If Windows says “No cameras are attached” or shows error 0xA00F4244, first determine whether the camera is missing from Windows entirely or only unavailable in one app. Then check physical controls, camera permissions, Windows detection and the driver—in that order. The error identifies a detection problem; it does not, by itself, prove the camera is broken. Microsoft labels 0xA00F4244 “Camera not detected” and calls its dedicated error article “NoCamerasAreAttached” (Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide; error-code article).
First, find out whether Windows or one app cannot see the camera
Open Start, type Camera, and launch the Windows Camera app. If it shows a live preview, Windows can access the camera; the problem is more likely the other app’s camera selection or permission. If Camera also reports that no camera is attached, continue with the system-wide checks below.

Note any error code. Code 0xA00F4244 is associated with camera detection, but it does not identify the cause. A camera absent throughout Windows and a camera unavailable only in a browser or meeting app need different fixes.

Check the camera’s connection and physical controls
For an external webcam
- Unplug the webcam and reconnect it securely.
- Try a different USB port. If you are using a hub or dock, connect the camera directly to the computer if possible.
- If available, test the webcam on another device. This can help distinguish a camera problem from a problem with the original computer.
For a built-in camera
- Look for a sliding privacy shutter over the lens.
- Check for a physical camera switch or a dedicated camera key on the laptop.
- Some laptops use a function-key combination; check the key markings and device instructions, and try the camera key with Fn if appropriate.
Microsoft recommends checking connections and camera controls as early troubleshooting steps (camera troubleshooting guide).

Allow Windows and the affected app to use the camera
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Make sure camera access for the device and access for apps are on, then check the permission for the app you are trying to use. Microsoft Store apps may appear individually in the app list.
Browsers and many conferencing programs are desktop apps. Their access is controlled separately by Let desktop apps access your camera; they may not appear in the Microsoft Store app list. Turn that setting on if the affected program is a desktop app. If a camera-access control is greyed out or marked as managed, an administrator may control it. On a work or school device, ask IT rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Windows 10 has different Settings labels and paths. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting page covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11, while its camera-management page is specific to Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it should not be treated as having the same ongoing support status as Windows 11 (Microsoft camera troubleshooting; Microsoft camera-permission guidance).

If the camera works in Windows Camera but not another app
Open the affected browser, meeting app or other program and check which camera it has selected. If more than one camera is available, choose the one you intend to use. Recheck that app’s camera permission and restart it after changing settings.

Close other applications that may already be using the camera, then try again. For certain camera errors limited to specific apps, Microsoft also recommends checking whether security software is blocking camera access (Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guide).
Check whether Windows detects or has disabled the camera
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- If you find the camera, check whether it is disabled. If so, enable it.
- If the camera is not listed, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Check camera settings in Windows 11
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras. This page can list connected and disabled cameras. Enabling a disabled camera from this page requires administrator access. Some infrared, DirectShow, proprietary or network cameras may not appear there, so an empty list alone does not establish that a camera is faulty (Microsoft’s Windows 11 camera settings guidance).

Update, reinstall or roll back the camera driver
If Windows lists the camera but it still does not work, Microsoft recommends updating or reinstalling its driver. If the problem began after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver if that option is available. For persistent problems, use the driver and support information from the computer or camera manufacturer.
Some external USB webcams that support UVC can use Windows’ built-in USB Video Device driver. Microsoft describes switching to that driver as a possible remedy, not a universal fix: it may not support manufacturer-specific features. Follow the applicable Microsoft or manufacturer instructions before changing drivers (Microsoft’s driver troubleshooting guidance; Microsoft’s error-code article).

When to contact support
If the camera remains absent after checking connections and physical controls, permissions, Device Manager and the driver, contact the computer or camera maker. If the camera also fails to appear on another device, that is useful information to share with support. Consider replacing an external webcam only when these checks suggest the camera itself has failed—not just because one app cannot access it.
