It is meant to let someone type with one hand or even one finger while moving the hand less—but Google has not reported tests showing that it improves speed, accuracy, or comfort. The device is not planned for sale.
How Google’s rolling-belt keyboard works
Instead of reaching across stationary keys, the typist waits for a key to arrive on a moving belt and taps it as it passes. Google says each belt carries 29 keys and supports direct entry of both uppercase and lowercase letters. Its design pitch is captured in the team’s line: “The keyboard should move instead.”

Google Japan announced the concept on October 1, 2026, choosing the date as a reference to the 101-key keyboard. The company describes it as the 15th installment in its keyboard proposal series. The announcement presents reduced hand movement and one-handed or one-finger typing as goals, not as measured outcomes.
What the design may trade for less reaching
Moving keys could reduce the need to reach across a keyboard, but it also makes timing and visual tracking part of typing: the user must watch for the desired key and tap it as it passes. A contemporaneous design article describes an upright desk form and this trade-off, but neither that observation nor Google’s announcement establishes how the keyboard performs in use.

Google reports no typing-speed benchmark, error rate, accessibility evaluation, or comfort study. There is therefore no evidence in the announcement that the concept is faster or more ergonomic than a conventional keyboard or other one-handed input methods.
Is it a new Gboard app feature?
No. The rolling-belt keyboard is a physical device proposal, separate from the Gboard app. Google’s Japanese Google Play listing describes the phone and tablet keyboard app and includes a conventional one-handed mode that pins the on-screen keyboard to the left or right edge on large-screen phones. The listing showed an update date of September 29, 2026.

Can you buy or build it?
You cannot buy the featured device as a Google product: the announcement’s FAQ says there are no plans to sell it. Google points instead to open-source plans for building a similar device. Because those plans could not be verified here, construction details such as required parts, difficulty, and compatibility are not established.

The announcement also mentions possible future variations, including different colors, faster belt movement, more characters, and a shorter portable body. These are possibilities under consideration, not announced products or confirmed updates.
