Create thumbnails from carefully chosen portfolio photographs, crop them to suit your gallery design, and serve responsive image sizes so visitors do not have to download full-resolution originals for small cards. There is no universal thumbnail width, aspect ratio, or file-size target: choose dimensions from the actual design, then inspect the results on phones and desktops.
1. Curate the photographs before making thumbnails
Start with the work you want prospective clients to see, rather than exporting every image from every shoot. Select photographs that show the photographer’s strongest work and the range of services they genuinely offer. A wedding photographer might organize real wedding projects separately; a portrait or product photographer should use categories that reflect their own work, not labels chosen only for search terms.

For a cohesive shoot, consider a project page that presents images in a useful sequence, rather than treating every photograph as an interchangeable card. A commercial India-focused web-design service recommends category galleries and individual shoot stories, but that is a design suggestion, not a technical standard or an independently verified outcome. Public portfolio work also serves a different purpose from a private client-delivery gallery: publish a considered selection, not a client’s full-resolution delivery set by default.

2. Choose the grid and crop before exporting
Decide how thumbnails will appear at the sizes visitors actually see. A consistent aspect ratio makes a grid orderly, but cropping every image to the same shape can cut off faces, hands, clothing, architecture, or other important details. Preserving each photograph’s natural orientation protects its composition, though mixed shapes can make a grid less regular.

- Use a consistent crop when a uniform grid is important and each photograph can tolerate the crop.
- Preserve natural proportions when the photograph’s framing is more important than perfectly aligned card edges.
- Set a focal point deliberately if your site crops images automatically; check that the subject remains visible in every displayed size.
Make a small test set and inspect it at the actual card size on a phone and desktop. There is no established universal pixel width, height, ratio, or file-size limit for photographer-portfolio thumbnails. Google’s image guidance recommends optimization while maintaining quality, but does not prescribe a portfolio export preset or compression setting.
3. Export responsive image renditions
Export a preview rendition from the best-quality original. If cards render at substantially different widths across devices, create multiple width variants rather than asking the browser to download a large original for a small card. Use srcset and sizes to let the browser choose among width variants; use picture when you need a format alternative or a different crop for a particular display condition. Keep a useful src fallback.
For example, the following markup offers three illustrative width variants:

<img
src="/images/jaipur-wedding-preview-800.jpg"
srcset="/images/jaipur-wedding-preview-400.jpg 400w,
/images/jaipur-wedding-preview-800.jpg 800w,
/images/jaipur-wedding-preview-1200.jpg 1200w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 50vw, 33vw"
width="800"
height="533"
alt="Bride and groom walking through a Jaipur courtyard">
The filenames, dimensions, breakpoint, sizes value, and alt text above are examples, not prescribed settings or descriptions of a real photograph. Replace them with your files and layout. Set the width and height attributes to the displayed image’s aspect ratio so the browser can reserve space before the image loads. Ensure every URL in srcset exists and that each version has the intended crop.
Google’s image guidance lists JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF among formats it discusses for images, and documents responsive image markup with a fallback. It does not establish one best format or quality value for every visitor and image pipeline. Choose a format your delivery setup supports, retain an appropriate fallback, and compare the rendered quality on your own images.
4. Give images useful filenames, alt text, and context
Use a concise filename that describes the image or project rather than a camera default such as DSC_4471.jpg. Put portfolio images near relevant text, such as a project description, location, service category, or a caption where one helps visitors understand the work.

Write alt text that conveys meaningful visual content, such as “Bride and groom walking through a Jaipur courtyard.” Do not turn it into a string of search terms. Google Search Central identifies alt text as important image metadata and notes that it also supports accessibility for people who cannot see images, including screen-reader users.

Do not lazy-load the main image or thumbnail likely to appear immediately when the page opens. Defer images below the fold, but implement loading so they appear as the visitor reaches them without requiring a click. Make sure image URLs remain available in rendered HTML, including the image’s src, so crawlers and browsers can discover the content.
Lazy loading can hide content if implemented incorrectly. Google’s guidance recommends keeping initially visible content available promptly and checking that lazy-loaded images are exposed and load without user action. The right loading behavior depends on the page layout: an image that appears in the initial viewport on a common phone may be below the fold on a wide desktop, so review both.

6. Review the finished portfolio page
- Check phone and desktop layouts. Confirm that card sizes and crops suit each layout, and that faces and focal subjects remain visible.
- Check image selection. Verify that the browser can load each offered responsive URL and that the fallback works.
- Check descriptions. Review filenames, alt text, and nearby project context for accuracy and usefulness.
- Check deferred loading. Scroll through the page and confirm below-the-fold images appear as they approach the viewport without a click.
- Check on a constrained connection. Use a slow-network emulator or similar test, and assess both image clarity and loading behavior. Do not claim a particular speed gain or performance score unless you measured that page.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of the finished portfolio page for a review or workflow, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL with one request. Its API can return an image or PDF; for a page screenshot, use a call like this. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/portfolio -o portfolio.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API, not an image-thumbnail generator: use your site’s image pipeline to create and serve the portfolio renditions described above. Common problems and fixes
- The thumbnail cuts off the subject: revise the crop or focal point for that rendition, then inspect it at the smallest card size as well as desktop size.
- The browser downloads an oversized image: inspect the rendered markup and actual selected resource; check that
srcsetwidth descriptors andsizesreflect the layout’s real rendered widths. - A responsive variant is missing: open each URL in
srcsetdirectly, fix the filename or path, and confirm the fallbacksrcstill loads. - Images jump into place after loading: supply width and height attributes that match the image’s aspect ratio, and ensure variants do not unexpectedly change that ratio.
- Below-the-fold cards stay blank: check the lazy-loading implementation and browser console, verify that the image URL is present in rendered HTML, and ensure loading does not depend on a user click.
- The initial image appears late: check whether it is being lazy-loaded even though it is visible at page open; allow that image to load promptly.
- The export looks soft or has distracting artifacts: compare the rendition against the original at its actual display size and adjust the export dimensions or encoding settings in your image workflow. No single quality number is established for all portfolio images.
Performance and cost considerations
Responsive renditions can avoid transferring an unnecessarily large source to a small display, while image optimization can reduce page weight if quality remains acceptable. The amount of any improvement depends on the files, layout, delivery setup, and visitor’s device and connection; it should be measured rather than assumed. There is no evidence-based universal byte target for this use. Keep high-resolution originals in your archival or client-delivery workflow where appropriate, and publish preview assets sized for the portfolio’s actual presentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every photograph in a portfolio have alt text?
Give meaningful photographs concise alt text that communicates their visual content. Avoid keyword lists; decorative images that add no meaningful content can be treated differently by the site’s accessibility implementation.
Is WebP always better than JPEG for photographer thumbnails?
No universal winner is established for every image and visitor. Choose formats your delivery setup supports, preserve a suitable fallback, and assess the result on your own photographs.
