If the entire screen looks soft, check that the affected monitor is using its recommended resolution in Settings > System > Display. These fixes address different problems: fit changes how the image is placed, while resolution changes how Windows displays the screen.
Choose a wallpaper fit that matches the symptom
Right-click the desktop and select Personalize, or open Settings > Personalization > Background. Under the background settings, choose Picture and select Browse if you need to pick an image. Then try the fit option that best matches what you see. Microsoft documents these options in its Windows desktop background instructions.

| Span | Spreads the background across multiple displays. | You want one background to extend across a multi-monitor setup. |
If the wallpaper looks stretched, switch away from Stretch and try Fit or Fill. A difference between the image’s proportions and the screen can cause cropping or bars; stretching may instead distort the picture.

If text, icons, and other content also seem blurry—not just the wallpaper—check the display resolution. Open Settings > System > Display, select the affected monitor, and review Scale & layout > Display resolution. Choose the option marked Recommended. Microsoft notes that a resolution below the display’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the screen appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. If Windows changes the resolution unexpectedly, check for a graphics-driver update through Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Microsoft’s guidance identifies a driver update as something to check in that situation; it does not mean every blurry wallpaper is a driver problem.
Fix wallpaper that changed after connecting an external monitor
If the background became too small, too large, or cut off after connecting an external display, Windows may be handling different resolutions on the built-in and external screens. Microsoft documents this specific wallpaper-fit issue and workaround in its external-display support article.

- Temporarily select a resolution different from that monitor’s current resolution.
- When Windows asks whether to keep the display setting, choose Revert. If you do not make a choice, Windows reverts automatically.
This workaround is for the documented external-monitor symptom; it is not a general remedy for every blurry or pixelated background.
When the wallpaper image itself is pixelated
If the display and fit settings look right but the image still has visible blockiness, check the image file and try a higher-detail version that is appropriate for the display. Windows can change how an image is sized or positioned, but those settings cannot restore detail that is missing from the source file. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish a minimum wallpaper pixel count, so there is no single threshold to apply to every screen.
