Opera for Android now includes a travel eSIM option: eligible users can claim 3GB of data free for three days, usable across Opera’s listed travel destinations. The free offer is limited to selected home markets, however, and “worldwide” does not mean every user gets free data everywhere. The eSIM is data-only, works across the phone’s apps, and requires an unlocked Android phone with eSIM support.
What Opera’s free eSIM offer includes
Opera announced the feature on September 29, 2026, for Opera for Android. At launch, eligible users in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Poland could claim 3GB of data valid for three days. Opera says the eSIM can be purchased worldwide for supported destinations, but that paid availability is separate from eligibility for the free allowance. Opera’s announcement and its feature guide describe the launch terms.

The eSIM supplies mobile data to the device, not just to Opera’s browser. That means compatible apps such as maps, messaging, and rideshare services can use it too. It does not provide a local phone number or replace the number on a traveler’s regular SIM.
Where the eSIM works
Opera’s September 29 guide listed service in 47 destinations. Availability can change, so check the current destination list in Opera before buying or traveling.

Will Opera’s eSIM work on your phone?
Opera says users need the latest Opera for Android, Android 10 or newer, an eSIM-capable phone, and a device that is unlocked for use with another carrier. The feature is not available in Opera Mini or Opera GX mobile. If a phone is carrier-locked or lacks eSIM hardware, updating the browser will not make it compatible.

How to install and activate it
- Update or install Opera for Android and connect to a stable internet connection before departure.
- Open Opera’s profile menu and select eSIM.
- Choose the destination and the free or paid plan shown as available to you.
- Follow the phone’s prompts to install the eSIM while the stable connection is available.
- When you arrive, select the eSIM for mobile data. Opera says the plan activates when it first connects to a network in the destination country. To avoid unexpected roaming charges, turn off data roaming on your regular SIM.
Opera’s setup guide provides these steps. Since activation occurs on the destination network, installing the eSIM before travel does not itself start the destination plan’s active period.
Free data, paid plans, and validity
The free offer is 3GB for three days, where available. For users who need more data or are not eligible for the free offer, Opera lists paid 3GB, 5GB, and 10GB plans. Prices depend on destination and package; check the in-app price before purchase. Opera says paid plans are valid for 30 days after activation or until the data is used, whichever comes first. It also says the installed eSIM can be topped up for another destination, so travelers do not need to install a new eSIM at every stop. Opera’s setup guide explains the activation-based validity. The announcement also describes a one-year validity window for a purchased plan; confirm the current in-app terms if you intend to hold an unused purchase before activating it.

Opera says local 5G is available only where the local network supports it. An eSIM plan does not guarantee 5G coverage in every destination.
How to judge the paid-plan price claim
Opera says its paid plans average around 33% less than six major eSIM providers, based on a comparison of 5GB, 30-day US plans with prices recorded on August 24, 2026. That is Opera’s own comparison, not an independent or destination-wide price finding; the price you see for another country or package may differ. Opera’s feature guide gives the comparison basis.

What the feature does—and does not—change
Opera’s eSIM is useful as a way to arrange travel data within its Android browser and then use that connection throughout the phone. It is not a replacement for a voice-and-text mobile plan, and it does not guarantee that the service is free for every Opera user or every destination. Opera’s launch materials establish what Opera offers; they do not establish that Chrome should copy the feature or provide a like-for-like Chrome comparison.
