Start by checking whether OBS is reporting dropped frames or rendering/encoding lag. Dropped frames point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate the route cannot sustain; rendering or encoding lag points instead to a system or GPU bottleneck. Neither counter by itself identifies the root cause, so compare OBS’s statistics and session log with YouTube’s stream-health messages before changing settings.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not prove
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote stream server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. For a YouTube stream, that remote endpoint is YouTube’s ingest server, not an OBS-operated server. As the OBS Project puts it in Stream Connection Troubleshooting: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.”

This definition identifies the kind of problem, not who caused it. The limiting point could be the VPS’s sustained upload, the route from its data center to the selected YouTube ingest, or a setting mismatch that YouTube flags. It is not evidence on its own that OVHcloud, YouTube, OBS, or a firewall is at fault.

OBS treats connection trouble and encoding performance as distinct issues. See its encoding-performance guidance before lowering stream bitrate to address an encoder bottleneck: bitrate changes do not necessarily reduce the work of rendering or encoding.

Capture a useful baseline before changing settings
Make a note of the symptoms during a representative stream and save the OBS log from that session. A before-and-after record helps distinguish a real improvement from a change in stream conditions.
- Record the dropped-frames percentage and the rendering-lag and encoding-lag indicators.
- Note the date and time, VPS data-center location and plan, OBS installation location, and whether drops are continuous or intermittent.
- Record output bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, stream protocol, and selected YouTube ingest endpoint.
- Save the session log. Include the relevant time window when sharing it with support, and remove or protect any stream key or other credentials before sharing.
The installation location matters: if OBS runs on the VPS, its outbound stream follows the VPS’s network path. If OBS runs on a local computer, the computer running OBS is the encoder and its connection is the relevant outbound path, even if other components are hosted on the VPS.
Test whether your bitrate exceeds what the path can sustain
Lower the bitrate as a controlled test
OBS recommends lowering the video bitrate and suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point. Treat that percentage as a heuristic, not a guarantee. For this problem, the useful capacity is stable throughput to the actual YouTube ingest endpoint during the affected period; a speed test to another destination, or at a different time, may not represent that route.

- Reduce the video bitrate while leaving other settings unchanged where possible.
- Stream under comparable conditions and check whether the network dropped-frames percentage changes materially.
- If it improves, the previous rate was likely too close to or above what the route could reliably sustain. Choose a rate that leaves headroom rather than returning immediately to the failing setting.
This test is diagnostic. A lower bitrate can reduce the load on the connection, but it does not establish whether the limiting segment is inside the VPS, on the route, or at the destination.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to the actual stream
Use YouTube’s Live encoder settings and bitrates for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than relying on a single generic “YouTube bitrate.” YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps; its guidance calls for CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
The following are H.264 recommended ingest rates on Google/YouTube’s encoder-settings page crawled in 2026. They are recommendations for the specified stream formats—not measurements of OVHcloud-to-YouTube throughput or guarantees that a particular VPS route can sustain them.

YouTube gives different ranges for AV1 and H.265. Check the table for the codec you are actually sending. A recommended ingest rate is a format-setting reference; the separate bitrate test above helps determine what your particular network path can sustain.
Check YouTube Live Control Room for ingest errors
During a test stream, inspect the Health Indicator in YouTube Live Control Room and compare its timestamped messages with the times OBS reports trouble. YouTube’s live stream errors can identify incorrect bitrate, format, audio or video settings, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe frequency.

- If a message identifies an encoder-setting problem, correct that setting first and retest.
- If no matching ingest-setting error appears while OBS’s network dropped-frame counter rises, continue investigating capacity and the path to the ingest endpoint.
- Use a test with representative movement and audio, then monitor stream health; a static or unusually simple test may not represent the real event.
Compare the ingest endpoint and inspect the OVHcloud route
Change one endpoint or service at a time
OBS recommends testing a different server and, where appropriate, a different service. Keep the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and other conditions as consistent as possible. If a test succeeds elsewhere, that is evidence of a destination- or path-specific difference, not proof that one provider caused the fault.
Use OVHcloud network tools as supporting evidence
OVHcloud documents several tools in its network tools guidance: Looking Glass for routes and routing tables from a data center, Proof for network speed tests, Smokeping for ICMP reachability, latency and path changes, and Weathermap for backbone link load. Compare observations by time and region with the stream symptoms.
These tools can help describe the network, but none guarantees that the precise YouTube ingest flow is healthy. A single traceroute, ICMP result, or generic speed test is not enough to establish a fault on the stream’s route.

Verify the VPS plan and the actual encoder’s network path
OVHcloud’s VPS offer page displays public bandwidth by offer and says traffic is unlimited. Check the current listing for the exact plan and market/region you use. Unlimited traffic is not unlimited instantaneous bandwidth, and a plan’s nominal public-bandwidth figure does not guarantee stable throughput to a particular YouTube ingest endpoint.

If the evidence points to a local configuration issue, inspect the VPS network and firewall configuration. The OVHcloud VPS FAQ covers bandwidth and security topics, but the existence of a firewall or a VPS plan does not by itself show that either is causing these dropped frames.

OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing, binding to the default IP, and trying IPv4-only as a reversible test. These options are not universal fixes; change one at a time, record the result, and restore the prior setting if it has no benefit. If IPv4-only makes no difference, return to the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Dynamic bitrate can lower stream quality when the connection cannot keep up and may reduce visible symptoms. OBS describes it as a workaround, not a resolution of the underlying connection issue. Use it only if fluctuating quality is preferable to dropped frames for your stream.
OBS also lists VPNs, security software, bundled network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi, and modem/router/cable/network hardware among possible causes. Check only components that are actually on the encoder’s outbound path. For OBS running entirely on the VPS, home Wi-Fi and router hardware are not that stream’s outbound link.

When to escalate, and what evidence to send
If drops continue after the bitrate test and controlled endpoint comparison, send OVHcloud support a concise incident record rather than a conclusion based on one speed test.
- Give the affected timestamps, VPS plan and region, and destination/ingest endpoint.
- Attach the OBS session log and report the bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, and OBS network and encoding/rendering indicators.
- Include repeated route, latency, and throughput observations that line up with the affected period, noting how and when each was measured.
- Describe the result of the lower-bitrate and alternate-endpoint tests, including what settings were held constant.
If OBS runs from a local computer and evidence points to its ISP or last-mile connection, OBS recommends contacting the ISP after checking relevant software and hardware. Do not label a route faulty solely from one traceroute or speed test.
