A constant offset, a steadily growing offset and a sudden jump are different symptoms, but none identifies the cause on its own.
First, identify what kind of sync problem you have
Write down when the stream starts, when you first notice the mismatch, and the approximate offset at each check. If it is safe to do so, repeat the observation after a restart. Keep the same test clip or recognizable speech-and-picture event in view each time.

- Constant offset: audio is early or late by roughly the same amount throughout the observation. Record the size and direction of the offset.
- Gradually increasing offset: the mismatch grows over time. Measure the drift rate by noting the offset at more than one elapsed time.
- Sudden jump: sync changes abruptly at a particular point. Note the time and check for a corresponding interruption, reconnect, or processing change in available logs.
These patterns help narrow where to investigate; they do not prove whether capture, encoding, transport or playback is responsible.

Measure playback drift without disrupting the lecture
When possible, use a test copy or a separate receiver rather than changing the live output while viewers are watching. FFmpeg’s ffplay documentation describes the -stats display, which includes audio/video synchronization drift. For example, open a test stream with ffplay -stats and observe whether the displayed drift changes during playback.

ffplay also documents synchronization clock and frame-drop controls. Its documentation explains that “The master clock is used to control audio-video synchronization.” That describes ffplay’s own clock behavior; it is not a universal diagnosis of every player or streaming pipeline. A drift reading confirms what the test player observes, not which upstream component caused it.
Compare the source, encoded stream and received playback
Use the same identifiable moment—a spoken phrase, clap, slide transition or other clear event—to compare as many points as your workflow permits. A local recording can help, but compare like with like: a recording made before encoding cannot establish what happened later in the ingest or delivery path.
| Where sync is checked | What the comparison can suggest | What to inspect next |
|---|---|---|
| Source or capture and local recording | If the offset is already changing here, investigate capture timing and the encoding path. | Source device, audio format, OBS processing and encoder output. |
| Encoded output and a distributed copy | If the encoded output appears stable but a received copy drifts, investigate ingest, transport, any downstream transcoding, and the player. | Ingest and receiver logs, transport configuration, and another player or endpoint. |
| One receiver compared with another | If only one receiver shows the change, investigate that playback path as well as the shared stream. | Player behavior, device load and the timing information available for that receiver. |
These are localization clues, not proof that one stage is always at fault. The particular cause cannot be determined without the stream, configuration and relevant logs.

Inspect OBS timestamps, audio processing and frame behavior
Check packet timing
Where the tools in your workflow expose them, inspect the audio and video packets’ presentation timestamps (PTS), decode timestamps (DTS) and timebase. OBS’s encoder API reference documents these packet fields. OBS’s backend design documentation describes output as encoded audio and video packets interleaved in monotonic timestamp order. Look for whether timing remains coherent and ordered over the run; do not infer drift from one timestamp in isolation.
Verify the audio format at each stage
Compare the source’s sample rate and channel layout with OBS’s configured audio backend and the output settings. OBS documents that it can remix or resample audio when the sample rate or channel count differs from the backend configuration, and that audio processing runs on a dedicated thread. Automatic conversion is not necessarily a fault, but it means the signal may not be passing through unchanged. OBS’s backend design documentation and audio/video formats guide explain the relevant processing and format compatibility considerations.
Use load and frame counters as context
Check CPU or encoder load and any dropped or duplicated frame counters alongside the sync measurements. OBS documents that its video queue can duplicate a frame when the queue is full, while audio/video packet output is separately interleaved by timestamp. A dropped or duplicated frame may be useful context, but it does not by itself explain gradual audio drift. Confirm the actual output behavior.

Check the transport that the stream actually uses
Settings are path-specific. Confirm whether the stream is sent by SRT, WHIP/WebRTC or RTMP, and follow the ingest service’s requirements for that path rather than borrowing settings from a different protocol.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSRT
For an SRT path, measure round-trip time between the encoder and ingest server, then compare it with the configured SRT latency. OBS Project’s SRT streaming guide lists a 120 ms default latency and recommends setting latency to at least 2.5 times that encoder-to-ingest round-trip time. This is SRT guidance, not a general audio-sync setting. After a change, measure end-to-end drift again.
WHIP/WebRTC
Check the destination’s supported OBS version, audio and video encoders, and frame rate. OBS’s WHIP streaming guide, dated 2025-01-14, describes its WHIP/WebRTC broadcast workflow. As one service-specific example—not a universal preset—Cloudflare’s WebRTC guide describes an OBS configuration using OBS 31.0 or later, Opus audio and 30 fps video. Use the requirements for your actual destination.

RTMP
For RTMP, use the ingest requirements of the destination and inspect the encoded result. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP and includes publishing and playback examples. That protocol description alone does not identify the cause of sync drift.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change settings in a controlled way
- Save the current configuration. Record relevant audio format, encoder, frame-rate and transport values before changing them.
- Choose one change tied to the evidence. For example, investigate an observed format mismatch or adjust the latency of an SRT path using its measured round-trip time. Do not change unrelated settings together.
- Repeat the same measurement. Use the same observation points and record elapsed time and offset so the drift rate can be compared.
- Observe for an appropriate operating period. A single improved session does not establish a durable fix for a 24/7 stream. Validate over a period that is meaningful for the lecture’s operating schedule.
- Keep a rollback path. If the output becomes less stable or viewers are affected, restore the recorded values and continue diagnosis on a test copy or alternate receiver where possible.
Common troubleshooting outcomes
- ffplay reports changing drift, and a local or encoded copy shows the same trend: focus on capture timing, audio format and processing, encoder packet timestamps, and load. Compare audio and video evidence instead of assuming a specific encoder setting is to blame.
- The encoded output appears stable, but the delivered stream drifts: compare ingest and receiver behavior, check the actual transport configuration, and look for evidence of downstream transcoding or playback differences.
- Only one player or device appears out of sync: compare another receiver and check the affected player path. A single receiver’s display is not enough to establish that the source stream itself is drifting.
- The mismatch changes suddenly around a reconnect or interruption: note the event time and compare available logs and timestamps before and after it. Avoid treating a sudden jump as the same fault as gradual drift.
- A latency change seems to help briefly: repeat the measurement over a longer run and at the same pipeline points. Buffering can affect transport behavior, but it is not a universal sync repair.
Keep the lecture’s rights and stream continuity in view
Sync troubleshooting does not establish that the lecture recording or any music, video or other material in it is cleared for a public live broadcast. Check that you have the rights needed for the material and that your use complies with YouTube’s current rules, including any requirements relevant to reused material. No particular copyright or reused-content outcome can be inferred from an audio-sync symptom.
For an incident record, retain the start time, observed offsets, test player, stream path, relevant settings, change history and timestamps or logs you were able to inspect. If those checks do not localize the problem, the next useful details are the source and capture setup, OBS version and settings, audio format, encoder, transport, ingest destination, player, and a representative log or stream sample.
