Start by checking which OBS counter is rising. If it is Dropped Frames (Network), lower the streaming bitrate until it sits comfortably below repeatable upload throughput from the VPS, then test the YouTube ingest settings and monitor stream health. If the counter instead indicates rendering or encoding lag, bitrate is not the first fix. When network drops persist at a conservative bitrate, preserve logs and route measurements and ask Contabo to investigate.
First identify which OBS frames are being lost
Open OBS’s Stats window and inspect the current log. Do not treat every lag counter as the same problem: network-dropped frames point to connection stability or a bitrate the path cannot sustain; rendering lag and encoding lag point to different constraints. OBS describes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the streaming system and the remote ingest server. For a VPS stream, that means the path from the VPS to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.

If OBS instead reports rendering or encoding lag, follow the separate OBS encoding-performance guidance. It recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate and simplifying demanding scenes. On a VPS, first check its actual CPU, RAM, disk and GPU availability, and which encoder OBS is using; do not assume a desktop GPU or hardware encoder is available.

- Record the current state. Note the configured video bitrate, the exact OBS counter, the time, and whether the counter rises continuously or only during bursts. Keep the OBS log.
- Measure sustained upload from the VPS. Run repeatable throughput checks from the server to an appropriate test endpoint, preferably under conditions resembling the stream. A single speed-test peak is not a stable bitrate guarantee.
- Lower the video bitrate and repeat a comparable stream test. OBS suggests starting around 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point, not a guarantee. Leave room for variation, protocol overhead, other server traffic and route changes.
- Compare the result. If network drops slow or stop at a lower bitrate, the configured rate was likely too close to what the path could reliably carry. If they continue at a conservative rate, investigate route, ingest and provider factors rather than repeatedly guessing at settings.
Contabo says VPS and VDS port speeds range from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps, subject to fair-use conditions. That published port range does not establish the sustained end-to-end throughput or routing quality between a particular VPS and YouTube. Check the exact product and applicable account terms rather than treating the port figure as a speed test.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings to the stream
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health diagnostics and its current encoder settings guidance for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The table below gives two H.264 examples from YouTube’s current recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026; these are platform recommendations, not a claim about what a given VPS route can sustain.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
YouTube’s guidance also lists AV1 and H.265 ranges. Apply the values for the actual codec and output rather than copying an H.264 figure across encoders. YouTube recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Test with motion and audio representative of the real stream; a static test image can conceal problems that appear under a heavier video workload.

If YouTube’s recommended bitrate exceeds stable throughput from the VPS, do not force the recommended value. Lower the output bitrate or choose a lower resolution or frame rate that can fit the measured path, then confirm the result in OBS and YouTube’s stream-health view.
Isolate ingest, route and local configuration issues
If the bitrate is comfortably within repeatable throughput but network drops remain, change one variable at a time and record each test. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests diagnostic checks that may help distinguish an ingest or configuration issue from a more general network problem.

- Try a different YouTube stream server where OBS offers one, and compare results. A different service can be used only as a diagnostic comparison, not as a fix for the YouTube path.
- Set OBS’s Bind to IP to Default unless there is a specific reason to bind to another interface.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall, security tool, or network-priority/optimization software is affecting the connection. Tailor these checks to the VPS operating system; Windows-only options do not apply to a Linux VPS.
- On Windows only, OBS documents network-optimization/TCP-pacing and IPv4-only tests. Change these only when appropriate, one at a time. If changing IP family makes no difference, restore the default IPv4/IPv6 setting.
Do not expect a single toggle to repair an unstable route. OBS describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a congestion workaround, not a root-cause fix; it can reduce image quality as it responds to congestion.
Check Contabo policy, then escalate with evidence
Contabo’s published bandwidth guidance describes port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and fair-use provisions, including possible throttling for exceptionally high or disruptive usage. Its separate traffic rules, updated April 10, 2025, describe package-specific allowances and throttling after ten consecutive days above an outgoing package allowance. These are provider policies, not diagnoses of packet loss, congestion or routing to YouTube. Confirm current terms for the exact VPS product in the customer panel or with Contabo support.

If conservative settings still drop frames, open a support request with a useful timeline and measurements. Contabo’s server troubleshooting guidance asks for details including when the issue began, affected applications, resource metrics, traffic type, NIC changes, services and ports, and traceroute. Add the OBS log, exact timestamps, configured bitrate, repeat throughput measurements, and whether reducing bitrate changed the drop rate. This gives support evidence to investigate rather than an assumption that the advertised port speed guarantees a route to YouTube.
Keep sender-side drops separate from viewer buffering
OBS network-dropped frames describe the sender’s connection to ingest. Viewers buffering is a separate playback symptom: OBS notes that viewers may buffer even when the sender is not dropping frames. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide if the OBS counters are stable but viewers still report playback interruptions.
