If your Pixel speaker became muffled, harsh, or crackly immediately after you changed an audio option, undo that change first. Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound, switch Adaptive Sound off, restart the phone, and test several songs or videos. Adaptive Sound processes the Pixel’s built-in speaker output; it does not change the sound from headphones or external speakers. If every source is still distorted after the checks below, contact Pixel support rather than jumping straight to a factory reset.
Start with the setting most likely to have changed the sound
Adaptive Sound is an output-processing feature, not a master-volume control. Google describes it as adjusting speaker output to fit your environment without changing volume. Because it acts on the phone’s own speaker, a change can be obvious when you play music or video aloud and completely absent through Bluetooth or wired headphones.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Sound & vibration.
- Tap Adaptive Sound.
- Turn the switch off.
- Play a familiar song or video through the Pixel speaker and compare it with how it sounded before the problem began.
- Restart the phone, then test again. A restart clears a temporary audio-process or routing state that a settings change can leave behind.
If disabling Adaptive Sound restores normal speaker audio, leave it off while you decide whether the processing suits your room and listening habits. If there is no difference, turn your attention to routing, an individual app or file, a blocked opening, or a hardware fault.

The location, scope, and timing of distortion tell you which branch to follow. Do not assume that a bad-sounding song proves the phone’s speaker is damaged.

| What you hear | Most useful interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only the built-in speaker sounds wrong, especially after a setting change | Speaker processing, an obstruction, or the speaker path is implicated | Disable Adaptive Sound, restart, then inspect the speaker opening |
| One song, video, recording, or app is distorted | The file or app may be the problem rather than the phone | Play different content in two or three other apps |
| Every source is distorted through the speaker | A phone-wide software, connection, or hardware issue is more likely | Run the full connection and physical checks, then contact Pixel support |
| Only Bluetooth audio is affected | The wireless route or connected accessory is involved | Turn Bluetooth off, test the phone speaker, then reconnect or try another accessory |
| Only wired headphones are affected | The headphones, USB-C connection, or adapter path may be at fault | Unplug them and test the speaker; try a different pair |
| Calls sound bad but music is normal | The call route, network connection, microphone, or earpiece path needs isolation | Toggle speakerphone, test another call, and switch Wi-Fi on or off |
| The issue appeared gradually rather than after a setting change | Debris, wear, moisture, an accessory, or a developing hardware fault is possible | Remove coverings and gently clean openings before seeking support |
Run the complete troubleshooting sequence
1. Reverse the most recent audio or accessibility change
Return the last control you changed to its previous value, not merely to a setting that seems reasonable. Start with Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound. If you changed another sound, hearing, or accessibility control at the same time, reverse that control as well and test after each change. Testing one variable at a time prevents two changes from hiding each other’s effect.
Compare the same content at the same approximate volume. A speaker can sound harsh when driven near its limit, while a low-volume comparison may conceal the difference. Adaptive Sound should be evaluated with the phone speaker; it does not process headphones or an external speaker.
2. Restart and cross-test several sources
Restart the Pixel after reversing the setting. Then play two or three known-good songs or videos from different apps. Include content you have heard before so that you are comparing the phone, not an unfamiliar recording.

- If one file is distorted while other files are clear, the recording may be damaged. Google Pixel Help specifically notes that some distorted sounds can come from broken sound files.
- If one app is affected, force your diagnosis to remain app-specific: test another app, another file in the same app, and, if available, the same content from a different source.
- If every app and every file is distorted through the speaker, continue with routing and physical checks and prepare to contact Pixel support.
Do not use a factory reset to prove that one recording is bad. A reset removes data while doing nothing for a damaged file.
3. Check where the audio is being routed
Unexpected routing can make a phone appear muffled when the sound is actually coming from a different output.
- Turn Bluetooth off temporarily in Quick Settings or Settings, then play the same content through the Pixel speaker.
- Raise and lower the volume once. This confirms that the volume control responds and helps reveal a route that is already near its limit.
- For a call, toggle Speaker on and off. If one mode is clear and the other is distorted, you have isolated the call path rather than general media playback.
- If calls are involved, switch Wi-Fi on or off and place another test call. This can expose a connection or call-routing problem that music playback will not reproduce.
After the speaker test, reconnect one accessory at a time. If distortion returns only when a particular Bluetooth device is connected, troubleshoot that device or its connection instead of changing Pixel speaker settings.

4. Remove anything covering the openings
Cases, screen protectors, dust, lint, and debris can muffle or rattle sound. Remove the case and any protector that could overlap a speaker, earpiece, microphone, or port. Inspect the openings under good light. A screen protector can affect the earpiece even when the bottom speaker is clear.

5. Clean gently and safely
Google recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for the speakers, microphones, and USB-C port. Wipe the exterior and the surface around each opening without pushing material inside.

- Power the phone down or disconnect accessories before cleaning.
- Use a clean, dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
- Do not insert a pin, brush bristle, paper corner, or other object into a grille or port.
- Do not pour liquid into an opening or assume that a cleaning cloth can repair internal speaker damage.
After cleaning, replay the same test content. Improvement after removing a case or surface debris points to an obstruction; it does not establish that the internal speaker is permanently repaired.
6. Isolate headphones and adapters
Unplug wired headphones or disconnect Bluetooth headphones and listen through the phone alone. Then try another pair if one is available. This comparison separates an accessory or connector fault from the Pixel’s speaker output.
- Clear speaker audio but distorted headphone audio indicates the headphones, adapter, plug, or wireless connection.
- Distortion with two different headphone pairs but clear speaker audio still points to the headphone path; contact the accessory maker or Pixel support if the connector is involved.
- Distortion from both the speaker and multiple headphones is more consistent with a phone-wide software or hardware issue.
Made for Google and Made by Google headphones are certified to work with Pixel phones, but certification does not make every accessory immune to damage. Trying another pair is a diagnostic comparison, not a requirement to buy new headphones.

Use calls and media to separate the failure paths
When music and video are clear but calls are muffled
Place a second call and test the earpiece and speakerphone separately. A clear speakerphone with a muffled earpiece suggests an earpiece opening or call-audio path; a clear earpiece with a distorted speakerphone points in the opposite direction. Toggle Wi-Fi for the test so that a network route is not mistaken for a speaker fault. If the other person hears you poorly, inspect the microphones as well as the listening speaker.
When Bluetooth is the only problem
Turn Bluetooth off and verify that the Pixel speaker is normal. Reconnect the accessory and check whether the distortion follows it. If possible, test the Pixel with another Bluetooth speaker or headphones. A problem that follows one accessory is not evidence that Adaptive Sound damaged the phone; Adaptive Sound does not apply to external speakers or headphones.
When a single app sounds wrong
Play a different file in that app, then play the same type of content in another app. If only one recording is affected, use a fresh copy or report the file to its provider. If every item in one app is affected while other apps are clear, restart that app and check its own audio or accessibility controls. Keep the Pixel’s system settings unchanged while testing so you can identify the app-specific cause.

What the results mean
- Adaptive Sound off fixes the built-in speaker: the processing setting was the trigger for your listening environment. You can leave it off and continue using ordinary volume controls.
- A restart fixes the issue temporarily: note when it returns and which route is active. Repeated recurrence warrants Pixel support, especially if it affects every source.
- Removing a case or cleaning changes the sound: keep the opening unobstructed and monitor it. Do not probe deeper into the grille.
- Only one source remains distorted: treat that source as a file or app problem until another independent source reproduces it.
- Every source remains distorted after all checks: stop repeating settings toggles and contact Pixel support. Persistent, phone-wide distortion needs an expert diagnosis.
When to contact Pixel support
Contact Pixel support when all sounds remain distorted after you have disabled the recent setting, restarted, tested several apps and files, checked Bluetooth and call routing, removed coverings, cleaned the openings gently, and isolated headphones. Tell support exactly where the distortion occurs, whether it affects calls, the built-in speaker, Bluetooth, or wired headphones, and whether it began immediately after a setting change. That pattern is more useful than simply reporting that the phone “sounds bad.”
Google’s documented guidance distinguishes between broken individual sound files and distortion affecting all sounds: the former calls for testing other content, while the latter warrants Pixel support. Support can determine whether software servicing, an accessory issue, or hardware repair is appropriate for your model and region.
Factory reset is an advanced last resort
A factory reset erases personal data and is not the opening fix for muffled audio. Google lists it as advanced troubleshooting. Use it only after ordinary checks and support guidance, and back up anything you cannot replace before proceeding.
Quick Recap
- Do not reset when only one file or app is distorted.
- Do not reset to compensate for a blocked grille or a faulty headphone.
- Ask support whether a reset is appropriate for your Pixel and the symptoms you documented.
- After a reset, test the speaker before restoring every app and accessory so a problematic app or route does not immediately reintroduce the symptom.
A quick decision path
- Did the problem start right after an audio-setting change? Turn off Adaptive Sound, reverse any other recent audio or accessibility change, restart, and retest the built-in speaker.
- Is only one file or app affected? Test other files and apps. Treat an isolated failure as source-specific.
- Does the phone speaker work with Bluetooth off? If yes, investigate the Bluetooth accessory or route.
- Does removing a case or gently cleaning improve it? Keep openings clear and avoid inserting anything into them.
- Do different headphones change the result? Use the comparison to isolate the accessory or connector path.
- Is every source still distorted? Contact Pixel support. Consider a factory reset only as an advanced step after backup and guidance.
Preventing a misleading diagnosis
- Use the same familiar test track or video when comparing settings.
- Change one control at a time and write down the original value.
- Test the built-in speaker separately from Bluetooth and wired audio.
- Keep cases and protectors clear of speakers, microphones, and the USB-C port.
- Never push debris into an opening while trying to make it louder.
- Record whether the issue is limited to calls, one app, one file, one accessory, or every source before contacting support.
