Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For OBS users, ReaPlugs is a sensible free place to start: OBS lists it among the plugins used while developing and testing VST support, and Cockos offers it as a free package. That is compatibility evidence, not a claim that it sounds best or that every plugin in the package works on every current system. Before installing anything, check the host and plugin format: OBS’s VST filter supports many VST 2.x plugins, not VST 3.x, and OBS warns that some plugins can crash or use substantial CPU.
What makes a VST plugin a good fit for live streaming?
The right choice depends on the audio problem and the host application. A plugin that is useful in a recording workstation may not load in a streaming app, and a noise reducer is not a substitute for EQ or compression. For OBS Studio, start with format compatibility, then match the effect to the task and test stability before using it on a public stream.

- Host and format: OBS documents support for many VST 2.x plugins. Its filter does not support VST 1.x or VST 3.x, MIDI control or input, or shell VST plugins. See the OBS VST 2.x Plugin Filter documentation.
- Processing task: Choose an effect for the specific need—such as EQ, compression, gating, or noise reduction. Verify the current documentation for the plugin you choose rather than assuming a package includes a particular effect.
- Stability and CPU: OBS says it has not tested every plugin and cautions that some may crash. It also recommends monitoring CPU use.
- Platform and architecture: Confirm the plugin build suits your operating system and the host’s architecture. A plugin that installs successfully may still not appear in OBS.
There is no controlled latency, sound-quality, or CPU comparison here, so these are practical choices rather than an objective performance ranking.

ReaPlugs: a free VST 2.x starting point
ReaPlugs is a free package of REAPER FX plugins that Cockos makes available for use in another host. OBS names ReaPlugs among the plugins used in developing and testing its VST support, which makes it a reasonable first package to investigate for OBS—not a guarantee that every included effect or build will work on your system. Cockos lists VST v2.36 32-bit and 64-bit downloads dated January 2, 2016, so check operating-system and host compatibility before relying on it. Details and downloads are on the Cockos ReaPlugs page.

Melda Production: another name in OBS’s compatibility notes
OBS also names Melda Production among the plugins used during development and testing of its VST support. That does not establish that every plugin in its collection is supported, suitable for your processing need, or equally reliable. Check the individual plugin’s format and system requirements against the OBS limitations above.
OBS Noise Suppression: try the built-in option for mild noise
If the issue is mild room or computer noise rather than a need for a particular VST effect, OBS’s built-in Noise Suppression filter may be enough. Its documentation describes RNNoise as higher quality but more CPU-intensive than Speex; strong Speex suppression can distort the voice. Try the least aggressive setting that addresses the noise, then listen for voice artifacts. See OBS Noise Suppression Filter documentation.

NVIDIA Broadcast: a separate optional workflow
NVIDIA Broadcast is not a requirement for using VST plugins. The NVIDIA setup guide dated September 17, 2020 describes selecting its virtual microphone in a streaming application and warns against applying duplicate noise removal. That guide lists a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher, plus Windows 10 64-bit, among its requirements. Those details are from a 2020 guide, not verified current minimums; check NVIDIA’s current requirements before choosing this path. See NVIDIA Broadcast App: Setup Guide.
How to add a VST plugin in OBS
- Install a compatible plugin build. Confirm it is VST 2.x and is built for your operating system and host architecture. OBS documents Windows
.dll, macOS.vst, and Linux.soor.ofiles. - Check where OBS searches. OBS publishes default VST search locations for Windows, macOS, and Linux in its VST filter documentation. If the plugin does not appear, consult that page and the plugin’s installation notes. On Linux, setting
VST_PATHreplaces OBS’s other search locations, so include any paths you still need. - Open the source’s audio filters. In OBS, select the relevant audio source in the Audio Mixer, open its filter controls, and add a VST 2.x plugin filter. Choose the installed plugin from the filter’s plugin selector.
- Configure one effect at a time. Make a small change, monitor the source, and listen to a recording or private stream. This helps you identify voice distortion or other unwanted changes and makes it easier to return to a working configuration.
- Check stability and CPU load before going live. OBS warns that a plugin can crash. Save or record your working settings before experimenting, and watch CPU use while testing with your usual scene and audio sources.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The plugin is missing from OBS’s selector | Unsupported format, wrong architecture, or installation outside a searched location | Confirm it is VST 2.x, check the correct operating-system build and OBS search paths, and consult the plugin’s installation notes. Remember that Linux VST_PATH replaces other OBS search locations. |
| OBS becomes unstable after adding a filter | The plugin may not work reliably with that host or system | Remove or disable the filter, reopen OBS, and test again without it. OBS cautions that it has not tested every plugin and some may crash. |
| The voice sounds thin, watery, or distorted | Noise suppression may be too strong or duplicated by more than one processor | Reduce suppression or bypass one processor and compare. OBS warns that strong Speex suppression can distort voices; the NVIDIA guide warns against duplicate noise removal. |
| CPU use rises during streaming | The selected plugin or processing mode may be demanding | Monitor CPU in a realistic test, simplify or remove processing you do not need, and compare the built-in Speex option with RNNoise if you are using OBS Noise Suppression. |
Keep VST effects separate from keeping a stream online
VST plugins process audio; they do not keep a live broadcast running after a local computer shuts down. If your aim is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded videos stream at their original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, then start the free day.
