Seattle Times Journalists Picket for AI Job Protections in Contract Talks

Seattle Times Union members picketed outside the newspaper’s offices on Sept. 30, 2026, seeking contract language to prevent AI from replacing newsroom jobs. The union says management accepted limits requiring human interviewing and story writing but did not extend equivalent protections to copy editing, photography, design, graphics and digital production. The dispute also includes wages; the company says it remains committed to negotiating mutually acceptable language on AI.

What the union wants protected

The central disagreement is about the scope of any AI safeguard. The union says management agreed that interviews and story writing would remain human work, but that its proposal did not provide the same protection across other parts of producing journalism.

Those roles include copy editors, photographers, designers, graphics staff and digital production workers. The union’s concern is that a clause covering only reporting and writing could leave other union newsroom work exposed to replacement or automation.

In a Sept. 4 statement, the union said it had proposed a guarantee against AI replacing newsroom union jobs for the life of the next contract, which it described as likely three years. That is the union’s account of its proposal; the full contract language and management proposal were not available in the cited coverage.

What each side has said

The union’s position

The union has framed the issue as job security across the newsroom, not simply whether AI may assist with drafting stories. At the picket, Seattle Times journalist Alexandra Yoon-Hendricks said, “Management has admitted at the bargaining table that it could use AI to replace jobs.”

The union also says it has sought transparency and regular labor-management discussion about AI. Those are union proposals, not confirmed terms of an agreed contract.

Seattle Times Union said it represented more than 160 newspaper employees in its Sept. 4 statement. GeekWire reported that a public petition urging the company not to replace newsroom workers with AI had received more than 1,600 signatures; that figure is the petition count reported by GeekWire, not the number of people at the picket.

The company’s position

Seattle Times Co. President and CEO Alan Fisco told GeekWire that the company understood the Guild’s concerns about AI’s workplace development and potential impact on journalism, and remained committed to negotiating “mutually acceptable contract language regarding AI use at The Seattle Times.” GeekWire also reported the union’s account that management had accepted human-only interviewing and writing, while protections for other production work remained disputed.

The available statement does not spell out the company’s full proposal or say that the sides have agreed on a broader no-replacement guarantee.

Why copy editing is part of the dispute

AI use in a newsroom can affect work beyond creating a first draft. Copy editors review accuracy, clarity and consistency; photographers, designers, graphics journalists and digital producers shape how reporting is presented and delivered. A restriction limited to interviewing and writing would not, by itself, settle what happens to those other tasks or the jobs attached to them.

GeekWire quoted Seattle Times data journalist Manuel Villa expressing concern about copy editors: “There is nothing to say that they wouldn’t be completely replaced,” he said, while adding that he trusted human copy editors to make his work better more than he trusted an AI agent. His comments describe a worker’s concern, not evidence that AI has already replaced Seattle Times employees.

How the talks reached the picket

  • May 12 session; union update published May 14: The union said management had countered on AI, accepting human-only interviewing and writing while leaving other production functions outside those guarantees. The union also said management had not yet submitted a wage counterproposal at that stage.
  • Aug. 27: The union’s updates index listed a bargaining update titled “We’re hitting a wall.” The listing alone does not establish the details of that update.
  • Sept. 4: The union said it had proposed protection against AI replacing newsroom union jobs for the next contract, which it described as likely three years.
  • Sept. 29–30: GeekWire reported that the union was awaiting the company’s response after a bargaining session on Sept. 29. Union members held a lunchtime picket outside the newspaper’s offices the next day.
  • Oct. 13: GeekWire reported this as the scheduled date of the next bargaining session. The cited coverage does not establish what happened at that session or afterward.

Wages are a separate part of the negotiations

The AI dispute is not the only point of contention. In its May update, the union said management had not yet provided a wage counterproposal. GeekWire later characterized negotiations as stalled over wages and AI, a description attributable to its report rather than an agreed assessment by both sides.

The bargaining account available here does not establish the eventual wage proposals or whether wage and AI language were negotiated together or resolved separately.

What is—and is not—established

The dispute is about proposed contract protections against possible AI-driven job replacement. The cited reporting does not establish that AI has already replaced Seattle Times newsroom jobs, that a broader no-replacement clause was accepted, or that negotiations produced a final agreement.

GeekWire also mentioned a McClatchy contract covering five other newspapers in Washington and Idaho. That is a separate contract and should not be treated as the agreement under negotiation at The Seattle Times.
