Start by matching timestamped FFmpeg logs with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The interruption may come from the source, audio mapping or timing, video encoding, output connection, network route, or YouTube ingest; the host being in India does not by itself identify the cause. Test with representative audio and motion, isolate which layer fails, and change one variable at a time.
First identify what stops—and when
Before changing the command, run a representative test and record the exact time of every interruption. Preserve FFmpeg’s timestamped output and compare it with stream-health notices in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live, using the kind of audio and motion expected, and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube’s live encoder settings).

- Audio and video stop together: Check for a source disconnect, FFmpeg process or resource failure, muxer/output write error, network loss, or ingest rejection.
- Only audio cuts out: Check whether the audio source is still available, which stream the command maps with
-map, and the sample rate, channel layout, and encoded audio output. - Only video freezes or drops frames: Check capture cadence, encoder throughput, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Both continue but drift out of sync: Investigate timestamp behavior and whether the audio and video sources use clocks that stay aligned.
These are diagnostic branches, not a diagnosis of your particular stream. The exact command, FFmpeg version, source type, error log, ISP, and symptom pattern determine which branch applies.

Read the FFmpeg failure at the interruption time
Look at the log lines immediately before and after the cut. Distinguish a local input-read or capture-device error from an audio-device failure, non-monotonic timestamps, encoder overload, or failed RTMP write. A message naming one layer is more useful than treating every visible freeze as a bitrate problem.

Compare the matching YouTube stream-health notice
A Control Room warning about dropped frames or insufficient bitrate points toward a different investigation than a local input error or failed output write. Keep the timestamps and messages together; a stream that looks interrupted to a viewer may have failed before it reached YouTube, during upload, or at ingest.
Check encoder settings against the connection
YouTube’s guidance is to choose a quality that is reliable for the internet connection and to test upload bitrate. Its listed live ingest protocols are RTMP and RTMPS, with RTMPS recommended. The encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds (YouTube live encoder settings).

For H.264, YouTube’s current settings table gives these minimum and recommended bitrates:

These are YouTube ingest-setting recommendations, not a guarantee that a connection with the same speed will sustain a stream. Measure stable upload throughput from the actual host while testing and leave headroom rather than relying on a peak speed-test result. For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and recommends 128 kbps.

If the test points to capacity or encoding load, reduce one variable—such as resolution or bitrate—then compare both the FFmpeg log and Control Room health. A lower video bitrate will not fix an audio-routing failure, bad timestamps, or a source that stops producing frames.
Check the input, mapping, and timestamps
Because the source type is unspecified, there is no safe universal FFmpeg command or set of input flags to prescribe. A file, camera or capture device, RTSP feed, and other live source can fail in different ways. Check that the intended audio and video inputs remain readable, and that the command maps the streams you expect. For example, inspect the command’s -map arguments rather than assuming FFmpeg selected the desired audio track.

- If only one source disappears, test that input independently and check its device or upstream feed at the recorded failure time.
- If audio and video continue but lose sync, examine timestamp-related log messages and whether their source clocks remain aligned.
- If video stalls under load, compare the input’s frame cadence with encoder throughput before changing audio settings.
Keep the original command and make controlled changes. Changing input selection, timing, encoder load, and network settings all at once makes it difficult to tell which change helped.

FFmpeg documents RTMP as a streaming multimedia protocol over TCP/IP and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and says it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers. Check that the configured endpoint and stream key are the ones for the intended YouTube broadcast, then capture the exact output error if the write fails.

Do not copy HTTP reconnect options into an RTMP publishing command as though they automatically restore a YouTube output. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed options belong to its HTTP protocol documentation, not a general promise of RTMP recovery (FFmpeg protocol documentation; FFmpeg HTTP protocol options). FFmpeg also documents an optional TCP keepalive setting for detecting dead peers; keepalive is not application-level reconnect and does not guarantee seamless recovery.
Test any proposed recovery design separately against the installed FFmpeg version and selected protocol. Do not assume a retry flag or muxer option will repair an input failure, keep a stream key valid, or recover every network interruption.
Measure the route from the Indian host
India is context to measure, not an explanation on its own. The host may be on a particular ISP, data-center route, or mobile or wireless connection, but location alone cannot establish packet loss, congestion, or an ingest problem. Measure upload stability from the machine that runs FFmpeg at the time interruptions occur, and compare a controlled alternate route or wired connection if available. YouTube’s published encoder guidance is general; it does not establish India-specific interruption rates.
