To filter words from Streamlabs live alerts, open Streaming essentials > Alert Box, configure the profanity filter and custom bad-word list in General Settings, then save and preview the result. For messages that need context-sensitive review, use alert moderation to hold alerts for approval instead of relying only on an automatic word list.
Filter words in Streamlabs Alert Box
- Open the Alert Box: Sign in to Streamlabs and go to Streaming essentials > Alert Box. The current Streamlabs quick guide describes this route: Quick Guide: Setting up Streamlabs Alerts.
- Configure the filter: In General Settings, enable the profanity filter. Add the words or phrases you want blocked to Custom Bad Words. Streamlabs documents using its standard list, a custom list, or both; see Setting up Your Streamlabs Alerts.
- Choose what happens to a match: Streamlabs describes options to censor matching words or disable alerts containing bad words. Censoring leaves the event visible with the matched language obscured; disabling the alert can hide the entire notification, including a legitimate follow or subscription. Check the current dashboard wording because labels and available behavior can change. - Save and verify: Save your settings before leaving the page, then preview or test the alert in the dashboard. Check both a message with a term on your list and an ordinary alert to ensure the filter is not hiding more than intended.
Choose automatic filtering or manual approval

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 quick guide says its profanity filter blocks bad words from appearing in alerts and lets creators add their own words. If approval matters more than speed, enable alert moderation so alerts are held for review before display. The setup guide covers both filtering and moderation: Streamlabs Alerts setup.

Alert filters are not chat filters
A platform’s chat moderation settings and an alert overlay’s text settings control different things. YouTube Studio has a blocked-word list for live chat messages, while Twitch documents AutoMod and permitted or blocked chat terms. Those chat controls should not be assumed to change text shown by a third-party alert overlay; configure the alert provider separately.

Troubleshoot words that still appear—or alerts that disappear
- A term still appears: Confirm the profanity filter is enabled, the word or phrase is on the custom list, and the updated settings were saved. Preview the alert after changing the configuration.
- An entire notification vanishes: The selected behavior may disable alerts containing a match rather than censor only the word. Switch to censoring if you want the event itself to remain visible, if that option is available in the current UI.
- A legitimate message is caught: Review the list for short or ambiguous terms that can appear inside ordinary words or messages. Streamlabs cautions users to exercise care when banning words that could be part of a normal message.
- Chat is filtered but overlay text is not: Set up the filter in the Alert Box as well; a YouTube or Twitch chat rule does not necessarily govern third-party alert text.
- Moderated alerts do not appear immediately: Check whether alert moderation is holding them for approval and whether a moderator is available to review them.
