Fix Common Rules Conflicts When Switching to the 2024 D&D Edition

For a 2024 Dungeons & Dragons game, use the 2024 Player’s Handbook whenever an option appears in both books. The 2014 version remains available only for material that the 2024 handbook does not replace, including a short list of named subclasses, species, and feats. Converting a character therefore means checking each element—background, species, class, subclass, feat, spell, equipment, and multiclassing rule—rather than applying one blanket “5.5e” conversion.

This guide gives a table-ready process for resolving disagreements, updating an existing 2014 character, and avoiding the most common mistakes with renamed actions, ability scores, spell slots, digital character sheets, and printed-book errata. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is the practical reference to keep beside the character sheet during the migration.

Which rules win when 2014 and 2024 text disagree?

Declare the campaign’s ruleset first. In a 2024 campaign, the 2024 Player’s Handbook controls any rule or option that it contains. This replacement applies to the 2014 handbook’s classes, subclasses, spells, feats, equipment, species, and backgrounds. A 2014 entry is not an alternate wording that a player may choose whenever it is stronger; it has been superseded for that game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important qualification is absence. If an option does not appear in the 2024 handbook, it can remain usable from 2014 when it is one of the explicitly retained exceptions. The named exceptions are the Knowledge, Nature, and Tempest cleric Domains; the Schools of Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation; the Half-Elf and Half-Orc species; and the Dungeon Delver, Linguist, and Martial Adept feats.

Material from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything or Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything follows the same test. If a subclass, spell, or feat from either book appears in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, use the 2024 text. If it does not, do not silently rewrite it; check whether the option is covered by an explicit compatibility ruling or your Dungeon Master’s campaign decision.

Situation Table ruling
The option appears in both the 2014 and 2024 books Use the 2024 wording, numbers, prerequisites, and definitions.
The option appears only in 2014 Use it only when it is a named retained exception or the DM has approved it as campaign content.
The option appears in a supplement and in the 2024 handbook The 2024 version replaces the supplement version for a 2024 game.
The books seem to disagree because a term was renamed Check the 2024 glossary and the 2024 definition before treating the change as cosmetic.
A printed rule differs from the current official wording Apply the latest official errata, then resolve any remaining interpretation at the table.

Community labels such as “5.5e” are informal. They are useful shorthand in conversation but are not an official edition name and do not determine which text wins.

Set a campaign policy before changing a character

A short policy prevents arguments during play. Write down that the campaign uses the 2024 Player’s Handbook as its controlling rules, identify any 2014 exceptions you are allowing, and state whether other supplements are permitted when no 2024 replacement exists. Give every player the same policy before characters are finalized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a copy of the 2024 Player’s Handbook and the current official errata available. When a player cites a 2014 feature, ask three questions in order:

  1. Is there a 2024 entry with the same name or function?
  2. If so, what does the complete 2024 entry say, including its prerequisite, timing, and glossary terms?
  3. If not, is the 2014 option one of the named exceptions or an option the DM has separately approved?

This procedure handles a mixed party without forcing every character to be rebuilt from scratch. It also stops a single favorable sentence from an older book being combined with the stronger parts of its 2024 replacement.

Convert an existing 2014 character step by step

1. Inventory every source

Make a list of the character’s species, background, classes, subclasses, feats, spells, equipment, and any features taken from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, or another supplement. Record the book and version beside each item. This matters because a digital character sheet can display an old option even when a similarly named 2024 option also exists.

2. Replace the background’s ability-score method

A 2014 background does not carry ability-score adjustments under the 2024 method. Keep the background’s story and proficiencies when they are otherwise allowed, then assign the 2024 ability increases: +2 to one ability and +1 to another, or +1 to three different abilities. No ability can exceed 20 from this assignment.

Choose an Origin feat if the background does not grant one. Use an Origin feat that is legal for the campaign and apply the complete 2024 text. Do not add a 2014 racial increase on top of these background increases; the 2024 method deliberately moves those starting increases to the background.

3. Remove 2014 species ability-score increases

Ignore ability-score increases printed in a 2014 species entry when converting to the 2024 method. Apply the increases selected through the background instead. This is the most common source of accidental double-counting: adding a 2014 species bonus, a 2024 background bonus, and then another conversion bonus produces an illegal starting score.

The 2024 handbook also presents new species, including Aasimar, Goliath, and Orc. A player may choose one of those when the campaign allows it, but that is a character rebuild choice rather than an automatic change to an existing 2014 species.

4. Check the class and subclass separately

All twelve classes have revised class features in the 2024 handbook. Compare the character’s class level by level and use the 2024 feature whenever that class is present in the new book. Then check the subclass independently. A subclass that appears in both books uses its 2024 version, even if the character originally selected the 2014 version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the subclass is absent from the 2024 handbook, consult the retained-option policy. The explicitly listed cleric Domains and Schools of Magic remain 2014 options; do not generalize that exception to every absent subclass from another source without the DM’s approval.

5. Update feats and origin choices

Compare every feat against the 2024 feat list. The 2024 handbook documents 75 feats, including new and revised entries. When a feat exists in both books, use the 2024 prerequisites, action, uses, and wording. Dungeon Delver, Linguist, and Martial Adept are named 2014 exceptions when they do not have a 2024 replacement in the campaign’s reference.

6. Replace spells that have a 2024 entry

For each prepared or known spell, check whether the 2024 handbook contains it. If it does, copy the complete 2024 spell entry rather than combining a 2014 duration, range, or damage line with a 2024 casting procedure. The 2024 handbook contains 391 spells, including 30 new spells, so many spell lists have a direct replacement or a newly available choice.

7. Resolve multiclass spell slots with the correct version

Mixed-version multiclassing is not solved by averaging the two books. Use the spell-slot calculation tied to the version of the class selected, and consult that class’s own multiclassing section. In practice, identify which class entry supplies the multiclass rule you are applying, follow that version’s calculation, and document the result on the character sheet. Ask the DM to make the ruling explicit when a character combines a 2014 class with a 2024 class.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Recheck equipment and class-linked options

Equipment is part of the replacement rule, so use a 2024 equipment entry when one exists. Recheck armor, weapons, spellcasting implements, and any feature that refers to an item by name. A weapon or armor proficiency may now be described through the 2024 terminology of Armor Training, and weapon-related class features may interact with the new weapon mastery properties.

Retained 2014 options: the narrow exception list

The following options are specifically identified as remaining usable from 2014 when they do not appear in the 2024 handbook:

Category 2014 options that remain available
Cleric Domains Knowledge, Nature, and Tempest
Schools of Magic Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation
Species Half-Elf and Half-Orc
Feats Dungeon Delver, Linguist, and Martial Adept

These are exceptions to the replacement rule, not permission to preserve every 2014 entry. If a player wants another older subclass, feat, spell, or species, the DM can allow it as a house campaign choice, but label that decision clearly so it is not confused with the official compatibility treatment.

Renamed actions and resources: what changed and what did not

Several familiar labels were changed in the 2024 rules. Treat the mapping as a pointer to the new text, not as proof that the mechanics are identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
2014 label 2024 label How to use it
Cast a Spell Magic Read the 2024 Magic action and the spell’s 2024 casting requirements.
Use an Object Utilize Use the 2024 Utilize action when an item interaction is disputed.
Race Species Use the 2024 species entry and its traits; do not import 2014 ability-score increases.
Inspiration Heroic Inspiration Use the 2024 resource name and its current procedure.
Ki Monk’s Focus Use the 2024 monk feature and resource rules.
Armor proficiency Armor Training Check the 2024 armor-training wording wherever a feature refers to proficiency.

At the table, announce both names once when teaching a returning player—for example, “Magic, formerly Cast a Spell”—then use the 2024 term consistently. If an old feature says that it triggers when a character takes an action, look up the 2024 action definition before deciding whether the trigger still works.

Glossary entries that can change a ruling

Do not import a 2014 interpretation automatically when one of these terms appears in a feature, spell, or monster ability. Open the 2024 glossary entry and read the whole definition, including timing and exceptions:

This check is especially important for reactions, conditions, hiding, grappling, and effects that begin at the same time. A feature may retain its familiar name while relying on a new glossary definition, so a sentence copied from a 2014 discussion may no longer describe the 2024 procedure.

Why the transition can affect balance and action economy

The change is more than editorial. The 2024 handbook revises class features across all twelve classes, adds six backgrounds, introduces species such as Aasimar, Goliath, and Orc, documents eight weapon mastery properties, and reorganizes feats and spells. A converted character can therefore gain or lose options even when its level and ability scores stay the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check action economy whenever a feature changes its action type, grants a new reaction, modifies an unarmed strike, or interacts with weapon mastery. Check resource economy when a renamed resource such as Monk’s Focus replaces Ki, and check concentration, duration, targeting, and area wording on revised spells. Do not assume that a 2014 damage calculation or combo still works because the character’s basic class level is unchanged.

For a party that mixes converted characters and newly created 2024 characters, use one version of each shared rule. Allowing one character to use a 2014 grapple interpretation while another uses the 2024 glossary creates a rules advantage based only on which book a player opened.

Printed books, errata, and digital references

Use the current errata with a printed handbook

Keep the official errata available alongside the printed book. Version 1.0 corrects Goliath’s Powerful Build, the Grappler, Poisoner, and Telekinetic feats, shield wording, several spells—including Conjure Elemental, Conjure Fey, Conjure Minor Elementals, Polymorph, Shapechange, and True Polymorph—plus stat blocks, grappling, and Hide.

When a player finds a discrepancy, record the page and printing, check whether errata version 1.0 addresses it, and use the corrected wording for the campaign. If the errata does not answer the question, the Dungeon Master makes the table ruling. Sage Advice can offer an interpretation, but it does not override the DM’s call.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the source label on D&D Beyond

D&D Beyond’s compatibility guidance says owners of the 2014 material retain their options. Current character sheets are not silently converted into 2024 mechanics; they may be relabeled or renamed. Open the source label on an entry before assuming that a digital feature is the 2024 replacement. If two entries exist, select the one that matches the campaign policy and verify its text in the 2024 handbook.

Digital convenience does not remove the precedence check. A search result that surfaces a 2014 spell first is not evidence that the 2014 spell controls a 2024 campaign.

Worked conflict examples

A 2014 background with racial bonuses

A character keeps the narrative of a 2014 background but converts under 2024 rules. The player assigns +2 and +1, or three +1 increases, through the background, observes the 20-point maximum, and chooses an Origin feat if needed. The character’s 2014 species ability-score increase is not added.

A Half-Orc using an older entry

Half-Orc is one of the named retained species. It can remain a 2014 choice when the 2024 handbook does not provide the replacement being used by the campaign. The player still follows the campaign’s 2024 background ability-score method rather than adding the old species increase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A spell from Tasha’s Cauldron

If the spell is printed in the 2024 handbook, copy that 2024 spell entry onto the character sheet. If it is absent, it does not automatically become a 2024 spell; keep it only under the campaign’s approved supplement policy.

A feat with two versions

When the same feat appears in 2014 and 2024, use the 2024 prerequisites and benefits. Do not take a 2014 prerequisite with a 2024 benefit, or vice versa. Dungeon Delver, Linguist, and Martial Adept are the specifically named 2014 feat exceptions.

A multiclass character with conflicting slot totals

List the version of each class, open the relevant multiclassing section, and apply the slot calculation tied to the selected class version. Write the decision in the campaign notes so the same calculation is used after every level-up.

A DM’s troubleshooting checklist

  • Two entries have the same name: use the 2024 entry in a 2024 campaign.
  • No 2024 entry exists: check the explicit exception list, then ask whether the DM is allowing additional legacy content.
  • A player cites an old online ruling: compare it with the 2024 glossary and current errata before applying it.
  • The digital sheet looks different: inspect the source label; relabeling does not necessarily mean a mechanical conversion.
  • A printed page disagrees with the errata: use the errata wording and note the correction in the campaign reference.
  • A multiclass slot calculation is unclear: identify the class version whose multiclassing section applies and obtain a recorded DM ruling.
  • A conversion creates an unexpectedly high ability score: remove the 2014 species increase and recalculate from the 2024 background only.

The official guidance summarizes the philosophy well: “In D&D, rules are a tool to support and inspire play—not restrict it.” That principle does not erase the precedence rules, but it gives the DM room to make a clear, consistent exception when a group values a legacy option.

Final migration workflow

  1. Declare the 2024 Player’s Handbook as the controlling rules source.
  2. List every character option and its source book.
  3. Replace any option that appears in the 2024 handbook.
  4. Apply 2024 background ability increases and an Origin feat where required.
  5. Remove 2014 species ability-score increases.
  6. Use the 2024 class, subclass, feat, spell, equipment, action, and glossary text wherever available.
  7. Retain only the named 2014 exceptions unless the DM explicitly approves another legacy option.
  8. Resolve mixed-version multiclass spell slots from the applicable class version’s multiclassing section.
  9. Check printed wording against official errata version 1.0.
  10. Record unusual decisions in the campaign notes and use the same ruling for every character.

Following this order turns a potentially adversarial edition change into an auditable checklist. Players keep the parts of a 2014 character that the new rules still recognize, while every shared rule at the table has one current definition.
