Fix FFmpeg YouTube Stream Interruptions Caused by a Full Disk or Log File

A full disk or FFmpeg report can disrupt a YouTube stream, but “no data” is not proof. Find the failing path, preserve logs, and check ingest health.

A full disk or rapidly growing FFmpeg report file can stop local writes and may disrupt a YouTube stream—but a YouTube “no data” warning alone does not prove storage is the cause. Check the actual filesystems FFmpeg uses, preserve the final error evidence, restore writable space if needed, then compare local timestamps with YouTube’s Live Control Room health messages before restarting or changing network settings.

First, determine which part of the stream failed

An FFmpeg-to-YouTube setup can fail at several distinct layers: local storage or logging, the input, outbound network publishing, or YouTube ingest/configuration. A local recording or report can fill a filesystem even while the publishing output is otherwise healthy; conversely, a publishing failure can occur with ample disk space. Diagnose the failing path rather than treating every interruption as a disk problem.

Layer Useful evidence What it suggests
Local storage or logging Free bytes and inodes, failed local writes, final stderr lines, and the report/log destination A host-side storage cause is more likely when the affected filesystem and path are identified.
FFmpeg input Input protocol errors and protocol-specific reconnect messages Investigate the source input. FFmpeg reconnect options apply to supported protocol cases; they do not free disk space.
Network or publishing output Output write errors, outbound connectivity, and network health If local paths remain healthy, test the outbound connection and publishing path.
YouTube ingest or configuration Timestamped Live Control Room health messages about format, codec, container, keyframes/GOP, or insufficient incoming data Investigate ingest and encoder configuration as a separate branch.

YouTube recommends checking the encoder, a local archive where available, and the outbound connection. Match its timestamped health messages against FFmpeg’s local output rather than relying on the channel’s “no data” symptom alone.

Collect evidence before changing or restarting anything

  1. Record the invocation and result. Note the FFmpeg version, the full command with stream keys and other credentials removed, the process exit status, and the untruncated final stderr lines. Never share a YouTube stream key or credentials in a log or command.
  2. Identify the paths the running process actually uses. Check the input or local archive, output recordings, working and temporary directories, and the log or report destination. Do not assume that the current shell directory is the relevant location.
  3. Check each relevant filesystem. Inspect available bytes and, on systems that expose them, available inodes for every filesystem containing those paths. The exact command depends on the operating system and deployment; a directory’s apparent size does not establish that its filesystem has writable capacity.
  4. Look for the specific failed operation. Determine whether FFmpeg tried to write a local file, whether log/report output failed, or whether only the network publishing output failed. Correlate the final stderr lines with the affected path and the interruption time.
  5. Compare timestamps with YouTube. Review the corresponding Live Control Room health messages for ingest, format, codec, container, keyframe/GOP, or incoming-data warnings.

How FFmpeg logging can contribute to a full disk

FFmpeg normally writes diagnostics to stderr. Its -loglevel option controls verbosity. The -report option writes the command line and log output to a report file and implies debug-level logging, so a report can become part of the storage problem. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation or the help and documentation for the installed version for exact behavior.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

If the evidence shows that a log or report is consuming capacity, save the useful tail and relevant timestamps first. Then stop unnecessary debug reporting, choose only the verbosity needed for operation, and set bounded retention or rotation using the host’s normal logging tools. FFmpeg documents logging destinations and verbosity; it does not prescribe one rotation method that fits every operating system or deployment.

If a process still has a deleted log file open, removing its directory entry may not immediately reclaim the storage. Consider that explanation only when the operating system’s process and file-handle evidence supports it; the appropriate way to release the handle depends on the host.

  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Restore storage safely before restarting

  1. Preserve useful evidence. Copy or capture the relevant stderr tail, report timestamps, exit status, and the identified path without exposing credentials.
  2. Free capacity on the filesystem that is actually full. Remove or move only files you can safely discard, or expand storage if appropriate for the host. Clearing space on a different filesystem will not fix the failing path.
  3. Confirm the target can be written. Check that the intended output, working, temporary, and logging paths exist as needed and are writable by the account running FFmpeg.
  4. Leave operational headroom. There is no universal free-space threshold for every workload. Account for the local recordings, reports, and temporary files your own command creates, and monitor those paths so they do not silently consume the remaining capacity.
  5. Restart deliberately. After storage is writable again, restart FFmpeg if it exited or cannot continue. Do not assume that restarting, or adding reconnect flags, resumes a publishing session that has already failed; verify the new process and YouTube ingest health.

If storage is healthy, follow the other failure branches

Input errors

Check the input-specific error and the protocol in use. FFmpeg’s reconnect options have protocol-specific scope, including support for reconnecting certain inputs. They are not a remedy for a full filesystem, and they do not guarantee that a failed YouTube publishing output can resume. Use the FFmpeg protocol documentation to confirm which options apply to the protocol in your command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbound publishing errors

If local paths are healthy but the publishing output reports a write or connection error, investigate outbound connectivity and network health. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking the outbound connection alongside the encoder and local archive.

YouTube ingest or encoder configuration

Use the timestamped Live Control Room message to identify whether YouTube reports insufficient incoming data or a format, codec, container, or keyframe/GOP issue. Treat those as ingest/configuration checks rather than evidence of a full disk. Confirm the settings against YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance and the FFmpeg command actually running.

What reconnect options and -nostdin can—and cannot—do

Reconnect options address particular protocol behaviors; they do not create storage capacity, and they do not guarantee recovery of an already-failed YouTube publishing session. Similarly, -nostdin is useful when FFmpeg runs as a background task and should not read terminal input. It does not affect disk capacity or logging. FFmpeg explains this terminal-handling use in its FAQ.
