If Narrator scan mode seems to freeze in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, first check whether scan mode is actually off or Narrator focus is inside a text-entry field. Microsoft documents both behaviors, but its reviewed support pages do not confirm a known issue, root cause, or specific fix for this exact freeze. The steps below separate expected scan-mode behavior from a browser that has stopped responding, then show how to report a persistent problem.
Check whether scan mode is off or focus is in an edit field
Scan mode turns on automatically in Edge and lets you move through webpages and apps with the arrow keys, as well as use shortcuts to read or jump between page elements. Microsoft describes its purpose and navigation behavior in its scan-mode instructions.

Scan mode is toggled with Narrator+Spacebar. By default, either Caps Lock or Insert serves as the Narrator key, so the shortcut is Caps Lock+Spacebar or Insert+Spacebar unless you changed the Narrator key setting. Press the combination and listen for Narrator’s mode announcement. This checks whether the mode was simply turned off; it does not prove that a deeper freeze has been fixed. Scan mode also turns off automatically when focus enters an edit field. If you are in a text-entry box, press Up or Down to leave it and resume scan navigation. If scan mode was turned off for an app, Microsoft says it stays off for that app until you turn it on again.

Distinguish a scan-mode problem from an unresponsive browser
Notice what stops responding and where. If Narrator still speaks but arrow-key navigation behaves differently only in a text field, the documented edit-field behavior may explain it. If Narrator announces the mode change when you toggle it, that is useful evidence that the toggle is working. If Edge itself stops responding, or the problem happens across ordinary page navigation, treat it as a broader browser issue rather than assuming the scan-mode toggle will resolve it.
- Only in an edit field: press Up or Down to move out of the field and test scan navigation again.
- Scan mode may be off: toggle it with Narrator+Spacebar and listen for the announcement.
- Edge is unresponsive: use Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting guidance; it is not a confirmed Narrator-specific fix.
Update and restart Edge
Microsoft’s accessibility instructions describe checking Edge for updates from the keyboard. The route is Help and feedback > About Microsoft Edge. Check whether an update is offered, install it if available, and restart Edge if prompted. Microsoft recommends updating and restarting as general browser troubleshooting, but does not identify these steps as a proven cure for Narrator scan-mode freezing.

If Edge itself is unresponsive, Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting tips also discuss investigating extensions. If you try that route, change one thing at a time and check whether the behavior changes so you can identify which change mattered.

If the freeze continues, you can send feedback from Narrator with Narrator+Alt+F, use Edge’s feedback route, or contact the Microsoft Disability Answer Desk for assistive-technology help. When reporting the problem, include details that help someone reproduce it:

- The page or control where it happens, and whether it occurs only in an edit field or during normal navigation.
- What you pressed immediately before the freeze and the steps that reproduce it, if known.
- Whether toggling scan mode or updating and restarting Edge changed the behavior.
What Microsoft has—and has not—confirmed
Microsoft’s documentation explains normal scan-mode behavior and its general browser troubleshooting options. Its reviewed official sources do not establish that the exact Windows 11, Narrator, and Edge freeze described here is a currently acknowledged issue; they also do not identify a root cause or provide a specific workaround for it.
Microsoft’s list of fixed Narrator issues includes other Narrator and scan-mode problems, but that does not establish that this symptom is the same bug or that a listed fix applies. Avoid treating an unrelated fix as a diagnosis for this freeze.
