You can lower the cost of an App Store subscription by comparing its full price and terms, sharing it if Family Sharing is available, or cancelling when you no longer need it. But Apple’s monthly-payment option with a 12-month commitment is not a normal monthly plan: cancelling early stops future renewal, not the payments you still owe.
First, distinguish annual billing from a 12-month commitment
An annual subscription generally charges for a year at once. Apple also offers a different arrangement for select third-party services: a monthly subscription with a 12-month commitment. You pay monthly, but commit to the full 12 months. The service provider may offer a more affordable rate than a subscription without a commitment; Apple does not promise a particular discount or make the option available for every app. Compare the offer shown for your own account rather than assuming an annual plan or discount exists.

Cancellation does not remove the remaining payment obligation. Apple states: “Canceling before your commitment ends doesn’t end your payment commitment.” You continue to be billed for the remaining payments and retain access for the rest of the commitment. Cancelling prevents automatic renewal when the commitment ends; to avoid renewal, Apple says to cancel at least one day before the renewal date. The cancellation control therefore does not work like an immediate exit from a month-to-month subscription.

What if you upgrade?
If the service offers an upgrade to a higher tier during the commitment, Apple says the plan changes immediately, a prorated refund is issued for unused time in the current billing period, and the commitment terms adjust to the new plan. This guidance concerns an available higher-tier upgrade; it does not establish how downgrades work or apply to every service.
How to compare plans before subscribing
Use the subscription screen for the specific app and account. Compare the total you would pay over 12 months, not just the monthly amount, and check what each tier includes. A lower monthly figure may still require a full year of payments.

- Total cost: Calculate 12 months of payments and compare it with any annual price shown.
- Billing and commitment: Note whether the price is charged monthly or annually and whether a 12-month commitment applies.
- Features: Check that the cheaper plan includes the features you actually need.
- Renewal and cancellation: Record the renewal date and the deadline for cancelling without another term.
- Sharing: Check whether the subscription can be shared with family members.
- Availability: Confirm that the offer applies to your country, service, and account.
There is no universal annual App Store discount or app-specific price established here. The live offer and its terms are what matter.

Other ways to reduce what you pay
Share an eligible subscription with Family Sharing
Some App Store subscriptions can be shared through Family Sharing, but eligibility is set by the subscription. Check whether Share with Family appears for that subscription in account settings. If it does not, the subscription is not eligible. Compare the household’s total cost and identify which account is billed rather than assuming every family member’s app subscription can be shared. Cancel subscriptions you no longer use
On iPhone, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, select the subscription, then tap Cancel Subscription. If you cannot find it, check the receipt to see which Apple Account was used. If there is no Apple receipt, another company may be billing you; check your payment statement and contact the relevant provider. Apple’s cancellation instructions cover these cases.
Read price-increase notices
Apple says it notifies subscribers before a price increase. Depending on the increase, local law, and Apple’s stated conditions, a change may proceed without interrupting service or may require you to opt in. If you do not accept an increase that requires opt-in, the subscription will not renew. Apple’s regional guidance describes thresholds of approximately USD $5 and 50% for non-annual subscriptions, or USD $50 and 50% for annual subscriptions, subject to conditions and local law; eligible changes may be made no more than once per year. These are Apple’s policy thresholds, not universal rules for every country or subscription. Treat Apple Account balance as a payment method, not a discount
An Apple Gift Card may add funds to your Apple Account balance, which can pay for App Store subscriptions in supported regions. Some subscriptions may not accept the balance, and some purchases may still require another valid payment method. A gift card does not by itself reduce the subscription price; it saves money only if you have verified a legitimate offer that lowers what you pay for the card. Check a charge and request a refund if appropriate
Review your purchase history to identify an App Store charge. If you believe a purchase qualifies, you can request a refund through Apple’s process, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Apple provides instructions for checking purchases and requesting a refund.
