
stop program = "/usr/bin/systemctl stop myapp"
if failed host 127.0.0.1 port 8080 protocol http
then restart
This rule combines process identity with a local HTTP readiness test. Monit should restart the service only when the declared condition reflects a real failure. A PID file that is stale, points to another process, or is written somewhere else will make the rule unreliable, so confirm the service’s actual runtime path first.
Use executable, unambiguous commands
Use absolute paths for commands whenever practical. If a start, stop, or recovery action calls a script, the script must begin with a shebang and have execute permission. Test the exact command manually as the account under which Monit will run it; a command that works only in an interactive shell may fail because of a different PATH, working directory, environment, or privilege.

Monit’s Debian documentation describes a default 30-second wait for process start and stop actions. If the service needs a different interval, set an explicit timeout with WITH TIMEOUT on the relevant program action. Match the timeout to the service’s measured startup and shutdown behavior rather than choosing a very large value that hides failures.

Make the health test represent readiness
A listening TCP port is not always proof that an application is ready to serve requests. Where appropriate, test the protocol response that clients depend on. Conversely, do not test a remote dependency as if it were local process health unless a failure of that dependency should genuinely trigger recovery. Keep each condition narrow enough that you can explain why the selected action is safe.
Understand polling, schedules, and supported checks
After each pass, Monit sleeps for the interval declared by set daemon, then checks the configured services again. A shorter interval detects failures sooner but increases command execution and log activity. A longer interval reduces overhead but delays detection. Rules can also use cycle-based scheduling such as EVERY ... CYCLES; review those qualifiers when a check appears delayed.
| Target | What Monit can evaluate | Typical reason to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Process | PID identity, process state, and related conditions | Confirm that a daemon remains present and recover it when it is not healthy. |
| File or directory | Existence and file-system conditions | Detect a missing socket, generated file, directory, or permission-related condition. |
| Filesystem | Filesystem capacity and related resource conditions | Alert before a full volume prevents a service from writing. |
| Host or network protocol | Reachability and protocol responses | Check a local or remote endpoint whose availability matters to the service. |
| System resource | Resource conditions supported by Monit | Alert or take action when a server resource exceeds a defined boundary. |
Begin with one process rule, observe its behavior, and add other target types only after the basic daemon and logging path work. This makes it easier to distinguish a Monit configuration error from a problem in the monitored service.
Choose an action that will not create a restart loop
| Action | Use it when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
alert |
The condition needs human attention but automatic recovery could cause harm. | Someone may miss the alert if notification delivery is not configured and tested. |
restart |
The service has a known, safe restart path and the failed condition reliably indicates that a restart can help. | A persistent fault can produce repeated restarts and hide the underlying cause. |
| Custom program action | Recovery requires a controlled script, handoff, or diagnostic operation. | The script may fail because of permissions, missing environment variables, or non-idempotent behavior. |
Confirm the process identity and the health condition before selecting an automatic action. Test the service’s real startup time and use sensible thresholds so a temporary delay does not become a restart storm. An alert-first policy is often safer while a new rule is being observed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Enable and start Monit with systemd
For a package that supplies a systemd unit, enable Monit for future boots and start it now:
Best Value
sudo systemctl enable monit.service
sudo systemctl start monit.service
sudo systemctl status monit.service
The documented template unit starts after network-online.target, runs Monit with monit -I, and maps reload and stop operations to monit reload and monit quit. A Debian-sourced unit follows the same general structure and installs into the normal multi-user target. Inspect the installed unit rather than assuming another distribution uses identical paths or options.
After changing the control file, validate it and ask the running daemon to reload:
sudo monit -t
sudo systemctl reload monit
sudo monit status
Reload only after the syntax test succeeds. If the daemon is not running, start it after validation and then inspect its status.
When systemd is not available
Use the init or service integration supplied by the operating system or package. The important requirements remain the same: invoke the intended Monit binary, point it at the intended monitrc, start it after the required network or filesystem prerequisites, and provide a reliable stop and reload path. Do not copy a systemd unit’s assumptions into another init system without adapting command paths and lifecycle behavior.
Inspect status, logs, and the local control interface
The Monit client can contact a running daemon. The default local control endpoint is 127.0.0.1:2812. Monit also provides a lightweight HTTP(S) status interface for viewing the server and monitored-service state. Keep that interface local unless remote access is required; if you expose it, use authentication and a firewall policy appropriate to the server.
Use both Monit’s status output and the operating system’s logs. On a systemd host, start with:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo monit status
sudo systemctl status monit.service
sudo journalctl -u monit.service
Verify that the expected services are listed, the last poll is current, and no action is being repeated unexpectedly. A green process state alone does not prove that the health test is meaningful, so exercise the monitored service deliberately in a maintenance window before relying on automatic recovery.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
monit -t reports an error
- Read the reported line and the directive immediately before it; a missing quote or brace can shift the apparent error location.
- Check spelling, capitalization, and the exact syntax of conditions and actions.
- Confirm that every referenced file, directory, PID file, and executable path exists on this host.
- Run the test with the same
-cpath and privilege that the service uses.
The service never starts
- Verify the PID file path and confirm that the service actually creates it at startup.
- Check execute permission and the shebang for every script used by a start or stop action.
- Use absolute command paths and test them manually with the expected user identity.
- Inspect the service’s own logs separately from Monit’s messages; Monit may be reporting the symptom rather than the cause.
The service restarts repeatedly
- Run the start command outside Monit and determine whether the application exits or fails its health test on its own.
- Increase the action timeout only when startup is legitimately slow; do not use it to conceal a crash.
- Change the health test so it measures the service’s actual readiness condition.
- Temporarily use an alert instead of an automatic restart while diagnosing a persistent failure.
Monit is absent after a reboot
- Check whether the unit is enabled with
systemctl is-enabled monit. - Inspect
systemctl status monitand the system journal for startup failures. - Confirm that the enabled unit invokes the same binary and control-file path you tested manually.
- For a source installation, verify that a boot-time service definition was actually created; compiling and installing the binary alone does not guarantee startup integration.
Checks appear delayed
- Review the value of
set daemon; it defines the normal polling interval. - Look for
EVERY ... CYCLESqualifiers that intentionally defer a test. - Check whether a long-running start, stop, or custom program action is occupying the expected interval.
A production-readiness checklist
- Install the distribution package unless its version or build options are unsuitable.
- Identify the exact
monitrcpath used by the service and secure its ownership and permissions. - Set a deliberate polling interval and logging destination.
- Add one service check with verified PID, start, stop, and health-test paths.
- Ensure every script has a shebang, execute permission, and no dependency on an interactive shell environment.
- Set explicit timeouts for services whose startup or shutdown differs from the default behavior.
- Run
sudo monit -tand fix every error before starting the daemon. - Enable and start the systemd unit, then inspect status and journal output.
- Reload after each validated configuration change and confirm the monitored state with
monit status. - Test failure and recovery deliberately, then keep the control interface restricted to the access policy your server requires.
This workflow keeps installation, configuration, validation, lifecycle management, and recovery decisions separate. That separation is what makes Monit useful: it can restart a failed service quickly without turning an unverified command, stale PID file, or overly broad test into an automated outage.
